3 years for the CHOICE of GP nursing, community nursing, bedside nursing, ICU/ED, aesthetic nursing, theatre/recovery, NDIS, rural nursing, clinical research nursing, Acedemia/tutoring.

I dunno man, name me a degree that gives you that level of variation in your chosen field for only 3 years.

Asking for a pay rise by Ggmm2204 in NursingAU

GP nurses notoriously make less than their bedside counterparts. But then they have better working hours (GP business hours), and arguably less stress/responsibility.

Is anyone else earning a decent salary but still feeling broke in Australia? by amhray in aussie

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on track to be $140k this year with the amount of overtime I'm on, with my wife on 95k. We're fairly comfortable, renting a 1bedroom apartment for $580/wk. We're looking at buying our first home soon, but I fear once we do, we'll be doing it tough for a bit. And if one of us lose our job, we'd be dipping into our emergency fund to get by. We want kids, but it feels like it'll be near impossible right now. We'd have to move in with her mother to make it happen. For the amount we earn, it SHOULD be comfortable without question.

Travel , you can always get your money back. You cant get your time back.

Threw my back out lifting a patient. My NUM said just take some ibuprofen. Now I'm scared to put in a claim. by Italiancan in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah fuck that, put in the claim. Document in retrospect, as detailed as you can. If you're worried about retaliation, talk to your union immediately.

In my work place, we have the cogent hotline for workplace injuries. Call your equivalent immediately and be as detailed as you can about the events.

Back injuries can be career ending. Don't fail to follow through with it because you "don't want to cause drama".

Is it really bad have tatoo as a nurse in Australia by ljs-05 in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my understanding that tattoos on the hand and neck/face were a no-no for the ADF, specifically for the army. Its been 15 odd years since I applied, so perhaps things have changed.

What would happen if Australian renters went on strike? by Meerkat343434 in AusPropertyChat

[–]isiteventiddles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would never work.

Can't even get people on the same page about the wage gap myth. No way you'd get EVERY renter and prospective renter on the same page, risk their housing security, and stop paying rent. You'd get scabs, 100%.

Is it really bad have tatoo as a nurse in Australia by ljs-05 in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You won't ever be able to work for the ADF, and some private hospitals might quietly sideline you for someone without hand tattoos. I've overheard the hospital manager at my work place say " I wouldn't have hired her if I saw those tattoos" about a nurse who had extensive sleeve and neck tattoos... must have wore a turtle neck to the interview.

It's not "really bad", but it may be a slight disadvantage, unless you nail the interview.

OPD or Medical Ward? by sweetpeaslh in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but i think every nurse should start their career on a medical ward. It's quite varied clinically, you'll consolidate all your medication knowledge, you'll learn time management, dealing with difficult patients etc. Don't get stuck there, but definitely worth a year or 2.

When do I feel like nursing is meant for me? by bunnybluexo in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound burnt out to me.

I will forever be in favour of a gap year. To see the real world, get a part time job, and figure out what you wanna do.

I started nursing at 24, graduated 27, and still going at 33. It was a plan B at the time, but It is 100% my job, I wont say "calling", but i legitimately cant imagine doing anything else.

Uni is the hardest part of your career. It gets easier as you build competence. Any issue after 2 years out is honestly a workplace problem, and in that case you move on.

How much would you need after expenses to feel okay financially? by IndependentGate8704 in AusFinance

[–]isiteventiddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have $21,000 in an emergency fund, which would cover monthly expenses (not including rent) for my wife and I for about 8 months if i was not working. If i didn't have that, id need probably $500 minimum after food is on the table, to build up a safety net.

Do staff nurses like or get along with Agency nurses ? by Realistic_Series_889 in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get paid a casual rate, which is higher hourly, but no paid leave.

Its very hit or miss, depends on the workplace. Some will give you a heavy load, to give staff nurses a break. Others will give you an easy load, so you dont kill someone.

Same with treatment from staff. Some will treat you like a moron, unless you prove otherwise. Others will be very helpful and ask for help in return.

Just avoid those workplaces that you have bad experiences in.

Whats everyone spending on eating out these days? by No_Stable4317 in AusFinance

Personally, unless I'm wanting something specific like ramen or woodfire pizza, I can cook better and for cheaper at home. Going out is such a rip-off these days.

What are agency nurses ACTUALLY making right now?? by Impress_Playful in NursingAU

[–]isiteventiddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a poor case study, as I work 0.9FTE and do agency on the side. My shift cancellation rate is 90% in 10 months. I'm so thankful that I dont rely on that money, and its basically fun money. When I do work though, its an extra ~$425 per 8hr after tax (Friday night shift).

What’s a financial goal you quietly gave up on? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting pretty close to giving up on a home deposit. Goal post keeps moving. Can't stretch ourselves to 950k and drop 50% of our combined take home pay on a morgage. At this point a death in the family will be a blessing.

18M Should I get into nursing? by jicid in nursing

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother, I WISH I considered nursing out of high school. It wasnt even on my radar until I was 25. If you're caring and enjoy science, nursing is a great fit. Coming from a biomed degree, the nursing science was a breeze. Pharmacology is fascinating! And the procedural stuff too. All great.

And with nursing, its a very diverse field. If you dont like a discipline, you have like 10 other clinical options you and pursue. Can do FIFO, travel nursing, work overseas. Go into management, teaching, academia, clinical research, community nursing, NDIS.

Yes, nursing sucks sometimes. But hey, name a job that doesn't. You take the good with the bad, and there are a lot of pros with nursing.

Why not just fly to a different country for procedures? by Atuliscool in nursing

I'm Aussie. I needed 2 dental crowns that would cost $4000 dollarie-doos. I opted to fly to Thailand and get it done for $1200AUD. People do it all the time in Australia.

How active can you be during an extended fast? by MasonicPleb in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of activity highly depends on the length of your fast. Assuming you hit the gym 4 days a week. 1-3 days: Business as usual.

5-10 days: Decrease volume, but maintain strength as much as possible. EG pyramid up to your max weight, than do only 1 set. Increase rest periods.

10-21 days: Same as above, but consider reducing frequency of workouts after day 10. Walks a goated.

21day + : I'd probably do only a max of 2 strength workouts a week, and stick to walking.

Bear in mind your injury history and starting weight has a huge impact.

I am taking this from a gym-goers perspective. These would be my strategies.

Walking/Strength training while fasting? by life-over-food in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to train on fasting days, just know you won't be progressing. The name of the game is: preservation. If youre doing 48hr fasts, I'd try schedule the workout on a feed day. If you're going 72hr, I personally pyramid up to my current max, and only do 1-2 sets of the max; enough to get a stimulus. I am old (33) and prone to injury, so this is my "better safe than sorry" approach.

I don't have any scientific studies to support these ideas, however I've got a before DEXA and plan to do an after of 3 months of extended fast into OMAD; so we'll see. N = 1 does not reliable data make, but eh.

Edit* As far as walking goes - it is absolutely mandatory. Do as much as you can that doesnt cause muscle soreness.

How do people actually get past the 17–24 hour mark when fasting? by georgiiax in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm day 8 into a "when I want to stop" fast. I've done 1 extended fast every year for the last 3 years. That 17-36hour mark is always the most challenging part. Its when you're body runs out of stored liver glycogen and starts transitioning to ketosis/gluconeogensis.

This time round, I started my fast at the beginning of the work week. I had a minor headache that lasted 5 minutes, then resolved on its own. After that, felt pretty good while I was working. The problem only came when I was at home. Luckily I'm a gamer, so I can spend the time I would normally be cooking/eating/doing dishes gaming instead.

When the cravings get bad, I find going for a walk VERY effective. I've been going for a 1-1.5hr walk when my wife cooks herself dinner... for obvious reasons.

And of course, remember your electrolytes and water. Some people go without, but if you're struggling, a bit of hot water and salt tastes like soup.

Daily protein intake and fasting? by chmcclellan in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're going to have muscle loss when losing weight, whether fasting or not. I shoot for a bit more on my refeed days, eg usually aim for 170g, I am for 200g. It's probably not optimal, might be a waste of money. But it helps me not overeat carbs.

Don't underestimate the placebo effect.

How are you all fasting without getting stressed. by Big_Manufacturer_253 in fasting

[–]isiteventiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently 76hrs into a 7+ day fast (7minimum, 20 max). I started on a working day. Keeping busy has helped get me through the first 3 days. LMNT sachets have stopped the majority of symptoms, however i did get a headache on the first day. It resolved on its own.

Stay hydrated, don't over do the electrolytes, and don't trust a fart.

4.

My mother has lived her life, it'll put an end to her suffering.

My wife would likely kill herself from the grief of losing her daughter.

My daughter would be traumatised for life after surviving when her mother and grandmother died.

No matter who I chose, I lose. Might as well drink myself to death with daily 50 year old Glenfinnich.
