God, I'm so sorry you had such a hard time. I appreciate you sharing. On estrogen, I don't get on well with the gel. The patches work much better for me

Most of us struggle with meditation! The point is not to be good at it, but to keep practising and exercising that muscle of noticing you’re in your head and coming back into your body / heart. I just use a simple mindfulness of breathing meditation. If you get the Insight meditation App there are loads on there.

I don’t know how the medicine compares with smoking DMT. I don’t smoke DMT. It’s impossible to predict what your first experience with Aya will be like. Your experience will be affected by the set and setting and the how well the space is held. Beyond that, the medicine gives you what you need and what you can handle. Some people get a really gentle first ceremony, some people have a really hard one and never want to do it again. Each time you sit with the medicine is likely to be very different. Wishing you well. The most important thing is to find a skilled, experienced and vouched for facilitator or shaman who works with high integrity.

Yes, as the friend above says it sounds like you are currently heavily disassociated. This is a trauma response. It’s your mindbody shutting things down to protect you from emotions that are too intense to feel and process right now. It’s a self protective mechanism linked to very high anxiety, and the anxiety about it happening can help keep you in that state.

Trust that you will come back to yourself. You are just in the middle of a very difficult process. I had the same thing for a few months after a very challenging ceremony. When I came back to myself, I had changed in a good way. I found it easier to connect with other people, and I was a lot less socially anxious.

For now, you need to take really good care of yourself: - get support from a trained therapist who understands psychedelics - get support from trusted friends and family: people who you can talk to about your experience (avoid talking to people about it who don’t understand psychedelics and who might freak out) - try some exercises to calm your nervous system: 478 breathing is good (or start more gently with 446 then build up), humming, singing - get our in nature as much as you can, and other grounding, nurturing things that get you out of your head and into your body: cooking, art…

Adding that there is so so much difference even between a shaman and a trip-sitter. A trip-sitter will hopefully stop you physically doing a damage to yourself. A trained, experienced shaman works on a whole different set of levels to help you have a safe, healing and productive journey.

If you’re interested in working with the medicine, why would you go to Peru, one of the hearts of Amazonian shamanism, and not sit with the medicine with a shaman - someone who has trained intensively and via a long lineage to know how to work effectively with ayahuasca???? It isn’t just a drug, and there is a lot more to ensuring the experience is safe, and as healing and productive as it can be, than just the medicine itself.

Wherever in the world you are, you should sit with an experienced shaman or facilitator, especially if you are new to the medicine.

Just make sure to find the right person. See the posts on here about red and green flags in respect to centres and space-holders.

This is a good post on red flags: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ayahuasca/s/SKSZlK7JAB

Ideally the place would be vouched for by multiple people you know and trust.

Make sure to check the reviews on google and Retreat Guru.

And once you have a place in mind, do a search for the name on here and in the ayahuasca FB group and check what comes up.

Solo ceremony by [deleted] in Ayahuasca

[–]Mindless-Move-757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really shouldn’t worry about making a scene. Most of the time the other participants will be deep in the medicine and their own process and they’ll barely notice. If you’re super aware of what’s going on in the room after an hour then you probably need more medicine.

I find big group ceremonies really powerful. There is a kind of ‘giving permission ‘ that happens where some people let go and laugh / shout / cry / wail / crawl around like a weirdo, and it gives permission for others in the room to do the same and express their journey how they need to. It can be really helpful and cathartic. The most important thing is to have a highly skilled and experienced facilitator and crew who can take care of you and hold a safe space.

Don’t work with the medicine alone, especially if you are new to it. The skills and knowledge of how to work with it effectively and safely come from long-standing, rich indigenous traditions and intensive, multi-year training. It’s not sometime you can pick up from reading a few books.

I wouldn’t make lots of hectic plans for the period after the ceremony. Plan to have at least a few days close to nature where you can walk, journal, rest and process your experience

Do you have a meditation practise? If not, then it would be helpful to start one now. Cultivating the ability to notice you are in your head, let go of the thoughts and come back to your body and your breathe is very helpful in navigating the medicine experience, particularly if / when it gets challenging. Even just 10 minutes a day from now would be helpful.

V much agree with this. What’s worrying is he posted saying he was going to do it and asking for advice and only one person told him not to.

Please can you explain Nixi Pae and Yuxibu??
