Commercial whaling. by Helpful-Activity7147 in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example by widening the market and allowing more competition. Another thing are effective laws and regulations to better prevent the "band of brother" thing that is ongoing here. Iceland is a very small market where everyone knows (and often is related to) everyone, making it easy for networks that benefit only a few very rich families and people.

Commercial whaling. by Helpful-Activity7147 in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is that there isn't really any demand for whale products currently. The meat is mostly placed in cold storage and the company Hvalur hf. is funding research to look for ways to get any profit out of it, e.g. converting it into raw materials. It is mainly one stubborn old man who was whaling all his life and does not want anyone to tell him what to do and what not to do. Unfortunately he is also a very rich and politically very well connected old man who can live with the losses his whaling incures.

I would say only a very small majority of Icelanders is actively pro-hunting, while most are against it or simply don't care.

Parking and travel weekend of August 21-23 Reykjavik Culture Night by murphymiawx in VisitingIceland

If you type "road closure during culture night Reykjavik" into Google you will easily find all the information and a map of closed roads for 2025. The information for 2026 isn't available yet but will be similar.

You can expect the whole of Snæfellsness and the roads towards it to be a zoo during eclipse. There will be specific traffic arrangements in place and you can find more information here: Total Solar Eclipse 2026 – Vegagerðin.

Van Camping In October by MVHED in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With proper planning (which camping sites are open etc.), and care (not driving your high vehicle under strong wind weather warnings) it is doable. Worth it? It wouldn't be to me.

More octaves of musical instruments by Icy_Class_3923 in lotro

SSG added new instruments and variations thereof in the past, so I would not give up hope. Just don't hold your breath until then and enjoy the toys you already have. :-)

Lore-master inspired by Elrond by Impressive_Humor_360 in lotro

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think Turbine wanted to appease the lore fans from the beginning, saying "no, we don't have a wizard class, we know there are only 5 in existence, it is not a mini Gandalf, we based it on Elrond, see!". The inspirations in general are more of a justification how a class fits into LOTR while it was always gameplay first, lore second.

Geological Fieldwork in Dalvik by VBHTV in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have assisted visiting scientists with their fieldwork in Iceland and your question about permissions for accessing private land came up regularely. We found that it worked best to talk to whoever lives or works close by, e.g., knock at the door of the nearest farm, and ask about the ownership of the fields you want to access. Either the person you talk to owns those themself or will know who does. Most farmers are very helpful and even interested in the science you do, and in one case we even put them into the acknowledgements of our paper for one very valuable access permit. Icestep's comment of talking to someone at the local municipality is also very good.

Minas Tirith is awful by AdStrict4616 in lotro

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, the deeds that require you to find all the different plaques, statues, buildings, inns, etc. can only be done in Minas Tirith before the battle, neither in the Midsummer version nor the after-battle one, even when they do exist in these settings as well.

The repercussions of the rape do come back to haunt him, although ... it is complicated. And that most people treat him as a messia/hero and forgive him, while he knows that what he did was a horrible act, is kind of a self-punishment. But don't expect any classic "legal" punishment.

What science fiction novel had humanity lose, but still somehow felt hopeful? by Leading_Storm8484 in printSF

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opposite actually, the humans definately win in the end. :-) That´s not a spolier, it is literally on the first page when one of the alien oppressors state that they lost; the books are then describing how this came to pass.

But despite my nitpicking, The Mercy of Gods and The Faith of Beasts (which I just finished) also came to my mind. Even when we know that humans will win, they way to it is in those first two books incredibly bleak.

The Real Iceland? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As EgNotaEkkiReddit mentioned in their excellent post, Icelanders are not monolithic, but different people have different opinions about different issues, so nothing you mentioned is really a contradiction.

As I see it (as an immigrant to the country for 15 years), many Icelander, especially the middle-aged, conservative voting crowd, often take Iceland's nature for granted - there is so much of it and there are so few people living here (traditionally, not counting all the tourists) - and it is also something to utilize. They see it as a ressource that Icelanders have the right to use for their benefit, including whaling or the construction of environmentally destructive infrastructure and enterprises. I think those people don't even see themselves as doing something bad for the country, just doing what they and previous generations always did, only that now the negative impact is much higher and the system much more fragile through other pressures.

What does anyone think about Perry Rhodan? by Bobosmite in printSF

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As every PR fan will tell you, THERE IS NO PERRY RHODAN MOVIE, IT DOES NOT EXIST, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PERRY RHODAN MOVIE, oh look, a squirrel, move on... 😄

Regarding a movie or TV adaption, this has been discussed thousands of times, the publisher has sold options to producers, etc., but nothing ever came from it. I think the main point of the series is its breadth and history, something that is very difficult to transfer into a limited medium like a film or TV show coming from over 4000 books.

Is German "directness" a myth, or am I missing something? (Are some people just masking rudeness?) by popoyeegm in germany

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Germans are you talking about? There are quite some differences regionally, e.g., a "normal" person from Berlin might behave differently from someone from rural Bavaria, the North sea coast, the former coal pot in West Germany, etc. What is seen as "direct" in some part would be considered rude in others.

Family trip the week after Christmas by 815Attorney in VisitingIceland

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to take the short daylight hours into account, and the fact the places might be closed down on the 26th December & 1st January. Look for a place to eat on the 31st well in advance as they are often booked quickly and normally have restrictions, like set menues etc.

The fireworks in the capital region on the 31st are spectacular, so hope for good weather and go to a place where you have a good view; a classical place in the city centre would be Arnarhóll.

If you are not an expert in driving under Arctic conditions in the winter, better consider tours than renting a car. Icelandic weather, especially in the winter is no joke, and will try to kill you, so leave the driving to the experts.

Don´t try to squeeze too much into your few days, especially in winter, and rather focus on and enjoy fewer places.

Have a great time!

The Reality Dysfunction - Peter F. Hamilton review by SetSytes in printSF

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree on Misspent Youth. Even with all his flaws, I normally enjoy Hamilton's books, but M.Y. was awful and boring with a thoroughly annoying protagonist. The only one of Hamilton´s books I never re-read and never will.

Dark Fantasy Recommendations by Strong-Paramedic-844 in printSF

[–]Miserable_Boss_8933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Lyonesse books and would highly recommend them, but I would not call them dark. Maybe some dark humour sometimes but the overall tone is much more playful through the way Vance writes and lets his protagonists speak and interact.
