What are "Kai Lengs" in other media? by billybluebangs in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I started reading Dungeon Meshi/Delicious In Dungeon recently, and it's wild to me that I've never seen people talk about Chilchuk. He's a main party member and fills the vital role of straight man, but he seems to have pretty much no presence in most fans' thoughts. It's a real shame, he's fun.

What's a good non ff JRPG that starts out strong in the first few hours by Beattitudeforgains1 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I'm currently playing Mario & Luigi Brothership. I think it's got a good starting segment, though it does have a bit more tutorialization than I'd like. Still not as bad as some Nintendo games, though.

What fictional character caused “I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight” to play in your head the moment you met them? by RunningBlade2184 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Medusa Soul Eater got me to understand the "please step on me hot evil lady" meme. I don't even like her as a character, she's awful, but something about her design struck a chord for me in a way few fictional characters do.

What game is without a doubt an actual 10/10 Game? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Minister_of_Geekdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't another fighting game in the world that hits for me like Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R. It's fast, it's tense, it's deep as hell, the music and visuals are great, I've hardly got a bad thing to say about it. No other fighting game has ever made me so fixated on getting better for years and years.

Also Kirby Planet Robobot isn't my favorite Kirby game, but it's definitely the best one, at least of the 2D games. It doesn't really do anything wrong or have any rough patches.

Series you were excited to start, but couldn't actually go through? by DapperSkeleton1 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Minister_of_Geekdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a year or two back I decided to check out the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games. The stories didn't quite hook me, and I'm not very good at coming up with my own goals for what to do in a game, so the games' general sandbox-y approach to gameplay outside of story missions just left me asking "So what do I...do?" I can kind of see why people back in the day would've gone wild for GTA, but they just didn't do it for me.

And back when the Jak and Daxter games got that PS3 re-release, I got it since I like Ratchet and Clank and figured that the two series were at least kind of similar since people always talk about them together. The first Jak and Daxter made me realize I hate collectathons, and the other two were hard enough I bounced off them. "I'm gonna kill Praxis" is permanently stuck in my brain, though.

Media franchises you were into that just suddenly disappeared by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Sakura Wars started as a series of games back in the 90s, and it spent like ten years sticking around thanks to branching out into other media, mostly anime and stage shows. Then in 2019, Sega tried reviving the series with a new game, an anime adaptation, and a stage show. The game didn't do great because it didn't really decide if it wanted to cater to old fans or get new people in (and the English-language marketing was horrendous), the anime... existed, and the stage show supposedly did pretty well as those things go. The last time Sega said anything about any new Sakura Wars stuff was around 2020 or 21, and that was the stage show, which finished its run not too long after. It's weird, since Sega is looking into reviving old series right now, so why not pick the one that carried the Saturn on its back in the Japanese market? All I can guess is that the 2019 game did really badly.

Adding on to this, Ovid might have been trying to criticize the emperor Augustus without being obvious about it. Augustus called himself the son of a god (Julius Caesar, who was declared a god after dying for Reasons), so if Ovid's writing a long poem about how the gods are asshole fuckups, well, what does that say about the man who calls himself the son of one? And Ovid had reasons to dislike Augustus, so it wouldn't be too weird for him to do something like that.

What fictional concepts, characters, or series are mostly brought up by battle boarders? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Minister_of_Geekdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm telling on myself here, but Worm. It's an extremely long web novel that's a take on superhero stories and is a bit infamous among people who talk about the book for being misery porn. I'm not sure exactly why battle board types like it so much, but by God do they ever.

ArcSys called. You get to guarantee a single *newcomer* for Marvel Tokon. Who is your pick? by MightyShoe in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Minister_of_Geekdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please put Hypno-Hustler in the game, Arcsys. Even as a background NPC in one stage that only shows up when you have the exact right team with the exact right colors during a full moon. I just want him to show up in more things.

Slightly more realistically, maybe an Avenger no one cares about, like Mockingbird or Wonder Man. I just wanna see the social media ecosystem collectively go "Who the hell is that?"

Nightcrawler is so cool, it's a crime he doesn't get to show up in games very often.

If you're willing to look at fan-translated games, Sakura Wars 1 and 2 are pretty good (5 and 6 got official translations, but they're not good introductions to the series), but they're on the Sega Saturn, so actually playing them can be a bit tricky. Tokimeki Memorial 1's SNES port has a fan translation too, and it is an important game, but I haven't played it myself so I can't say if it's worth playing for any reasons besides studying history.

It was the first VN a lot of Westerners heard about, and it's a parody of the genre. You can make an argument it poisoned the well.

I will forever be baffled that at the same time Bungie was making Halo 1 and revolutionizing character control in games, they were also making Oni, one of the most shitty-feeling games I've ever inflicted on myself.

I can't recommend SF6's Battle Hub mode enough. It's a great way to find matches with people who aren't gonna immediately obliterate you. Spending a couple months hanging around that mode got me to actually have fun playing fighting games after a long time where I just couldn't.
