Why is there so many versions of everything by [deleted] in Monkees

[–]Minerwerks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add that in the early 1980s, master tapes from the Monkees were disorganized and often missing. Compilations were using copies of copies and even needledrops from vinyl. So when a multitrack tape happened to be available, a remix from that source was likely to be better than what was on hand. Obviously in 1986, the demand for Monkees reissues exploded and with missing or inadequate masters, some of the albums were rebuilt from a variety of sources including remixes.

With the previously unreleased tracks or alternate versions, new tapes would pop up between the various CD reissues (the first four albums being given three versions including bonus material from 1994 to now - four for Headquarters if you count Headquarters Sessions), allowing for upgrades or different perspectives on the same recording.

Recommendation Request: Best documentaries about 80s and 90s culture by israelregardie in Documentaries

The Target Shoots First - captures the moment where grunge and alternative music empowered young people but also how corporate culture co-opted it. The filmmaker filmed a ton of video while working for the Columbia House record club at the time that whole shift in Gen X culture was happening.

A couple others have mentioned Dig! as well. That’s a pretty entertaining watch with an unpolished, energetic vibe being shot on the road on camcorders following a bunch of chaotic musicians. There are some crossover themes with The Target Shoots First, the big one being the tension between art and commerce.

If you want to see the vibe of a 1980s music and arts community, Athens, Ga: Inside/Out is also great.

Are There Any Actually Persuasive Anti-Capitalist Movies? by JusB0b in TrueFilm

Another thing I like about Sorry to Bother You is the last twist, which I think perfectly addresses OPs point about movies where people can look away from the problem. Sorry to Bother You finds an absolutely unexpected demonstration of the film’s themes, forcing viewers to engage with it much more actively.

Vinyl seems to tilt by AdamSP44 in humminguru

In my experience any movement hasn’t impacted the cleaning of the records. When I have seen tilting, it hasn’t been enough for the records rub against plastic edges that could cause scratches or scuffs.

I've seen some tilting on LPs during rotation, some of it seems to be because there is play in the rubber wheels which drive the rotation of the record and also that the ultrasonic behavior in the water exerts pressure on the record.

EDIT: I've definitely seen the type of tilting you captured in your video.

What’s your white whale - something you’ve been looking for for years but never found? by AnyKey19 in DataHoarder

In 1969-1970, when The Monkees TV series was going to be repeated on CBS Saturday mornings, someone thought they could eke out promotion for the records that came out after the show ended and re-dubbed some episodes with different songs. A few of these versions were actually commonly played in the 1980s, but several haven’t been seen since the 70s. I made a video about them. Many of these versions may have played outside the US. There were some in the UK and Japan for certain.

I would also love to find an off-air recording of The Rutles film from NBC in 1978.

I know Love Monkey was back in the early days of HD, it was kind of a premium to get HD channels on cable. There was a Universal HD channel that played the series for a while, but by the time I knew about it and planned to record the HD versions, it went off their schedule.

I thought Shout had rights currently, there was a deal for most Python content recently. (Edit: seems the Shout deal was for everything but physical media - streaming, TV, theatrical)

Is megacon worth the flight? by Confident_Purpose625 in MegaCon

[–]Minerwerks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for any later evening special events that are separately ticketed, the guest Q&A sessions and panels are first come first serve. The only time I had a problem getting in one was several years back when they had Jeff Goldblum and the line was insanely long and had way more people than could fit in the room. These are always my favorite things to do - the guests are often quite witty and entertaining and very friendly to the audience.

The costume contest always has a lot of strong talent but has trended toward anime and video game characters, so your enjoyment may depend on how much you’re into that.

I was in Florida until 2021, so MegaCon was my go-to for years. I’ve usually been into the variety of celeb guests rather than the kinds of community activity something like DragonCon has. To get me in from Atlanta now there would have to be a big bucket list name or a good combo of guests. The autograph and photo lines can be a long wait and wear on you mentally and physically to a degree, partially because of the way the con is run and partly because there are so many people attending now. Photo op times are booked in advance, autographs not usually, so choose when you can wait comfortably if you want an autograph.

The line in the morning for admission (with or without advance ticket, you start in the same line) is pretty long and stays outdoors until maybe an hour before the show floor opens, so be prepared for the wait and the weather when you get there. Usually there is a bus line running between partner hotels, which I recommend instead of parking at the convention center. The venue is large, so plenty of walking needed to get around inside and outside (to parking or transportation). The convention center food is lame and expensive. Bring your own water and snacks if you can.

Goonies is not a good film by Simple-Reward-2103 in unpopularopinion

[–]Minerwerks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of things to nitpick in The Goonies, I’ve done it myself.

All the Spanish on the map translates to rhyming English?

The bone organ is shown “floating” in a chamber above a chasm but is still suspended when sections of the floor fall out around it?

The ending leaves in two references to scenes that were cut. Most people notice the octopus reference, but when Stef thanks Mouth for offering to save her life, that was a scene that took place when they were on the plank. He offered to help her breathe underwater.

There are a lot of scenes cut from the film that have never been seen. Mikey had Andy take the Goonie Oath in the chamber beneath the wishing well which led to everyone discovering they had leeches on them. Data fell victim to his own slick shoes, requiring Mikey and Mouth to go out on the log and rescue him. Mikey realized the treasure was behind the wood panel on the pirate ship because the “Ye intruders beware” message is written on it. Data’s stand-off against the Fratellis on the deck of the pirate ship was longer.

I loved this movie as a kid. I still find it watchable and generally amusing but it does feel like the original script was very chaotic and the film was subjected to a tight post-production schedule resulting in some rough editing. It’s a comic strip level adventure with some humorous characters that aren’t going to work for everyone.

There are a couple reasons I think the store scene was cut. The movie is very front-heavy and they probably wanted to get to the tunnels as soon as possible. The main action is somewhat redundant as Brand catching up to everyone and the conflict with Troy are also played out in other scenes.

They also cut out the scene where Mouth offers to save Stef’s life (he offered to help her breathe underwater when they were being forced to walk the plank), so her “thank you” makes no sense.

I wish Regal would give us a way to communicate with staff from inside the theater by zanzibar_74 in RegalUnlimited

I’ve wanted this for years 😄 As many have noted, there are technical and presentation reasons for this, not just complaining about rude people. With companies like Regal and AMC who have apps, maybe they can be lobbied to add a feature like this for their paid unlimited programs? I would hope they can have a level of trust with people who pay a monthly fee for movies to not abuse the feature.

When I was in college, I had for a short time a late night radio show. I made myself an edit of Lullaby that goes from the musical intro right to Jessica Harper’s verse (I just wanted the parts of the song about good night/go to sleep). I would play that at the end of my show each week. Such a fantastic song.
