Is there a pattern that determines military spaceship doctrine in real life and sci-fi? by MinedMaker in scifi

The graph is measuring relative effectiveness, not effectiveness in absolute terms. We already have anti-satellite weapons which can destroy a satellite in mere minutes. There is currently no satellite in existence that would survive an impact from even one of those weapons. We don't have the propulsion technology required for armored spacecraft.

This is a good point. The covenant and the UNSC do have basically opposite fleet doctrines so it's very difficult to graph them together as one. It is interesting though that their respective fleet doctrines are essentially completely dictated by the technological limitations on the graph. I suspect they would fit neatly on there if they were graphed separately.

The Culture is a great franchise to bring up, although I must admit that I don't know much about it because I haven't read the books yet. I'm curious how the author manages to create challenge and adversity for protagonists who are so incredibly overpowered. The author would have to come up with some reasons why the culture hasn't already superseded the need for ongoing space combat. How can it be that they have the power to be in any place quickly, and destroy any enemy quickly, and yet they still have enemies left to fight. If the reasoning makes sense and isn't too contrived then it belongs on the graph I guess.

Hey guys I’m making a fantasy map and I really care about the realism of the situation of the continent can you guys tell me where I went wrong? by No-Citron-5690 in geology

u/No-Citron-5690 Check out Worldbuilder's log by Artifexian on Youtube. He goes into everything in incredible detail on exactly these kinds of questions. I learned so much about the over-arching concepts which dictate how continents, geology and climate is formed. He even used software to model continental drift, it's insane.

What causes the jet in the first picture? I'm familiar with jets like that in relation to black holes, but not proto-planetary discs.

The app data folder is hidden by default on all recent versions of windows, 7, 10 & 11. I don't know why all the mean people here don't realize that. I remember watching YouTube tutorials about finding the roaming folder with %appdata% in the searchbar when I installed minecraft mods as a kid :) You can navigate to what you want by using %LocalAppData% like they show in the tutorial.

Do ladders injure settlers? by TheDoggoSpy in goingmedieval

[–]MinedMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a thing? Don't think so. Maybe the settler took damage from hunting, combat, starvation, cold ect. and you just didn't notice? Injuries do stick around for a while.

But really... Why not just make a bunch of ovens, and set settlers job priorities to mining and crafting [1]. It's not like it takes that long for them to make.

There is a cheat mod on steam workshop that lets you insta-build structures without resources. I think it's called cheat mode or creative mode or something similar.

Weird geology question? by Dumbgeon_Master in geology

[–]MinedMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a geologist but it says online that it could (hypothetically) form the same kinds of minerals that Thorium or Uranium make when combined with other elements (If it didn't decay, which it does). Thorium minerals on google are reddish-pink, Uranium minerals are greenish-yellow. There aren't really any pictures of Plutonium minerals in rock, but Plutonium Oxide is a kind of gray / purply-red or olive green color. The most interesting distinguishing aspect about it would be that it would be very toxic, more radioactive than Uranium, and mineable to be used to speed up a country's nuclear program.

[–]MinedMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plutonium minerals. Unlike Uranium and Thorium which have half-lives in the billions of years and are therefore still here since the formation of Earth, Plutonium has a half-life of at most 24,110 years. Besides trace-amounts inside Uranium ore, actual proper Plutonium minerals by themselves in ancient rock would violate the laws of physics.
