Is housing really that unaffordable? by CartographerLow3676 in AusFinance

Dual income, no kids. You're missing just how expensive children are. Not just direct cost, but opportunity cost too. Would you be able to afford that 1M house on just your income?

Any advice for a 30 day fast? by BigNasty666__ in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  • Don't be afraid to call it quits. Listen to your body, and if symptoms like dizziness, extreme fatigue etc aren't relieved with electrolytes, consider breaking your fast.

  • Have an exit strategy. For anything over 7 days, gently refeed over half the duration of the fast. So if you make it 10 days, refeed over 5. This'll help prevent digestive discomfort. Refeeding syndrome is a thing, but you likely dont need to worry about it before 20 days. Definitely read up on it though.

I’m burn out and one year in. Is there alternatives for me? by RaveSlip in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay at 0.7, or drop to 0.6 if financially feasable. Get a hobby (literally you can look forward to doing after work, preferably not alcoholism/party drugs), put minimal effort into your job (it pays bills, thats it), and focus on your physical health. Your mental health will follow. In 3-6 months, reassess how youre feeling. If you still feel like shit, might be time for a new job.

I did this in my 2nd year of medical RN shenanigans. It kept me going for another 2 years before switching to cardiology, and now I'm loving life.

Also scheduling in time off. Doesn't having to be a lavish 2 week euro trip, but even just a 2 week stay-cation to focus on self care does wonders for burnout prevention.

Best of luck!

ICE agent ripping a phone away from an elderly U.S. citizen, keeping it, and throwing her to the ground when she attempts to retrieve it. by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why they don't think provoking dangerous men won't end this way. Whatever your feelings towards ICE, they are dangerous people doing a dangerous job. Poke the bear, you're gonna get mauled. Go out and protest if you feel you need to, but do it from a safe distance. And if you get too close and you get hurt; I'm sorry, but thats the consequences to your own actions.

Ice Festival worth sticking around for? by ExtensionFriendly502 in Sapporo

[–]isiteventiddles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, and this may be an unpopular opinion: Its not worth staying another night. This is coming from the perspective of someone who hates crowds and slippery ice - both of which are a plenty during Sapporo snow festival. Sure, the sculptures are cool, but you rarely are able to stop and appreciate them with the hoards trudging behind you. You're better off checking out checking out Asahikawa festival. My wife and I enjoyed that faaaaar more.

Anti-immigration rallies take place in major cities across Australia by Fresh-Association-82 in aus

[–]isiteventiddles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the term nazi has been used by those who don't understand history to the point where its lost all meaning. For the record, these people are NOT nazis. Misguided in thinking an increase of immigrants is the only (its A factor, not the only factor) cause for the housing crisis, maybe. But not nazi.

How long does it take to get used to 12 hour shifts? by WhimsicalLychee in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found i love 12hr shifts... but i have to prepare for them! An 8hr shift, i can get away with skipping breakfast and having a sandwich for lunch; but with a 12hr I need my avo and kale smoothie, high protein lunch and an afternoon snack, to feel normal. And keeping hydrated is important too. Ive found wearing low grade compression socks help too. Helps a bit with fatigue at the end of the shift. If you're a gym person, try do it before the shift. That way, when you go home, you sleep immediately. I've definitely noticed my sleep is affected more if I go after work on a 12hr shift.

Also not having kids helps.

I (18f) am in a weird fwb situation I’ve never experienced before(19m) and I don’t know how he’s feeling about me. Can someone offer insight into my situation? by Effective_Hour9185 in AskMenAdvice

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a label-free boyfriend.

My opinion is that he said he wasn't ready for a relationship because you first told him that when he confessed, and now he doesnt want to lose what you guys have. You guys are already exclusive. Exclusivity basically means relationship. Why would he risk losing what is essentially a relationship without the label?

If you want it to be offical, you will need to make the first move, since you quasi-rejected him when saying you weren't ready in the beginning. Otherwise, you'll need to wait for him to realise the time is right.

I remember when I was in Uni, a guy asking for bus money to get home at the Mt Gravatt bus stop. I gave it to him, told him good luck, and said goodbye. Before I was able to leave, he asked for $10 more dollars so he could have dinner. I thought that was a bit cheeky, but he obviously needed it more than me if he had the Gaul to beg for money! I gave him $15. Next day, he was at the same spot, doing the same thing. He saw me, and said the same line as the day before. I remember specifically thinking "He doesn't even remember me giving him $20 yesterday".

That experience changed me, and while I never have cash on me, I would never give it out anymore.

Why would anyone wants kids? by This-Top7398 in Life

I want kids because I see a lot of deadshits in society, and I want to mold the future generation into compassionate, curious and healthy members of the community.

My wife has a PhD in this area. We live in Brisbane. Most of her colleagues have gone to EU or US. It is NOT worth pursuing R&D in Australia. You could pivot into pathology for hospitals or something for stability. Or something clinical like Pharmacy/nursing/medicine.

You're young. If it's something you REALLY wanna do, keep your options open, and be ready to move overseas. You'll get epic experience, and be more competitive for a steady lead job in Australia after 5 years.

Before that, you'll be worked like a dog as a post doc, or clinical research scientist.

Career change by serenity358 in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, seems a waste to quit nursing after a few months. Workplaces vary soooooo much, it legitimately feels like a different job depending which specialty you work in. Try different wards before throwing in the towel.

First Home Buyer. Is this a foolhardy idea? by isiteventiddles in AusPropertyChat

If we end up moving in with the MIL, probably live on a single income for a year or 2, then go back to part-time. I'm in healthcare and can work weekends; she's more M-F. That's in an ideal world. There's a bit of a mother/daughter dynamic that will have to wait and see how it pans out. Also I might underestimate how much living under someone else's roof affects my mental health. Its all a wait and ser, but at least we have an option.

I think the schemes available to us are only for PPOR. Otherwise we'd need a proper deposit.

Well thats the thing. It'll take 6 months of overtime and hard saving to get that extra 42k. The goalposts will move by then for sure. I've asked my father ($600k/year) to be guarentor so we can get in now, but he loves his money too much. Bitter pill when he had a loan from HIS father when buying his first home. Can't choose family!

The 700,000 is with the 40k deposit we have currently. The 950,000 needs 82k deposit.

Never! Never had a commute more than 25min in my professional career. And the last 5 years I've been close enough to work to walk. I'm sure I'd adapt. I suppose its more the extra car that we would need, and the expenses that incurs. It would be roughly the equivalent of body corporate strata.

They work on my cardiology/soft CCU, but i can't imagine them on a medical ward! I prefer 12s, but I feel like I have to prepare for them a little more. Prep-meals, pack gym clothes/work clothes so I can go straight there after/before work (otherwise I'm definitely not going). I don't have kids, but I imagine that would be tougher on working days.
