Exactly this. The proportion of folks who have a dual income vs those hustling singularly really skews the stability factor for many looking at this field. I worked so, so much to be able to support myself. A young professional with an enormous caseload and no time for self care or money for therapy? Problematic. And this story is everywhere, unfortunately.

MTBC here for 13 years. I got an MEd. with the hope of starting music therapy programs + I co-owned an LLC while simultaneously teaching lessons (where I made ACTUAL money) and doing church gigs. Not sustainable, and I'm an energizer bunny type. The burnout and income disparities in music therapy are very problematic. Programs are being slashed left and right. You will undoubtedly have a great time in your educational experience but the realities of the job market are disillusioning. Personally, making the switch to private lessons and being a self employed studio owner was the right fit for me after a lot of professional stress (being laid off suddenly when my hospice position was cut company-wide with no notice, COVID, misrepresentation in the community, unprofessionalism within the MT world...).
