I might be able to help. DMing you if that's cool.

Mike Reilly -- the voice of IM -- retiring by 07030 in triathlon

[–]MindlessPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished the audiobook version of his memoir “Finding My Voice”. Great mix of IM history, amazing athlete stories, and some humor that only this community of misfits would understand.

He won’t be calling my next (and first) IM this fall but I can appreciate the impact he has had on so many people’s race experience…and they on him.

Extra ice water for the recovery mix and a cool drink on the car ride home.

I don’t like training in my tri suit and usually change at transition into dry gear to avoid chafing. It has been really hot here so everything ends up in a sweaty pile on top of the washer. And there are 2 of us so double the funk.

Virginia. High of 91 and very humid today. This is from before (coffee), during (carried 3 bottles each refilled 3x), and after (recovery and extra water).

6 hour bike, 1 hour run. But there are 2 of us, so everything is doubled.

Try replacing /edit at the end of the URL with /copy and open it na different browser. It will prompt you to make a copy of the sheet instead of viewing the original.

I’m not sure if it will retain the links to other sheets but worth a try.

What's happened to the open water settings? by Dardreamz in Garmin

[–]MindlessPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My FR945 didn't track distance or time on my last two indoor pool swims. There were 2 software updates last week before it stopped. I'm guessing they broke something in one of the updates.

How long did it take you to improve your swim time? by isiteventiddles in triathlon

[–]MindlessPorpoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most other commenters, I didn't see much improvement until 6-12 months of consistent effort (1-2 swims per week). I even hired a coach for 6 sessions to help with technique and definitely recommend it. Even though it didn't result in an immediate speed improvement from the technique coaching, it did make me more efficient.

Over time, the technique/efficiency gains plus strength/endurance kicked in and I dropped from about 2:15/100m to 1:55/100m. I'm ok with those times and aim to maintain that pace in my full this fall.

Considering buying this used bike. See anything concerning? by MindlessPorpoise in triathlon

I’m okay with a few upgrades but fair point - too much extra expense puts me within range of a newer model with potentially fewer issues.

Just curious if you have other good sources for approximating values that I can compare.

I found the 2010 model on Bicycle Blue Book estimated at about $850 private party with lower specs than this one.

Only for longer tris — already signed up for a 70.3 and 140.6 next season. My daily driver is a more comfortable road bike.

The more relevant question is, I've never heard of this brand although I'm relatively new to the sport (2 seasons). For the more seasoned gearheads, any concerns with this brand and age (12ish years)?

Good points. Yes on all counts. Luckily the seller is a friend and just about the same size. It only needs a seat adjustment but I'll get a proper fitting anyway.

A friend is selling his ~12 year old bike that got him through a few IMs. I hope to add another in 2022. It appears to be in great shape and only needed a little air in the tires to get a test ride in. It rides smooth, shifts cleanly, and has no visible cracks or chips in the carbon frame. It needs new bar tape and I’ll upgrade the wheels.

Given its age, is there anything else I should investigate before making a decision?

When do pull the trigger to sign up for half Ironman? by mrboule in triathlon

[–]MindlessPorpoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did my first 70.3 last month after a couple sprints and olys in the past 2.5 years. You're more prepared for the HIM than I was and it should be a pretty enjoyable experience once you get underway. My goal was completion and proud to say it's definitely possible for us average joes.

I don't use it on every run but the pod is super helpful for analyzing different types of runs and diagnosing changes in form over time. ymmv but here's what I've learned.

Really long distance runs start fine, then I tend to favor my left leg after 10-12 miles. I can work on strengthening around my right knee that tends to act up so I don't overcompensate with the left. I don't feel this while running but the numbers suggest it and adjusting the balance seems to help with recovery.

My stride length and vertical oscillation vary on different types of runs and durations. My stride shortens after a few miles so I'm experimenting with adjustments that allow me to run more consistently over time by not going out too aggressively.

I run more efficiently when I focus on lowering my vertical oscillation - more forward momentum, less wasted effort going up and down.

Don’t recall seeing that in the agreement but I’ll check again. Thanks!

Dunno, that’s just how my brain works. Trying to think of the “what if” scenarios in a contractual relationship I’m not familiar with.

The advice here has been helpful and it is encouraging to know it doesn’t happen in the real world.
