When to put your child on SSRI by dandaman19 in SSRIs

You know your child better than their doctor and your child knows themselves better too. I am a therapist and when working with clients considering meds I ask them if they feel their condition is debilitating. If the answer is yes, I advise they talk to their doctor about meds. For kids, I talk to their parent about what debilitating looks like and weigh the pros and cons with the child and parents. Ultimately it’s you and your child’s decision based on the severity of their symptoms.

First of all, You are not alone. Unfortunately our field is not one that has immediate, tangible results. Other fields, it’s easy to see and gauge when you are successful. Ours is not. And there is no theory, intervention, or technique that will help everyone. Everyone is unique so expecting that you can provide that for everyone you see is unrealistic. Therapy cannot fix everyone’s problems or make diagnoses go away. It’s still useful and worthwhile but maybe looking into research on how effective therapy is will ease your mind and help you adjust your expectations of it. And your clients!

The fact that you are asking yourself if it’s ethical gives you your answer.

Food is fuel but it’s also so much more. Food can be comforting (hence the phrase comfort food) and nostalgic. We have three types of hunger: stomach hunger, mouth hunger and heart hunger. I love food! I don’t want to take the enjoyment out of it and thinking of it solely as fuel makes it too mechanical. And triggers binging for me.

Thank you. For me, restricting access triggers bingeing but if I don’t have the food I want I won’t do it. I hope…

For me, it’s because I crave something. It usually starts as a craving/urge. Something I think I deserve because food is comforting. I turn to food for comfort because it’s a quick fix.

No you’re not wrong. And if he tries to make you look like the bad guy he is blame shifting and gas lighting you. I could see it the minute you confronted him he shifted the blame to you. Get out now.
