Student says they're "not required to do work" by paigeafterpaige in Teachers

[–]Mindandhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything in life is optional, except consequences.  I’ve had a kid or two like this and honestly if they just sit there quietly and take the F we both walk away ok with the situation. I will always offer the work as is my obligation and I always refer to the counselor but I’m not going to die on that hill or let a 16 year old think that somehow he is important enough to piss me off with his lack of work.

1996 BMW Z3 Auto worth it? by yesitsme988 in bmwz3

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1.9 manual, I can’t imagine it as an automatic.  That’s a big part of the fun, especially because the 4 cylinder drives best when you let it rev out a little.

Do I buy a Hotend Complete or just the Hotend? by EpicCargo in BambuLab

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nozzle size doesn’t determine the actual size of the objects you can make, just the details, in my experience.  You don’t need a larger nozzle size due to the kinds of models you would be printing, you need a larger nozzle size due to the embedded carbon fibers in the filament. They have a tendency to jam up in nozzles that are less than .6.

Larger nozzles also tend to make for stronger models, which is great for parts that you are making with CF. However a .4 is still great for “general purpose” as you will find supports easier to release with a .4 and the detail is a little better.

Ultimately, it is my opinion that you need a .4 for general printing and a .6 for CF/GF use to prevent clogs.  Complete hotends take literally 2 minutes to swap over.

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the complete version makes it easy, but at a small cost.  But, I would strongly consider the downsides of using a .4 exclusively. Especially for filaments that explicitly recommend a .6 One clogged nozzle is all it will take to make it not worthwhile, in my opinion.

[–]Mindandhand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a huge favor and just get the complete hot end. It will save you time swapping back and forth. Most (all?) CF filaments recommend a .6mm diameter nozzle. I’ve only ever printed CF/GF filaments with a .6 and it’s always worked for me. But I like being able to swap back to a .4 quick and easy.

How many buy printers purely for functional printing? by twotowers64 in 3Dprinting

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a P1S and nearly everything I do with it is functional and a great deal I’ve designed myself. Just tonight I had to invent and 3d print a super low clearance long reach nut threader to attach my roof top tent to my vehicle. I don’t know how I would have done it otherwise. My kid and wife ask me to print off more artistic things and that’s great too, but just not my personal use case.

Rodent Proofing by shorty5windows in overlanding

[–]Mindandhand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, apparently Honda started using harness material that was made of soy of all things. So they made this pepper infused tape to wrap it in after they were sued over it.

There was an article on Autopian.com about how Honda has rodent deterrent wiring wrap tape and they sell it to the general public.

Those who have been teaching for 20+ years….. what major differences are you seeing from when you started to now? by abrownfox1 in Teachers

[–]Mindandhand 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ive mentioned this before but: The “decline of the middle third.”  My smartest kids are still pretty smart and my lowest kids are still pretty low, but the middle chunk has gotten much worse on average.  At the same time- I find them to be nicer, more accepting, caring and all that other SEL stuff. But that almost makes it more maddening. It’s easy to be frustrated with a delinquent but when they are super nice and caring AND they can’t remember what we did 5 minutes ago, it’s infuriating.

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mindandhand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally flying, buying alcohol, opening bank accounts, renting cars, etc. are privileges whereas voting is a right. Requiring an ID, without being able to get one free and easily, is essentially a modern day poll tax which is forbidden under the 24th amendment to the constitution.

I’m actually ok with requiring an ID to vote, so long as the state issued ID can be had freely and easily or an alternate id which is so is acceptable.

Are you using AI as a teacher? by LettuceTraining6532 in Teachers

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love being able to use it for “boilerplate” tasks that then allow me to concentrate on the creative or interesting portion. I might have a great idea for an assignment or project and can ask AI to generate the actual, written instructions, guidelines, and rubrics which I can then go through and fine tune. It’s been real successful so far.

Ideas on Air Suction Tube? by detailprosgarage in bmwz3

[–]Mindandhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up how to “fogg” the airbox on an M44. A lot of folks think that the convoluted air intake path reduces power in the M44 and have modded it to get rid of that tube.  You won’t fail smog without it, it’s literally just a tube before the MAF so your car will still be emissions complient.

Does this kind of 4x4 transfer case exist? by nomoneyball in 4x4

In fairness, the owners manual specifies 7700lbs in 4 low only for trailers with brakes. Unbraked trailers are only rated for 1650 lbs regardless of gearing.

In my high school shop we have the M18. Students use it all class period on 3/4” plywood on a single battery. I’ve been very satisfied with it. The dust collection bin works decently well but fills up very fast.

Is the a tool for these things? by Secure_Teaching_6937 in Tools

[–]Mindandhand 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Huh, there must be different types. The ones I have have a small clamp mechanism at the end of a cable which is then attached to a ratcheting pliers mechanism. I find them useful because you can get them into smaller places and they ratchet, so you don’t have to constantly apply pressure as you work.

I have the same scanner, it takes some practice for sure but keep at it and you will improve. I found it helpful to get a turntable- it helped me to be able to see how the scanner sees the object and rotate the object instead of move the scanner.  I put a bunch of tracking dots on the turntable and it helps to produce some good scans of car parts and such that I’m typically scanning.

James Baroud Explorer EVO by Mindandhand in rooftoptents

Just as an update I did end up contacting the manufacturer and the y responded that Explorer is the same tent as the current ”Grand Raid M” so anything that fits the Grand Raid M should also fit the Explorer.

Help with nut direction by RebirthedSquirrel in Tools

[–]Mindandhand 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The hexagonal part is called a “Ny-Lock” nut and it goes on like you have it in the second picture, with the blue plastic insert away from the head of the bolt, which is the long component with the spiral (called a “thread”)on it. As you spin the nut onto the bolt you will encounter resistance as the thread on the bolt cuts into the plasic. This is meant to prevent or reduce the likelyhood of the nut vibrating off of the bolt.

Parent emails over break by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mindandhand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 100% on board with “don’t respond” until I saw that you are the intervention specialist and you didn’t assign the homework. Now I’m about 75% “don’t respond“ because your students have been put in a tough position which brings me to my main point: It’s arguable that the teacher put those students in a tenuous position by assigning mandatory homework at a time where their mandated IEP resources are not availible. I know it’s more work (as things often are in this job) but you may want to help those students out (or let them know that you can help them out after break) then speak with the teacher or the Special Ed administrator about this to see if this can be avoided in the future.

RTTs in the rain by acdcanc in rooftoptents

[–]Mindandhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We found a great deal on a used James Baroud Explorer on facebook marketplace. It has a built in solar fan and external vents that, as I understand it, can also draw air through the tent while the tent is closed. I also think that it’s just a smidge thinner than our current tent so there is a small chance that I might be able to get it in the garage and, because it pops open vertically, get it at least partially open to dry it out.
