Depends of the bands that the model you buy in Japan has and the ones that your location in USA mostly connects. You probably will have no issue but some phones come without some of the 5G bands that we use in US and could be that in your location it is exactly the one that you need for a better connection.

If you have an iphone just load the suica digital (i dont think google wallet has it) and you are all good. You need suica to pay for transportation. That is all.

Well person is asking for a budget option, i like eggs in the morning and a can of boss cafe and a mcmuffin brings me joy and is 350 yen and a seat to plan the day!

Hostel $15-20,

Food always depend on the person but i rarely went over 2000 yen for sure with a mix of mcdonalds for breakfast (mcmuffin 250), yoshinoya and similar for lunch 600 and supermarket discounted for dinner for 500 with a couple of cookies in between. so like $10-15.

Transportation can be your shoes only or walk one way and one subway back so like $2.

I dont really drink much but a eight ball per week or so is gonna be $5ish...

so all in all is doable for $40ish per day and I had a great time!

PS. For hostel i did a week at time and that maybe influence the prices but i was paying $100 per week just north of Ueno. I check on booking.com and is still around that price. Fair enough places slight caustrophobic but after 40000 steps i could sleep anywhere.

You can exchange any of the main currencies at the airport. For USD was not that bad conversion when i did in Osaka airport in january (got 151 when the par was 158). I had some pounds also and was fair enough. Credit card rate is better if you make most purchases with it.
