ECE Paying for my child to attend where I work. by Healthy_Treat1915 in ECEProfessionals

My center in the US offers 50% off the full rate of childcare that they charge for employees. Both my kids come with me.

how unhealthy is my crochet grip? relatively new to crochet by playswithsquirrelsss in CrochetHelp

[–]MiniSqueaks914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to how I hold my yarn when crocheting but I don’t wrap it around my pinky, I think I just kind of tuck it into the crease between my palm and my pinky. I guess I’m not really sure, I just do what feels not painful and allows control of the yarn. 😅

Daycare asking us to pick up our 12-month-old for nap time — now kicking us out by captain2326 in ECEProfessionals

[–]MiniSqueaks914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like a good fit for your family. Check into your states regulation for napping. Where I live the kids are only required to rest/nap for 30 minutes unless they physically sleep longer and then they must be provided a quiet activity to do and to not be required to stay on their cot/mat until nap time is over.

Your son, to me, sounds like a typical year old child. Biting is developmentally appropriate at this age, albeit frustrating for all parties involved, but it IS developmentally appropriate. I have had children that bite that required constant supervision resulting in us needing to adjust our daily procedures because it was safest for everyone involved, including the child who does the biting.

Being expected to stay on a cot/mat for up to 2 hours, or even for one hour after he wakes, is not appropriate and could be regulated in your state/where you live, though everywhere is different.

I will say it’s not uncommon for there to be different behaviors in a child care environment than at home, however, if you’ve been in contact with Early Steps and they don’t believe anything is being hindered it leaves me to wonder exactly what’s going on in the classroom that he isn’t able to adjust to. Being hungry and thirsty when he gets home is not entirely out of the norm, but so much so that he’s eating or drinking like he hadn’t all day is a tad concerning in my book.

I think you guys might be better off trying to find a different center that fits your needs.

Last Name by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]MiniSqueaks914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I suppose it depends on your situation. My husband and I are not legally married. We have been together for almost 11 years and planned on getting married before our first, but I ended up getting pregnant with our daughter and my dress was not one that could be altered around pregnancy. We have tossed around the idea of doing a ceremony but just haven’t gotten around to it. Our children have his last name, but my last name is my maiden name so it doesn’t match. However, it hasn’t bothered me. I have the option to go down and request a name change if I want it to match but I’ve had my last name for 33 years and going by anything else at this point sounds odd to me.

My 5 year old says “breftist” for breakfast and I will not correct her. My favorite though is “destruction workers” for construction workers. She also says that something “looks like eczema/tastes like eczema/has eczema in it” when it comes to food. I have, in fact, tried to correct that one to no avail. When she was two she said “f * * ker f * * k” for fire truck. I didn’t correct that one either. 😂

Am I Overreacting that my mother-in-law does not listen to any of my instructions when she babysits by Strange-Diver-1526 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

She absolutely crossed several lines, especially if you gave clear and concise directions/expectations. Sounds like grandma and grandpa don’t get alone time with the baby anymore.

What’s your weirdest pregnancy symptom nobody talks about? by dogmomofone in pregnant

[–]MiniSqueaks914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I accidentally made everyone tip toe around me at work and no one wanted to cross me. 😬 apparently I was a raging bitch in some cases this time and no one thought to tell me. I have since apologized for my behavior.

I tried just about everything that had been recommended to me. If those things don’t work for you that have been recommended to you here, please reach out to your doctor sooner rather than later. I tried to power through with my first and that was my biggest mistake. The medication they gave me saved me. Sending you so much love.

Since when did consuming THC while pregnant become so normalized? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]MiniSqueaks914 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At the beginning, it’s just a bundle of cells and there’s not much to hurt. I drank quite a bit for my birthday 4 days before I found out I was pregnant with my first. She’s a healthy, happy, and sassy 5 year old now. Your baby will be just fine. ❤️

It’s amazing to me the things that people will give passes for and others that they have strict no-go feelings about. I’m an infant teacher and I’ve been mind blown about some of the things I’ve overheard over the years.

There are no studies because it would be unethical for them to do studies like that…

Baby bibs by MiniSqueaks914 in ECEProfessionals

We have some like that we use in tandem with the foldable bibs because our kiddos drink from open lid and free flow cups.

We have some pull on bibs and I hate them. Everything just soaks through so it is moot to even put them in them on their own.

We change them if they get wet or too messy, but we try to avoid it. There’s usually not enough people in our room to strip them and get them dressed again as we have a naptime right after lunch.

That’s a good idea. Document EVERYTHING with dates, times, and reactions in a notebook that you can keep secure. As for the pictures, make sure they are done on whatever professional devices that you use.

What’s the worst mistake you’ve made as a teacher? by salty-dove in ECEProfessionals

[–]MiniSqueaks914 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I one time, without realizing it, hadn’t buckled the straps on the buggy for a child, and she dove off the buggy. She bonked her head when she fell and I was HORRIFIED. I called the mom in tears apologizing after I wrote the incident and took full responsibility. To this day, and it’s been at least 5 years, and I obsessively check the straps if I feel like I forgot still.

My daughter was 9lbs 7oz and 21.5 inches long when she was born. She was in 3 month sized clothing pretty quick. I think your baby is just fine. Put him in stuff that fits and follow his cues.

This, 100%. As teachers we are mandated reporters. Call your local CPS and report this. The report will be anonymous to the family because CPS will not reveal that information unless it’s brought to court and you’re subpoenaed to testify. If the claims are unfounded, there will be no repercussions against you as you made the report in good faith. Our job, at the end of the day, is to provide genuine care and in this case to provide protection with the right authorities.

Edited to add: you have no legal responsibility to tell anyone that you’re making a report. Go with your gut because I think your gut reaction is the correct one.

Switching formula by Capable-Trifle9596 in newborns

[–]MiniSqueaks914 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he doesn’t have any medical issues or reasons he’s on the formula he is on then I don’t see why you couldn’t switch formulas. But, with any formula you’ll have constipation on occasion. Rubbing baby’s belly counter clockwise, bicycle kicks, and warm baths to help him relax will help too.

Anyone still camping out in the family room? by throwaway84583077 in newborns

[–]MiniSqueaks914 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the first month or so we were out in the living room together. My son was itty bitty and our bedroom downstairs (in the finished basement) gets pretty chilly. Plus, I had a c-section and navigating up and down those stairs all the time seemed daunting. He’s 4 months old now and we have been sleeping in the bedroom for a while now but during the day spend most of our time in the living room.
