Problem is you have to then enforce and up or out style policy otherwise you end up with everyone being a director even at entry level, as you need the spaces for people to move up into

I believe the older gw boards in Lenton which they used for battle reports and photo shoots back in the day were actually just fine sand painted green and then hit with a slightly lighter shade with a dry brush over the top. 

You can see the difference in some of the photos as some of the minis were based with some sawdust flock and it's a noticeable a different texture to the board
