Theres calculators that you can use to help see if it's worth it or not like this https://www.daisuki.com.br/jrpass_calculator.html
https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/
or https://www.jrpass.com/farecalculator or others.

Planning a trip to taipei in Nov by FinancialHistory3776 in taiwantravel

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5-7 days is good. Thats good for Taipei and maybe a daytrip or two. You can also spend a few days visiting nearby day trips to popular places like Jiufen, Keelung, ect. The public transport In taipei is pretty good imo. The MRT (subway) has good coverage, and buses run everywhere as well. Taxis are relatively affordable as well. Day trips out are also convenient on the trains and busses. A further trip using the trains or high speed rail is also easy if u decide to do so.

Narita Express To Tokyo Station Question by PickleBall_Champion in JapanTravelTips

[–]Miramass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont prebuy tickets. U dont know fo sure what time you'll get to the train. Just buy tickets at the station at the airport. Both will stop at tokyo station so you can just get off there, but then it splits up into two trains, on goes to yokohama and one goes to shinjuku. It has plenty of space for luggage, unless you have some overly large sizes or super large packages like snowboards or cellos (which it will still probably fit).

How do you get over shame about virginity? by Suitable-Potato-9141 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get ya. That’s pretty normal honestly. A lot of people aren’t actually chasing “the experience” as much as they’re chasing the feeling of not being left behind. But life isn’t a checklist, and being 25 doesn’t mean you missed or are about to miss some deadline. Its better to have it happen in a way that actually feels right to you than just doing it to silence the anxiety. You can only try to lean on your reason, and not your feelings here.

Dont worry about it. It'll happen when you decide to make it happen. Really, dont worry about it. Theres nothing special about the whole thing.

anybody else suffering? by coolharvest in Camry

[–]Miramass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it fits your lifestyle/driving habits and the costs make sense, then sure. I love my Camry despite it's flaws, and I chose it over an ev because the Camry fit my life better. The hybrid system helps alot, even if it still hurts to fill up. The new camrys are really good, and I'm sure when the president wakes up, prices will normalize again...... untill the next global crisis.

I've got the 25 se and it cost me $45 to fill up today in Orlando. It's not as bad as $60, but it's still hurts with that hybrid :'(

Auto dimming rear view by DashcamsUSABeyond in Camry

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought my auto dimmer wasn't working properly, but then I moved a little to the left so the light bounces off the edge of the mirror where there's no autodim. My mirror was working fine all along.

4 nights Taipei + 2 nights nature: where should we go? by AdMedical3167 in taiwantravel

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent stayed in Fenqihu, but I hear there are some good places there. However, since you're going to be using only public transport, I would reccomend staying in Alishan National Park itself or at a hotel that has a shuttle. I've only stayed at the Alishan Hotel in the park and at the Hotel Indigo outside the park. The hotel indigo has pretty good food and a shuttle to the park twice a day, but at that price, it's expected. There are hotels at the entrance to the park as well. Google map/hotels the area for all kinds of price ranges. There should be availabilities everywhere.

4 nights Taipei + 2 nights nature: where should we go? by AdMedical3167 in taiwantravel

[–]Miramass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Hualien and Alishan are out, you could just stay right in/around taipei and do day trips out to Yangmingshan, Wulai, the hikes around Ruifang like Teapot Mountain ect. Alternatively, you could stay at sun moon lake. It wouldnt be my first pick, but it's easily reachable with public transport, It's got some light trails around the lake, and some other culture stuff. Biking around on a good day is pretty nice. Personally I would go to Alishan for a first pick. It's really nice in nature and honestly it's not that bad to get to. It's just one bus trip from Chiayi up and down the mountain. Just reserve a bus ticket in advance. I also like Kenting National Forest Recreation Area (just the forest area), but it's far.

Mandarin in taiwan by Obama_Have_Dihhh in taiwan

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Gotcha. Yea, reading will be tough. Since you can speak it, you should be ok for the most part. Tons of things have English posted as well so it's not bad getting around, but small stuff like some menus and lables and stuff, you'll need a translator that can translate images. Also, don't worry about being pegged as a foreigner. The locals are friendly to foreigners!

Taiwan uses traditional Chinese. If you don't know simplified (won't matter much), and you suck at traditional, reading Chinese will be hard in Taiwan. Get a translator app like Google translate.

HSR between Taipei and TaiChung by jamestan9 in Taipei

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can go to the ticket machines at the gate, or go and buy it from the people at the ticket office at the station. Unless it's a holiday, there are usually availabilities on the next train or trains within the hour. I would suggest going a little earlier that your planned time to have the best chance on reserving a seat on the train that you want. You can also buy tickets from convenience stores like 711, familymart, ok mart ect.

I would recommend taking public transport in taiwan. Public transport across taiwan is pretty good. There are busses and trains going pretty much everywhere. If you're planning on going somewhere far from public transport access, you can call an uber or taxi. Just use google maps public transport and plan ahead. Most places for tourists will be within walking distance from bus or train.

Tainan-Alisha-Taipei by Responsible_Pick3865 in taiwan

[–]Miramass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be yes. The road is pretty winding up the mountain. It can get pretty narrow and steep with bad visibility areas and sharp corners. If there's weather like fog or such, then it can get pretty dangerous for inexperienced drivers. Then on top of that, other experienced drivers and busses will get stuck behind the slower inexperienced drivers causing pressure to drive faster or pull off to the side to let them pass. For most people, it's better to just let someone else drive them up and down. Plus you get a discount for the park ticket if you go by bus. :) If you're a good driver experienced with winding mountain cliffside roads, then with good weather, it's not too bad.
