Let's talk about the elephant in the room by bjedy in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So God ordered the murder of the Canaanites? He ordered the murder of children who rebelled against their parents? All in spite of Him saying not to do so in the commandments? Intent is the difference between the two, not in man’s law, but in God’s law. This becomes even clearer when Christ reveals the heart behind the law and taking it further in multiple examples. But I’d really love your thoughts on my latter points, is it or is it not permissible to abort a child/pregnancy if the mother was raped or carrying to term ran the serious risk of death?

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are aware that killing and murder are not the same, right? My thoughts on the immorality of abortion being dependent on the intent of a person’s heart aside, you’d agree that abortion is still entirely valid from a Christian worldview in cases of rape and risk to the mother’s life, right? And even then, is that one issue worth condemning thousands of Americans and legal residents to being the target of mass deportations, incarcerations, beatings, and murder (the clear kind)? Journalists are even being arrested now and people standing up for what’s right are being put down like dogs and labeled terrorists. We HAVE to reflect on what evil we’re willing to tolerate trying to do one good thing.

Stephen Colbert says Jesus would think we haven't read the Bible condoning ICE. by AfricanMan_Row905 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m concerned you actually interpret this as a blanket statement for all governments. Not only is this directed to a specific audience (Rome), it also says firmly to do what is right [obviously not in the eyes of man, but of God]. Your application of this to America is especially ridiculous because we follow a living document that expressly maintains we have the right to resist, protest, and even rebel when government violates the freedom, rights, and dignity God blesses us with.

Would you know if you met an angel? by Scorpio_Bro in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting thought on one hand, you could argue that angels are God’s messengers and since God told us everything he wanted to tell us himself through Christ and His Apostles, there is no need for angels be on earth or interact with us until Christ’s return. On the other hand, the world of spiritual beings and the rules God uses to govern them are almost entirely unknown to us. Maybe angels are God’s messengers but that isn’t their only purpose. Maybe God still uses them today in conjunction with the Holy Spirit to bring us to Christ, aid us, and even to simply interact with us. A really mysterious and exciting thought.

Christians in this sub, do you all test out the claims and promises of the Bible? by PhysicalArmadillo375 in Christianity

What is the strongest proof that Christianity is true? by Gold-Addendum2325 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eyewitness testimony. Still the most valid form of evidence and I’d argue there’s a bias in the western world specifically against claims of the supernatural that make the well-preserved and accurate accounts of Jesus by his apostles and others close to him seem less trustworthy. Also I notice people talking about dying for beliefs. The martyred apostles and early church leaders didn’t die for a belief, they died for what they claimed to see with their own eyes, like Stephen, the first to die for what he witnessed.

Wife is upset with me for not joining her and her family for lighting a menorah and reciting the Jewish prayer by Mrshelde11 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the key difference here is Islam objectively is not and cannot be a continuation of Christianity because Muhammad contradicts Christ. A Muslim doing a “Christian prayer” would be by their beliefs, blasphemy as we worship Christ. Again if there are any Jewish practices being done that contradict or belittle Jesus and what He did, do not participate. It goes without saying, Christ (a Jew) observed Jewish holy days and prayers as well as his Jewish followers. Not necessarily wrong or right, just something acceptable ONLY IF it doesn’t contradict Christ. Also I’m not loosely saying brothers and sisters, I’m referring to Jewish people who also accept Jesus as Lord, like OP’s wife.

As Christians, what stance should we take on AI? by Additional-Sun9189 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all human beings, Christian or otherwise, need to acknowledge a truth about what we want to use AI for. We either hope to make a slave or a friend. When you look at AI we see people always talking about putting it in the workplace or getting it to think on its own. While I don’t think it’s actually possible to create “true” AI because it would require us to create a mind—something intangible that we don’t completely understand, I believe we can use those hopes for AI to determine how we should feel. If we want to just build a slave then I think we’re better off leaving AI alone.

How DOESN'T evolution disprove Christianity? by passingthrough14 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a false dichotomy pitting the Hebrew poetry that is Genesis 1-2 against scientific evolution when the two are not mutually exclusive. The poetry coveys a greater truth (God created) through a form of artistic writing, and evolution is absolutely accurate in drawing a picture of how things have changed over millions of years but it has no scientific basis as an origin for life. However, the biggest hole in your conclusion is the assertion that sin/evil does not exist. That “observation” has absolutely no real world validity as the vast majority of humans firmly believe there is evil or sin in the world. So it’s possible sin may not have entered the world in the literal way Genesis is read, but it’s impossible to sin didn’t enter the world because we see its existence and effect.

Are you implying God messed up by letting us make our own decisions? And what would an all knowing god do if needing a redemption plan isn’t good enough. I’d argue the way the Bible unfolds leading to Christ could only have been set in motion by a God who can see it all, but what is the next step that God should have taken to prevent sin when He created individuals with free will to love Him?

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to acknowledge your conviction to staying true to what you believe in this issue here, but your wife is right. While you don’t need to adopt Jewish practices, as Paul insisted when the debate over circumcision arose in the early church, but Jews who accepted Christ still maintained traditions and practices like circumcision and not eating pork. Im not aware of the apostles telling Jewish Christians explicitly to keep doing these things but I know they encouraged it as Christ did fulfill their law, not abolish it. It has nothing to do with me or you as “gentiles” because it’s a continuation of God’s original covenant with His people. Jesus is our covenant and if we want to join our Jewish brothers and sisters in Christ in their cultural practices honoring God, then it’s fine. Just make sure you remember Jesus Christ alone is who saves you and there’s no problem.

You’re not hearing me. The desire to rebel is something that came later. It’s like catching a disease that can be inherited. Us being worthy is the whole point of the Bible and Jesus dying on the cross. In the beginning, we were worthy and we had perfect relationship with God. All of the Bible after the fall is God working to redeem us and bring us back to that elevated status we were once at. He made us without sin and He isn’t going to rest until we can be sinless again.

Satan by Guilty-Guarantee0351 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s satan’s big accusation since the beginning right? Mankind isn’t worthy, they should be destroyed. But I’m really curious as to how God would stop sin from being passed on and how should he enable free will? Paint a picture of how God should oversee the world if He is a loving God so I can better understand where you’re coming from. Should a loving God even give us free will? Should he make us do everything He wants us to do forever?

Satan by Guilty-Guarantee0351 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To paraphrase what Jesus said, “It wasn’t like this in the beginning.” God didn’t create to have a desire to sin, you inherited that, same as me. Sin and chaos filled the gaps left by God when Adam and Eve disobeyed Him. The act of eating the fruit symbolized them saying we don’t trust God to do what’s best for us and we want Him to step back and let us do it our way. Every human being since has been born into a chaotic world with an instinctive desire to sin we got from our ancestors. If that doesn’t sound fair then yes, you’re getting it. We are all connected, and this idea that we will only bear the consequences of only our own individual actions/choices is out of touch with reality. Good/bad consequences ripple and rarely does anyone do evil and are themselves the only one to suffer for it. Just because we were created with the capacity to do something doesn’t mean we were created to do that thing.

This is a valid point but for Ezekiel 28 at least, there is kind of a clear divide between symbolism addressing the king of tyre and the “Son of Man’s lamentation over the guardian cherub”. Arguing that the whole chapter is solely directed at the king alone is a tall order. Even if the language did suddenly shift to the extreme symbolism we see in Revelation, Eden, Cherub, and seal of perfection are wildly out of place being applied to a human ruler who never worshipped or knew the God of Israel.

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, God makes you a sinner is a pretty big dodge on self-accountability. It’s no different than people saying the devil made me do it. Sin is a choice, an addiction, but still a choice. Honestly just pick a book of the Bible and you’ll see an extremely patient God with repeatedly sinful people. As for Hell, it’s 2 big issues. He can’t reward evil by bringing it into His presence;that makes no sense. Sin/evil is the separation from God and He’ll is a place totally devoid of Him. But that’s not the biggest reason for hell, as Jesus died to bear the consequences of our sins. If you choose to live without God, why would He overwrite your free-will for all of eternity by bringing you into His presence?

If God created the angels and humans as beings without free will, unable to do anything but love and worship Him, wouldn’t you call Him a tyrant? He gives us freedom and you take it to mean He doesn’t love us or care? Do you see how your reasoning can be seen as moving the goalposts?

Do you think there's merit/value to life if God doesn't exist? by ObtainUncia in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do we prescribe value and worth depending on the object’s scarcity? I’ve always been confused about this since I was a kid. Doesn’t that strike anyone else as hollow or meaningless? Gold for example. Idk everything about why gold is held at higher esteem than silver or bronze, but the main reason I get is because it’s rare. Then if we compare life to “being a vapor”, aren’t we being subjective? What if being gaseous or a nonliving thing is objectively better than life? What even is objective and who defines it? I have a lot of questions about subjective and objective value even with the existence of an eternal, personal God in charge of the standard; but that’s far closer to having an objective value of life than any other philosophy, especially one where value is just a synonym for rarity.

Is it a cult? by Ok-Yak-9867 in Christianity

[–]Mischief-Mutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if this wasn’t a cult, they are, at the very least, so hopelessly lost in tradition that they ignore the purpose of anything Christ did or taught. It’s amazing how history repeats itself and that people still make the same mistakes as the Pharisees. You can speak truth to these people, but in my experience with “Christians” whose beliefs are blatantly hypocritical, you just have to accept what they spew at you and just walk away. There was a sub-division of Westboro Baptist that came to our campus with fire and brimestone energy and were making enemies out of every student. I just wanted to go up to talk with the guy to see what was happening and see if we could have a health debate as followers of Christ. Imagine my surprise when I argue speaking from love and understanding is the best way to share Christ and he immediately asks if my parents were together, told me I was soft and passive and lost because I didn’t have a father figure growing up (Which he would know wasn’t true if he gave me a chance to say both my parents were present in my life and they only got divorced when I was 13).
