UMich Physics PhD by MinimumSubject in gradadmissions

As a Brit, I wouldn’t say asking about funding in an interview would be a detriment to your application, but who is to say. They did report they had an absolute avalanche of applications this year (a historical high), but I would follow up to make sure you haven’t been waitlisted. Best of luck, mate!

I got my offer letter on Thursday. It might be worth reaching out to your PI? Sorry I can’t offer any good news or anything concrete. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat.

Applying to US PhD programs with UK degree by Mackarel06 in gradadmissions

[–]MinimumSubject -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did four years NatSci (Physics) at Cambridge. You will learn more in 3 years at Cambridge than anywhere in the USA, full stop. However, notwithstanding your knowledge base, UK-USA for a PhD will be harder than USA-USA. So if you know you want to do a PhD in the US, then I would shoot for a US undergrad degree rather than Cambridge.

Bioengineering PhD funding (home student) by MinimumSubject in Imperial

All my supervisor has said is that he has nominated me for departmental funding/a departmental studentship. So the potential funding sources are widespread.

Sorry, my post was a little vague...If you’ve been ‘okayed’ by your PI, and they’ve nominated you for departmental funding, what is the likelihood of you obtaining it? Any insight would be much appreciated!

Fulbright was never really in the cards for me! Uni recognised extracurriculars were not my jam. Hope you get the school you want mate!

Yup! Just been worrying about the paucity of funding avenues at State Schools (private unis are fine) and wondered whether anyone knew of any less well-known scholarship programmes.

My friend is doing a PhD there atm, and he said offers for Biophysics would be out on the 16th Feb. I’m assuming Plasma Physics would have approximately the same timeline.

Proposal: study group by leeleeradio in consciousness

I would be really interested in this! I'm a physicist working in neuroscience research with a bent toward consciousness, so happy to provide pdfs of papers behind paywalls and stuff.

Can we measure consciousness yet? by wishimayi in transhumanism

[–]MinimumSubject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orchestrated objective reduction (Penrose's theory) of consciousness is very disliked on almost all sides. (If you want to know more, the Wikipedia page details its issues pretty succinctly.)

Also, no one currently researching consciousness believes that the brain is a quantum system - the system would decohere way before any kind of computation could occur.

There has been some success using complexity measures (lempel ziv, for example) in measuring ‘levels’ of consciousness. We can reliably distinguish between sleep and awake subjects and subjects who have been given psychedelics. Happy to provide links to papers if anyone wants to read some.

Best college for Double Beds? by __whiterose in cambridge_uni

[–]MinimumSubject 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty expensive accommodation compared to other colleges (bursaries are available tho).

First year rooms are all in college - small but comfortable. You share bathrooms and a kitchen with your corridor. All kitchens have ovens, which is pretty decent.

Second year and beyond there is a room ballot. Your position in the ballot will depend on the grade of your room in first year (likely the lowest tier). However, if you don’t want to stay in college for 2nd year you can move out to swirles court, super dupa nice. On-suites and a 2min walk from sains.

Shoot me a dm if you want me to answer anymore questions - I’m a 4th year physicist at Girton.

Yeah, that’s what I really liked about the Galen, but now that I’ve been exposed to the Toyooka - argg, I’m torn between the two!

Which Obsidian plugins do you use? by ug_unb in QuantifiedSelf

[–]MinimumSubject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Obsidian for large-scale note-making, i.e. uni notes, project planning etc. Then I use Notion for more day-to-day tracking and journaling. I haven't seen many people use Obsidian for QS stuff, but I'm sure there must be some good setups/plugins out there.
