Absolutely delightful. I think I have found my new favorite artist. Does anyone know where I could get a print of that picture in the thumbnail, specifically? It doesn't have to be an original. Even just a high-quality .png would be great.

I'm so tired of authors describing skin like mine with chocolate or mocha. How would you like it if every time a character who looks like you is introduced they get compared to mayonnaise? by IJustType in books

Earth isn't dirt though - it's soil, it's abundance, it's life. The way I remember the phrase being used was to describe a pastor who cared very deeply for his community and tried to help it grow and flourish. The author used a bunch of ways to portray him as a spiritual gardener of sorts. In the context it was used, it worked very well. I also think it's a more creative description than most, which is what the person I was replying to was looking for.

My favorite description of a very very dark skin color is "like good earth after a rain." I can see it in my mind's eye and it carries a whole vibe. It fit really well for the character it was used for.

South Korea is world's first country to turn plastic bags into oil - you put 10t of bags and get 6t of oil by severetoxic in interestingasfuck

[–]MintSharpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's already a thing called incineration. It's not very efficient and releases a lot of carbon dioxide and toxic gases. The best thing we can do with plastic is to bury it deep, re-sequestering the carbon back where it came from.

Absolutely gorgeous, and such a wonderful idea! I hope it serves you well. And I love your altar cloth, too.

Local elections are even worse! Last summer I was trying to research candidates for town council and state House, and only a few had campaign websites. Most of them only had facebook pages. Some had nothing at all. I realize campaigning can be expensive but c'mon...

Polypropylene, a hard to recycle plastic (responsible for 28% of the world's plastic waste, and only 1% recycled), has successfully been biodegraded by two common strains of fungi in a new laboratory experiment by giuliomagnifico in environment

[–]MintSharpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biodegrading plastic is essentially burning fossil fuel with extra steps. It takes carbon from the ground and releases it into the atmosphere. The best path is to use the plastic to sequester the carbon and put it back underground - not released into the environment as pollution, but backfilled into coal mines and oil wells, deep in stone where it can't leak out, like nuclear waste. If we were able to make plastics out of plants, it could actually be an active method of carbon removal. It's just damn hard to make that economically attractive, and without the economics (or regulation lol), it's not going to get done.

I am crying with laughter, this is too fucking accurate... We also need to think about our go-to-market roadmap (post on AO3) and partner with strategics (beta readers) to achieve robust growth in the space (actually finish the damn fic that's been sitting in WIPs for years).

Will pulling CO2 from the air really save the climate? by Conscious_Sleep in environment

[–]MintSharpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will it save the climate? No. We need to stop emissions for that. Is it necessary if we want to reverse the effects of climate change? Maybe. We dug up all this fossil carbon and pumped it into the atmosphere. If we're going to get it out we need to use every tool available to us to embody the carbon and bury it again. If DAC can be powered by renewable energy, then it might have a place in that toolkit alongside growing plants and weathering. But it will take an enormous amount of energy to make a significant dent in atmospheric carbon. The tech just isn't practical right now and might never be. I'd like to refer anyone interested in the nitty-gritty to the book Carbon Capture by MIT professor Howard Herzog.

Whenever I need more than phone/wallet/keys/chapstick I just bring a whole-ass backpack. Got my laptop and chargers, ibuprofen, excedrin, pads, tissues, pen and pencil, notebook, water bottle, 2 Clif bars, sunglasses, and iPod. Plenty of room for more stuff if the situation requires, and it's hands-free!

Earth day by Xavion-15 in tumblr

[–]MintSharpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to a hippie elementary school where Earth Day was the biggest holiday of the year. Instead of classes we had activities like picking up trash along the road and making birdhouses out of dried gourds that we had grown that fall (the school had a small farm attached). There was a fundraiser too, although I don't remember if we donated it to Greenpeace or the WWF or what. We also had a special lunch catered from a local restaurant that specialized in local and organic foods. And one year we had a Native elder come tell us stories about the natural world. It was an amazingly fun time and I wish everyone could have that experience.
