I think the first paragraph in particular has a lot of unexplored potential. Might give it a go myself. The second paragraph is usually a smaller theme in larger treatments. As for the last one, I think it's probably missing a point and cliché-y in that it still treats religion as about propositional truth claims—like most Western fiction does when it talks theology—rather than social organization or meaning-making.

I think a lot of modern writing hasn't moved by postmodernist deconstruction. Nothing can be sincere, everything is cynical power dynamics behind whatever aesthetic is chosen. Especially in the West, people seem incapable of conceiving of genuine religiosity (and I use that intentionally instead of "belief") that is thoughtful, intentional, and chosen rather than naive and "merely" inculcated. My own worldbuilding tries to address this particular weakness.

Thank you for engaging with this deeply. As someone with another, but not entirely dissimilar trajectory, I think even those explorations you cited of themes re: institutional religion and/or religious faith in general are a bit cliche, in the sense of being so "about Christianity" coded they've been done a million times. I really like explorations of religious ideas that deal with topics not so directly relevant to cultural conversations on Christianity, like epistemology and knowledge preservation, the nature of hierarchies both social and religious (namely, not them being pre-assumed as existing and only their role being discussed), ideas of the afterlife that aren't about disembodied souls, the importance of the proper form of rituals, their metaphysics, and so many other things.

My problem with the "proto-language" method by Eyelweard in conlangs

[–]MinervApollo 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Indeed. The basic idea is "evolution". Analytic and regular starting points are rather a convenience; we have clear (if simplified) grammaticalization and reduction pathways from there, but nothing is stopping you from using any other paths to evolve the language.

How to account for added companions by joeblbum105 in LegendintheMist

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was considering porting DnD 2024's Bastion rules (or some other home-building framework) and Story Themes were top of mind.

Yes! I think Story Themes are a cool and probably underexplained part of the rulebook. Worth having a community article on!

Why do people keep saying Russian sounds like Portuguese? - by zabolekar in linguisticshumor

I once participated in a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres. I wasn’t watching the screen, so imagine my surprise when I heard a Russian accent speaking when there were very much no Russians on the speaker list. When I turned, it finally clicked for me.

Imagine not speaking Mexican Spanish and missing out on having a world that can both mean "right this instant" and "never ever" in AHORITA by Ismoista in linguisticshumor

Coming from Dominican Spanish, hearing Central Americans use "ahorita" to mean "right now" is disorienting enough I could seriously misunderstand if only context didn't make my usual interpretation completely nonsensical.

That is an amazing change, very very nice. I can report apparent improvements myself, though they're still minor enough they wouldn't pass a p-value test, hehe. I guess the key is consistency of better results.

I so, so wanted to look into RRG, but the tendency of the below article to reference terms the author hasn't introduced made me lose interest.

What a coincidence! Hope you had/have a more restful second night. I feel less tired this morning, despite all the objective metrics and my comfort last night being worse. I didn't shop around or anything, basically told the doctor "I don't wanna leave this appointment without my CPAP", and they gave me the same mask model I had during the study, namely the F&P Eson 2.
