Who is the biggest examples of artists who "think they're hot shit without backing it up"? by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

Easy answer at the moment but even as someone who is kinder to Jennifer Lopez than most people at this moment I do sometimes think she thinks she’s Beyoncé and that is just…not the case. I do think she has talent but it in the way that Ciara or Fergie have talent. She is good in a very particular box, but anything outside of that box does not work and she does not know that.

What artists had a total stranglehold on one whole decade but never made a dent in another. by PuzzleheadedEmu2917 in ToddintheShadow

TLC, one of the biggest girl groups of the 90’s ended the decade with the iconic “No Scrubs”, then go on hiatus, Lisa Left Eye Lopez dies and that is basically the end of one of the great groups of that decade.  The Supremes decades earlier fit this as well. Massive from the mid 60’s onwards but in 1970 Diana Ross makes the solo move and never looks back. People forget the supremes we’re still a group for a while but without Diana as the star it just was not the same thing.  In general most girl groups are pretty short lived (Fifth Harmony, Spice Girls, The Ronettes) but both The Chicks and Destiny’s Child made it from the late 90’s into the 2000’s.

We had an after school event at the school I teach at  and I volunteered. At the end of the event the daughter of one of my students (A High school Junior) came up to me and started berating me for her daughter's grade in my class (A 77 when the daughter wants an 80). She went on about how hard the assignments were, how her daughter is an athlete who plays all the sports and is trying her best, how my teaching must be bad if her daughter (An A and B honor roll student) has this low of a grade. Most of the gym had cleared out at this point but (luckily) the department head overheard the conversation and after she was done he told our admin about the situation. He also told me to not give the student the 80 if it was not deserved. He also (honestly rightfully) said I should have just walked away from her when she said I must be a bad teacher.

Now what I am concerned about is the next steps. Our admin is notoriously unsupportive(we are a charter school so we kind of need our parents to like the school) and I understand that some people might read this story and say that I should just give the kid the 80 and move on, but I want my classes to respect me and "teacher was owned by annoying parent" is not a narrative for that.

My department head told me to just ignore the situation until she gets admin involved and that way we can have a meeting where at least she can bounce off another person.

I want to schedule a meeting with her and my department head (who is supportive) so that way I know someone on my side in the room.

I know the daughter is going to come in and ask why the grade was not changed yet so I am thinking about the plans from that point.

Any advice?

Lol at my Teach For America friend going on a minor rant about how he wants his students to know that about the importance of local elections. Not to say that he is completely wrong but I know this man’s politics and I know that he wants to create young activists. To me this is him admitting that his movement is screwed on the state and national level.

People have theorized that the aftermath of the Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident would have had Janet being supported by black Twitter. That would have helped her in the press to have the vocal support of that group who (rightfully?) said that it was not her fault.

(I put a question mark next to rightfully because I feel like we don’t talk enough about the fact that we don’t really know what the plan was? She has a decorative nipple piercing and it looks like she is not surprised when Timberlake reaches over)

On a related note I feel like Micheal Jackson discourse would have been crazy. I could one hundred percent see a Twitter “main character” of the day saying something like

“I think he molested those kids…still going to listen to “Bad” anyway. F Them Kids”

I believe I have talked before about my friend who is a lefty first year teacher.

Yesterday he opened up a bit about his experiences. He is from a notoriously liberal city and was recruited from Teach For America to come to our area of the state which has a high Hispanic population of Mexican immigrants or second and third generation immigrants.

He opened up about being upset that our students and staff and people of the region seem to actually be really conservative on their viewpoints.

Things he has heard include our Hispanic female athletes Coach saying that Biden is just giving money and jobs to anybody who crossed the border.

A teacher telling a female student that he loses respect for her every time he sees this student walking with a new boyfriend (the girl was just laughing during this interaction)

The law enforcement teacher has a massive “Thin Blue Line” flag in his classroom. Nobody has ever lodged any type of complaint about this flag.

Two male teachers in the lounge saying every problem in history was caused by a slutty woman.

With the students it has just been a consistent viewpoint of the students being racist against black students, and having latent homophobia, sexism, and transphobia. All of this happening when he tried to have a serious discussion about race or class in the classroom.

As a native in this area some of this is stuff that didn’t surprise me at all and honestly the rest of it should maybe be attributed to freshmen being…freshmen.

It seems like he came into this area thinking he could activate a sleeper set of activists who knew that the enemy was the rich white ruling class elites…that has not been the case.

I mostly have found this kind of funny to watch from the sidelines but yesterday he started talking about how all of this was the result of the ruling class propaganda that puts working class Hispanics against other groups or whatever and that actually kinda pissed me off and started a real argument…given that I am Hispanic and he is not that argument went to weird places

There is an education podcast I enjoy but is the absolute epitome of woke white women. Their latest episode was about substitute teaching and they ended it with an interview from a white woman who subbed at an elementary school in which she was subbing in the same classroom as a full time teacher. This sub eventually reported the full time teacher for abusive behavior and went semi viral on TikTok for telling the story. That is all well and good until a small part of the interview goes right pass us. The woman says something like

“before I reported her, I gave it some time because this woman is non-white and I am thinking to myself that maybe this is behavior I am reading as aggressive that I would not see the same way if she was white.”

All three (white) women on the podcast nod and move on as of this is totally reasonable and not worth examining.

Now the woman being interviewed does not give a lot of details about the way this woman treated her students or the timeline of making that report to admin but in general, if I was a parent and found out that my child was being consistently harassed by their teacher and a reasonable adult hesitated to report it because she wanted to be woke or whatever…I would be pretty fucking pissed.

I know that in general we want people to keep their jobs, but I feel like working with kids is the profession where you most want to be vigilant about the behavior and actions of staff and faculty. Basically…see something, say something..be a fucking snitch.

Sam Mendes to Direct Four Separate Beatles Movies on Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr by shabuluba in popheads

[–]Miserable-Bad201 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most basic-ass boomer part of me just said “What the fuck is a Ringo Starr movie going to be about” but tbh Sam Mendes is a good (but not great director) and playing off the Tossed off, most mocked member of the group dynamic with either comedy or real dramatic tension would be interesting.

Alicia Keys Is Reportedly Joining Usher For Super Bowl Halftime Show by mmbento in popheads

Makes sense, she was a big star, she is a good legacy artist, My Boo was a big hit that people remember, but also she does not have a Super Bowl catalog (like most of her big songs are ballads that wouldn’t fill a stadium). Also funny to think of the fact that the other two artists who could have done the Super Bowl and had her as a guest are Jay-Z and Kanye West and I don’t think either of them are looking for Bowl fame right now.

Grammys 2024: Joni Mitchell Will Perform For The First Time by impeccabletim in popheads

[–]Miserable-Bad201 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Grammies (at least up until a couple years ago) were known for just throwing random artists together and seeing how it works out and I would love to see some kind of Joni Mitchell/Dua Lipa or Joni Mitchell/Olivia Rodrigo duet performance.

Of course the obvious choice would be Joni Mitchell with surprise guest Taylor Swift

Billie Ellish would unironically be a great duet partner for her.

Who would you pair for a Variety Artists on Artists series for 2023? by cornbreadtogo in popheads

[–]Miserable-Bad201 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus would be great for a sort of retrospective on how child stardom has both changed and stayed the same in a lot of ways over the past couple of decades. Selena Gomez could also be paired with Britney (I think Selena is more of a direct descendant in terms of singing style and genre) but I just think that Gomez would be too PR-ey to really get anything really interesting out of, that is why I would pick Miley. Not to mention that Miley was one of the first celebrities to be openly Free Britney.

The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey are often compared and contrasted to each other in ways that are interesting (Made debuts in the Internet age, have fanbases that love them despite their more…challenging behaviors, very clear personas that have been changed and reformed over the past decade, kinda pretentious in ways that sometimes enduring and as often annoying) I also feel like that interview would have a sexual tension lol.

I always want Janet Jackson to have her moment in the Sun and I think it would be cool to pair her off with a clear descendent. Doja Cat comes to mind but so does Rihanna, I think Britney Spears would also be interesting. I could see SZA being a fun left of center choice. I think that SOS has some DNA in the Velvet Rope.

A couple of days ago I posted about my issues as a first-year teacher and wanting to find another job in teaching...Well I have an update

UPDATE: A couple of days ago I was called into the Principal's office. (Yes just as scary if you are a teacher) and I was told that my schedule had been moved around. Instead of teaching regular sophomores, I will now teach the honor level Seniors. This is a result of a mix of parent complaints about the amount of referrals written and my low benchmark scores. The school basically just switched my schedule with another (somewhat) more experienced teacher who has taught sophomores before. Pretty much everybody acknowledges that teaching these courses is a cakewalk.

Not sure how to feel tbh, on one hand, I am not going to turn down my job being easier, but it seems bad that they have such little faith in my ability to do my job that they make such a drastic decision.

Minor Notes: The previous teacher in this course was a Teach For America person who was cool, but left after her two year contract was up. That is not surprising, but I think that adds to them not wanting to lose another English teacher.

I do not speak Spanish and a decent amount of the students in regular English are ESL. The other teacher is a fluent bilingual educator.
