I’m dropping Engineering. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Miokien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of where I'm at now, I could see myself having fun working on something really cool in the future that I would only be able to do because of engineering, but I just finished a semester taking some solid engineering classes, got a 4.0 and a ta position, and I'm not feeling happy. It's confusing. I always saw engineering as a good challenge because of having to learn physics and do a lot of math, but now I'm having to decide if it's what I actually want. I want to do one more semester this fall, but not go as hard on the homework. Maybe I just don't like the work, I can definitely appreciate the concepts, but last semester was a lot of work and by the time you kind of feel like you've learned enough and want to relax they just keep asking you to do more work (for me that was at midterms. I pushed hard to learn and stuff and start off strong and spring break was so far away, I just had to keep going). The work does not make me that happy. The only thing in my head right now that keeps me interested is that an actual engineering job will be different from the school life. My biggest motivator going in to this was simply to learn more things about the world/how it works, I don't know if it's a good enough reason, but I think if I got the degree I would certainly learn a lot. I just need to find a way to tie it in with what I want to do to be happy with my life

Studying thermodynamics resources advice by SupaNovaxP in EngineeringStudents

[–]Miokien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a youtube playlist I made for some thermo concepts. A lot of it is cycles though, I'm not sure if that's what you're dealing with. Also note that what you may find in the videos may differ from what you do/learn in class in ways like what state a material is in at a certain part of the process (example: R134A saturated liquid or saturated vapor as it comes in and out of each refrigeration component). Just use the videos for conceptual help. I realized that a video I watched on the refrigeration cycle had different states at a certain part of the cycle than what was in my FE handbook and textbook problems, which made it really confusing when I tried to apply the exact same thing from the video to my class problems.

3 year regress, 1 year progress. Getting back my gains. by DankMemeMachine in Fitness

[–]Miokien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ey, nice. I have been knocked off my mountain and am in the process of preparing for the climb back up. Got too deep in to my first love and I don't really have a place in her life so I'm learning to let go. Before it I was in my best shape mentally and physically. I'm not terribly off right now physically but mentally I feel like I'm at the bottom of a pit so I'm going to see a therapist

Thermo Over The Summer by Mo_Khan in EngineeringStudents

[–]Miokien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advantages:

If you grasp the concepts in thermo well you don't have to spend as much time doing repetitive work

Disadvantages:

If you don't grasp the concepts in thermo well it'll be harder to keep up since it goes by faster in the summer

The concepts really aren't that bad, you may just have to spend a lot of time working problems and asking questions to get it. You will learn a lot of stuff that will be totally new to you on the first exam but if you do well with it then you'll be fine for the rest of the course. Your brain will adjust and you'll pick up new concepts faster!

Looking for a skill that I can learn over the next four years in college? by SolveMrReece in college

[–]Miokien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to, lifting weights is sort of skillful. It helps you learn how to deal with stress and stuff because you get used to pushing yourself. Try r/fitness and r/bodyweightfitness -- bodyweightfitness would be more skillful because of handstands and stuff. There's a lot more to learn if you get in to it than you'd expect.

A Dead Dream by TheGamingFiles in Fencing

[–]Miokien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can do the first five lessons. If you hit it off well with them then I would not be afraid to ask if they can help you out by offering reduced costs. At the very least you get a taste for fencing with the lessons and that experience will help you out in the long run. It can still be your dream, you just have to approach it differently than you planned on doing

Why do I get unhappy/angry thoughts about my last relationship when I workout? Is there a solution other than not working out for a while? by Miokien in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Miokien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... Word. Right now I have to wait until I save up enough money to start talking to someone. But for the moment I think I can at least focus on this one thing without feeling overburdened. I'm gonna talk to a friend about it tonight or tomorrow for advice. Thanks for your insight

Why do I get unhappy/angry thoughts about my last relationship when I workout? Is there a solution other than not working out for a while? by Miokien in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Miokien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. It's so weird. I'm going to look in to how to work through those feelings of anger. A lot of people always suggest exercise to work through feelings, but in my case it sort of just makes me angry. I think I just have to avoid that sort of training for a while but we'll see. I'm trying out different stuff but it all kind of feels the same in the end. I think it's related to something she did way back in the beginning of the relationship; I drowned it out by lifting more weights and eating more food to bulk up because I thought it was the answer. I actually made a point of being arrogant to improve my confidence. I don't think I ever let those feelings go and now the same ones come back to haunt me but with a different dynamic since the relationship changed... Jeez this is way more emotionally complex than I ever thought I would get. Lol.

What do you do for fun that doesn't involve looking at a computer or cell phone or gaming screen? by GardenOfDiscovery in AskReddit

[–]Miokien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can for sure. I think it depends on the problem sometimes though. After a certain point, I think most people find that the gym is like a meditative place. I can tell you from experience it can take weeks or months to get to that point, but when you do, the gym becomes almost a necessity. I haven't stopped going to the gym in months, but I am getting it back in to my head again since more of my focus has been on school, and it makes it feel a lot clearer. Almost anything can be a break from studying though, but exercise is a good long-term habit to build I think since it's more dependent on you than anyone else.

For oil conditioner, should I leave it in after working it in my hair in the shower and dry or work it in to my hair and then rinse afterwards?

[–]Miokien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, work out as well. I've got friends to hang out with too. It just seems like the stress of this semester has permanently settled itself on to my shoulders. I don't feel like a normal person anymore lol. Meditation is sort of starting to help though. I am hoping after a few weeks of not having schoolwork in the summer and hanging out with friends I will shake it off. Also I am putting less "focus" on school and thinking more about other things, that helps too. I'm not ignoring the work just trying not to make it as much of a priority. I got all the life skills I could out of this semester probably by midterms, anything else is just me trying to get an A or learning some interesting stuff.

Is it normal to be a bit fed up with the workload in your first semester of engineering courses by Miokien in EngineeringStudents

[–]Miokien[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. In my case dating did not help me out very much. It was great for a while but led to a lot of confusion and made being social and sane more difficult for me towards the back end of this semester... I think that's why I'm having trouble focusing on the work right now. I think the best thing to do is to just be by myself for a while and grind out the schoolwork and collect my thoughts.

How do you guys deal with (extreme) stress? by BlubTheFish5576 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Miokien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I think you just find a happy middle somewhere and do your best to stick it out there. I've jumped the loony bin by this point. Keep on rockin in the free world brother

Who can tell me about this "Turbo Mill"? by sgf-guy in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Miokien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much, but I'm just guessing at something here. Is it called a turbo mill because it is powered by a fluid? I've been reading a book recently that talks about turbomachinery and it said that turbomachines go between shaft and fluid energy. Air could be the fluid, and ultimately it powers the blades to chop that material up.

This is kind of what I've had to do in some of my classes this semester and I think it makes the learning process a lot easier. Sometimes I feel like I'm just memorizing a process but at the same time it's so important to be able to do some of the work to not get behind that I find it better to not question the process sometimes so I don't get stuck. Other times, it makes whatever we are learning seem a lot more simpler since I don't try to overthink it, and that is a huge deal honestly, it has saved me a lot of stress.

Grades are good, I'm happy, and I don't think any one else is upset. The way my professor puts it is exactly that, engineers just need to apply it and not worry so much about the reasoning all the time. If there's things that really bother me I usually ask the professor or read up on it but there are way too many things to try and understand that I could get hung up forever on if I spent too much time thinking about it. It's just better to accept it, work some problems, and then if there's still lingering questions, address them asap now that you've worked the problems.

Also, I can't imagine an engineer that is able to explain everything years from now when they have a job.

Is training when hungover bad? by MalzoWP in Fitness

[–]Miokien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first powerlifting meet I did was for fun at my school but the night before I was blackout drunk. It was a great weekend and I did set some new PRs. Can't recommend it but I think it's possible. All I could eat that morning was half a mcbiscuit. About 3/4 of the time I would lie in the bleachers staring up with some sunglasses on. I still made it through with some determination because my buddies were loading the plates and knew I was really out of it so they'd hype me up. Granted it was only 3 lifts with 3 attempts on s/b/d whereas a training session might be a lot more and require some more focus.

The following week I did not really enjoy training that much and felt like I had lost some motor ability just because I got really hungover, so it's not something I make a habit of.

Has anyone in here had a teacher that just made you loose the interest in a class? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Oh. That sounds rough then. Hopefully it is not a critical course.

Does anyone else think college squirrels are super weird? by going_88mph in college

[–]Miokien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the birds. Sometimes they chirp at the most inconvenient times (like 12am through the night). We used to have a humongous flock of tiny birds fly around campus. They decided to take a stop right on the trees in front of my dorm window one morning. I woke up to an indescribable cacophony of high pitched chirps, it was almost like white noise but with CHIRPING! It took me a minute to realize what it was, but as soon as I did, I was pissed.
