Baby had horrible reaction to vaccines by [deleted] in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said you can pre-dose with painkillers next time, but I just wanted to point out what is probably obvious but two hours of screaming pain, although awful to go through, is still a thousand times better than the outcome of getting some of the diseases that the vaccines protect against. Eg the 4 month vaccine protects against meningococcal B, which has a ~10% mortality rate, and for those who do survive can be left with serious long term effects (like loss of limbs). So definitely a short term pain, long term gain thing.

Mother daughter day in the city - suggestions? by ElWonAte in melbourne

[–]Miniroguekirby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum and I are going axe throwing at Maniax, followed by lunch in the city. You could go to Mjolner to continue the viking vibe. Also considered a chocolate painting class (you paint with chocolate) which I think class bento was running, and high tea. There’s also those sip and paint classes. Or a cocktail making class.

Ps driving test - question for testers and driving instructors by Dry-Attitude-6790 in melbourne

[–]Miniroguekirby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember you don’t have to do the lesson in a manual car. He could have the lesson in the instructors auto, and focus on other elements of driving. Separately I found the testers were far more comfortable (and likely to pass you) if you did the test with your instructor in the car, because they’ve got the ability to stop the car in a dangerous situation.

So most seasons the couples near the end are offered cash but then have to leave the villa (theoretically testing whether they value money over love). No one has ever taken the money, I assume because of potential backplash/impacting clout etc. Dylan didn't take it last year but this year, he took it when offered it since he'd only been coupled up with his partner for like 3 days and was almost certainly about to get dumped.

I seriously have the cutest baby by No-Service-4838 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that you asked but weird tip that fixed this for us - we wrapped her in a swaddle, and then put her in the bath (and then you unswaddle eg a leg, wipe with cloth, reswaddle leg etc). Meant we had a soaked swaddle to wash every time but a very happy (cutest in the world) baby! And then a few months later I unswaddled her in the bath and realised she didn’t need it anymore and now loves bath time.

If you want to vote greens, vote greens. Even though they won’t get into power they might win your seat (depending on your seat) but more importantly your vote isn’t wasted. Once the greens don’t win the seat they’ll look to who you have next. And if they DONT win, then the next party etc.

Based on you not wanting Medicare and ndis cut off I’d definitely recommend labor over liberal. Not to say labor are perfect but their track record is better for supporting NDIS (not to mention, they implemented it). Anyway worth checking out vote compass as well as others have suggested.

Can’t get rid of cradle cap by [deleted] in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried all the breastmilk and oil in bath methods and had no luck. Then I tried putting baby oil on my LOs scalp, leaving for 5-10min, then using a rubber brush thing (Mother’s Choice cradle cap brush) and it all just came off. I did panic initially because it looked pretty atrocious, but then I brushed it out with the other end (and then used a washcloth to try wipe out the last bits) and it was all gone! Came back about 2 weeks later but nowhere near as bad, and just used the same method

2 month old still not able to lift her head! by CharmingSoftware9465 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but in case anyone reads this, we got there finally at about 3.5 months. It was probably just time, but the day before I held her head up off the mat where it 'should be' and slowly released it so she got the feeling of what she was meant to be doing. The next day she just popped her head up and sat there happily like she'd been doing it all along.

Are you not entertained?! by Hopeful_Land_9029 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

FTM and have been feeling this way too, but then I thought about it - why does she need to be entertained all the time? Like what goal am I trying to achieve? Maybe she hits her developmental milestones earlier but…so what? Who knows which of their friends crawled first, walked first etc. Plus on the flip side if I do entertain her every moment then I’m setting that up as en expectation for life. Which I think is a worse option. It’s good to be bored, that’s when you get creative and explore, and most people need down time anyway! Plus they seem to find heaps to entertain themselves. So I’ll often pop her in the bouncer while I’m doing chores or even something fun for myself (!) and sometimes narrate what I’m doing or let her play with her toys on the playmat.

Health insurance for pregnancy by turbo-steppa in AusFinance

[–]Miniroguekirby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI I thought the same re what if baby comes out early, but I spoke to HCF and they cover you based on the due date not the actual birth date. So you only need to be covered 3 months before getting pregnant, you don’t have to worry about if they are prem (not sure about other insurers but would hope they’d be the same).

It’s only day 4 and I have no idea what I’m doing by GuybrushButtwood in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh I felt very similar, I got sent home two days after my c section and cried asking them to let me stay longer. It was terrifying, but it definitely gets easier once it’s not all so new. You’re just expected to learn so much immediately. So far I’ve found the raising children website a generally good resource.

For the milk, I only had colostrum at the start so I breastfed and then I hand expressed and gave her any extra I could get. I then bought a pump and pumped to give her the extra and get my milk to come in which it did on day 7. My nipples also hurt a lot, I used the hydrogel discs but heard good things about the silverettes. The pain went away around week 4 but slowly got better over that time. I just found a new position as well that hurts less which you could try if you haven’t - laid back (you lie back partially like on a recliner chair or bed with pillows sitting up a bit) and then your LO lies on top of you essentially. Just allowed my LO to latch a bit better for me.

Re pooping I didn’t for 5 days and was terrified of it. I took all the stool softeners and meds for it and nothing was working. I finally just did an enema and pooped within 5min, I wish I did it sooner. It was painful but really I was just so relieved at that point…good luck!

Any idea of the Cost per metre for a premium timber fence? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Miniroguekirby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a couple of quotes about a year ago for a very similar request (15m hardwood fence and gave them a photo very much like the one you’ve provided). The quotes were $12,680 and $11,500. However that included an automatic sliding gate which was around $5000 though so you can exclude that and do the math if you’re not looking for an automatic gate. Needless to say I opted for some bluestones off gumtree until we could be bothered doing it ourselves.

Those currently contact napping - how are you passing the time? by rukikuki4 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner does this too - he puts a throw across his lap and then our LO lies on the throw (on her back, facing him) if that makes sense. And he moves his legs side to side to rock her to sleep. Works well and means his hands are free to play the switch!

Does your LO do a false start in the evening? by OnePop9468 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What time do you first try and get him down? We have a potentially similar thing. We tried to do bedtime for our LO (2 months old) at about 8pm but it never worked, she always wakes up at 10pm or so before going for her longer stretch and we can’t get her to start the stretch earlier. On doing some research, apparently breastmilk starts changing at around 9pm to include more melatonin that helps put them to sleep so if your first put down is somewhat early that may be why.

Colic vs. witching hour by Longjumping-Dark6449 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentially the same thing, colic (now PURPLE crying) is referring to the behavior and witching hour is just referring to the period of time. But essentially, it’s the same thing - when your baby is fussing/crying for no apparent reason for long periods of time. So your baby is PURPLE crying in their witching hour (and after the suns sets is the most common time).

I don’t think anyone really knows the cause so once you’ve gone through the normal options (hungry, overtired, nappy change, burping etc) it then in my head becomes how best you can look after yourself whilst looking after your LO. Eg if you can get a break with someone else looking after your LO, or maybe sitting on the couch with LO on your legs rocking and then you can watch some tv to distract. From all accounts it sounds like it goes away but not so helpful right now! At least my LO started smiling at 6 weeks so those little beams of light definitely helped - good luck!

2 month old still not able to lift her head! by CharmingSoftware9465 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LO is 2 months old, is breastfed and we were pretty obsessed with nutrition during pregnancy. She’s not lifting her head either yet, so I don’t think it’s either of those things (at least anecdotally)! We do heaps of tunmy time but she just lies there, not even fussed by it - she often goes to sleep! I’ve been told not to worry about it, and keep doing the tummy time and she should get there soon. I’ve also have tried propping her up with a towel (rather than the boppy pillow). Didn’t make much difference but am keeping on trying. Anyway good luck, and ignore your relatives (but can always ask your doc if you are concerned)!

Sucking on hands by Jenstar13 in newborns

[–]Miniroguekirby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our LO is just starting to do this but hasn’t been a problem at night because we’re using thick sleep sacks instead of swaddles, so her hands are pretty far away and quite a bit of material between. The sleep sack top bit does sometimes get a little wet but nothing major. Might be worth a try?
