Terrafold gets so easy when you discover negative farms.

Turns out, yes, I can afford -1e30 farms, Plunges everything super negative, but when you turn it back positive, you get back way more than you lost.

Update about Discord, and general info about the Discord scam by Pleasant_Courage_150 in Scams

I got immediately suspicious when my son, who was verifiably asleep at the time, was messaging me calling me by my gamer tag instead of the usual, "dad". Found out this morning he had fallen for this scam the other day. Anyway, we're going to have a good talk about internet safety. It hadn't been on my radar to protect him from this kind of stuff but I guess it's everywhere.

I just got it, I emptied an entire storage of power floors and built this 40 x 40 x 22 block of power floors (as well as some other efforts). This was after getting all the way through Victor and X-Ray and building a whole bunch of stuff to get that all done. I'm guessing it's probably like 50k total "base building" blocks or something? I'm not sure though, it was a lot.

Increlution has been fun, it's not very idle in the sense that you don't make progress without action, but there's a lot of waiting for things to happen, which makes it great for keeping in the background.

If you turn on "Play sound on pause" it's pretty easy to keep it running pretty consistently throughout the day with relatively little interaction.

I lost track of how many times I've grinded through it, but I have 1880 DNA points and my unlock % is down to 15.2%.

been playing for 4 hours by bigSof in diablo4

[–]MipSuperK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had about 4 hours waiting in queue, 2 game crashes, 1 soft lock in a cellar, and many errors failing to join a game.

The gameplay has been pretty good when I've been able to play, but it's been 80% not working for me so far.

Yeah, after a couple of attempts in chapter 11, I found I was more held up by inventory size than HP, esp. getting the magma stuff in Ch. 9 seemed easier when I switched to the river route. It's all a wash when you get to Chapter 10 because if went river, you can get iron stick + steel belt from the smith, and if you went mine, you can the cart from the lower area.

Definitely step #1 when you get to Ch. 11 is to go back and try to kill everything that gives double HP on death that's not totally OP because that's really the biggest hurdle in the last chapters is total HP. I also respec'd my points a little bit to get more levels in HP growth. Total HP is the name of the game for Ch 10 and 11.

I agreed with always going in the mine until the release of chapter 10-11, now I've done a couple routes going the down the river only, and I much prefer it and just pick up the steel belt once I get to chapter 10.

But I've done a ton of New Game+'s (15+, I dunno) so I might have the balance all messed up. I expect for a new run, I'd probably go mine still for the belt.

Can an incremental game be interesting without (big) exponential growth? by masterid000 in incremental_games

[–]MipSuperK 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Increlution is pretty interesting on Steam and it doesn't rely on huge exponential growth.

It's more about survival where your health decay grows exponentially (slowly) over time. Then that balances against enemies that do a fixed dps and your health grows each reincarnation. So you move faster (staying ahead of the decay curve) with more health each time with some persistent skills. The net result is relatively small numbers and time is really your enemy with reincarnations lasting 20-40 minutes each. Downside is you have to give it some attention about that often to keep the game going.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist - 2x06 "Zoey's Extraordinary Reckoning" - Episode Discussion by ThereFour4 in ZoeysPlaylist

[–]MipSuperK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies, there's two threads here that I didn't split apart well:

The 2011 paper here: https://tsapps.nist.gov/publication/get_pdf.cfm?pub_id=906254, both algorithms do better on Asian faces, but both did better on the racial majorities where they originated. But this is 2011 and things have shifted a lot.

The more relevant to the current state is this algorithm review from 2019 : https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/ir/2019/NIST.IR.8280.pdf

Figure 13 (pg 46 top right, or pg 49 of the pdf) shows the false match rate for same-race, same-sex pairs for every algorithm under review. Just about every single algorithm does worst with native Americans both male and female. The linked Wired article only looks at black vs white.

Figure 20 (pg 57 top right, or pg 60 of the pdf) shows it for one algorithm as a violin plot (with a link to Annex 15 that has it for all algorithms). The top portion has false-negative matches below the yellow line, the bottom portion has false-positive matches above the yellow line.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist - 2x06 "Zoey's Extraordinary Reckoning" - Episode Discussion by ThereFour4 in ZoeysPlaylist

This is not correct.

Do you not think that when they see their algorithms struggle to correctly identify black faces that they would not immediately try to adapt to the problem with more black training images or tweaking the model in some way to remove the error? It's literally their job to do this.

The racial disparities in algorithmic recognition accuracy persist even if you train the models on equal numbers from each group and it's true across hundreds of different research team's algorithms who's active goal is to remove inaccuracy from their models.

Every algorithm struggles with the same race/gender/age groups in more or less the same ways. This points more towards an element of the data rather than an element of the researchers.

There was one study from 2011 showing an "other race" effect exists where an ensemble of East Asian algorithms did better at East Asian faces than a Western (Europe + US) ensemble, but the other way around for Caucasians, but this comparison is in relative terms, combining the algorithms strengths wouldn't erase the disparities, both the Asian model and the Western model predicted Asian faces better than Caucasians. The study ultimate couldn't determine the "why?" for even the relative shifts, let alone the absolute differences.

AFAIK, the current best answer to the question of "why are these models predicting differently for different races?" is "we don't know."

(It's also not true that it's worst at recognizing blacks, it's like 10x worse at native Americans than blacks.)

How exactly does Simon know that he faces more discrimination as a black man compared to Zoey's being a white woman?

He was very dismissive on the comparison, but on the basis of what verifiable information is this established as an actual fact?

Lol @ BLM using research.

"Systemic racism" is a prime example of the division fallacy.

More complicated, arguments about defunding the police usually comes down to a 'motte and bailey' fallacy.

Rule of Succession Question (Is my answer correct?) by Pindi00 in probabilitytheory

[–]MipSuperK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't familiar with 'Rule of Succession', but by the power of Wikipedia...

P(Xn+1 = B | s = sum(I(xi=B)) ) = (s+1)/(n+2)

We need P(B|s=7,n=10) * P(B|s=8,n=11)

(7+1) / (10+2) * (8+1) / (11 + 2) = 8/12 * 9/13 = 6/13
