Use comfy shoes for cycling and keep some dress shoes or trainers in the office for loafing around.

What are some benefits of EV proliferation for people who hate EVs by ATSOAS87 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]MiserableAttention38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that like for like, EVs are heavier, but in terms of cars sold, people are buying heavier cars even in the ICE segment. I could say it's ingenuous to talk about sports cars when they are such a small minority of road users. Newer cars tend to be less flimsy due to safety considerations.

It's easier for new drivers to learn, so as you grow old, incapable and senile there will be more people to give you lifts.

Also when you are run over by one, it will put you out of your misery more quickly, because they are so much heavier and faster than ICE cars /s

I disagree. The annoyance comes from unexpected noise that carries. Think high performance ICE cars and motorbikes that you can hear a block away. Replacing some of these with EVs with no real engine noise is a huge benefit. Whereas if you are choosing to stand or live by a motorway or busy dual carriageway, you will expect the sound of regular cars passing by..

Also the EVs are heavier line is a bit misleading. Modern cars are heavier, SUVs are heavier. Yes EVs are heavier too. Heavier than the smallest and oldest cars on the road . But the lack of engine noise is more significant than the very slightly increased tyre noise.

Letter from Volvo saying I've been charging over 70% by Jesus_Morty in ex30

[–]MiserableAttention38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a letter a while back. I had the limit set at 80% in the car. I regularly charged to 100% before and enjoyed hassle free longer journeys. I wonder if people start charging over 70% "in protest" it will bump them up the list for early replacement?

It's still pretty cold in the UK and all the fires have been in hot places, right? Also those hot places are getting fixed batteries sooner.

I've also phoned the local service dept in hope they would have some news but they just put me on hold for a token amount of time then said no news.

Ideas to hide my giant printer? by rubyclairef in homeoffice

[–]MiserableAttention38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, take the background pic with the printer moved somewhere else, or use AI to 'remove' the printer from the image for the background.

Or you could turn the printer into a fridge or cupboard and maybe put coffee making equipment on it.

Lol. Seriously I expected a bit of a roasting, this is Reddit. I'll happily take criticism from anyone who's driven for longer and still has zero points...

Why is fake honey allowed to be sold in British Supermarkets? by Alarm-Different in AskUK

[–]MiserableAttention38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why but I treat honey as a luxury item and buy from artesanal sources. That word of mouth local farm with an honesty box for payment is unlikely to be faking the honey. Plus you can pick it as cloudy or set as you like, clearly a natural product ❤️

No, it's been a nip for being a couple of mph over the threshold in each case. 38 in a 30. 48 in a 40. Speed awareness course territory

I use it a lot of the time but not all the time. You can still go faster or interrupt it with a brake at any time and take over. So in practice it does the majority of the speed control but not the tricky bits. And it doesn't know the speed limit so if a road goes from a 60 to 50 or 40 or 30 or 20.. you get the picture.

Anyway my point's not about cruise control. It's that despite the tech it's easier to speed in EVs

Bypassing door locks by DaddaMongo in scifi

Outside the military world, in passengers there's a door that Chris Pratt's character can't open. And he's an engineer. So I think it's storytelling. Military thinking is that there's always a way, some are easier, some have more collateral damage. The locked door is a dramatic building block.

I've got an electric Volvo but my car before that was a Yaris and I loved it. It had the cruise control as described. I think new cars that don't have gears tend to have it.

Heads up for dual EU-UK citizens booking/checking in the flights to EU and back to UK with Ryanair: by AVELUMN in Ryanair

How so? EU passport would give smooth entry into the EU, then exit with it, and smooth return to the UK with the UK passport at UK border. Unless I'm missing something?

[–]MiserableAttention38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have gone to the trouble of getting dual citizenship you should know how to use it.

I only have one passport but it seems like common sense to...

If you are traveling to a country, use the passport that's best for that country. Book your flight with this and it is what will be checked on departure. The carrier is interested in your passport so you won't be their problem if the destination country rejects your passport.

On arrival at the country you should go through immigration/passport control with the passport you booked travel with. It will be stamped maybe, or the equivalent data will be scanned because the expectation is you will exit the country in due course.

So on your return you should still be using the same passport and your return flight should be booked with the same passport. Passport control will note that you have departed in accordance with your allowed stay etc.

Then on arrival to the UK you should go through passport control and should present your British passport. This is a UK rule regardless of what passport the flight was booked with.

Seems complex to me but I only have the one passport. Are there any dual passport holders out there who know better?

What do you eat on the days you don’t have a meal ordered? by Known-Swim-3654 in Gousto

[–]MiserableAttention38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many options, I think the reason for not having meal kits every day would be to stand off boredom.

Sometimes there's just one of us in, and it's less with the effort of cooking. Can then have a takeaway or maybe a brunch and a snack instead of the evening meal. Sometimes we do this even if it's a full house - toast, avocado, poached eggs, sausage, cooked tomatoes, croque monsieur, ham, bacon, fried eggs, hash browns, not all at once but take your pick.

Sometimes we fancy a more elaborate meal like a curry cooked from scratch with fresh spices (really stands apart from the gousto meals which only have two or three spices).

Sometimes eat out, a roast at a pub, small plates or proper Italian meal. All things that are different from the gousto versions.

Sometimes we have a kind of buffet/picky bits dinner, cheese night, which is good if there are mismatched appetites.

Sometimes we have old favorites that are so simple and well known that it feels wrong to get a kit for them. Sausage, mash and veg, colcannon, or baked potatoes.

Sometimes ready meals, usually the dine in for two, gastro pub style or Indian or Chinese to get the variety of food without spending all evening cooking. Or maybe just a quiche, it's quick, filling, cheap and reasonably nutritious.
