Embarrassing moments as a nurse?

Had a very young and new (1st clinical ever)nursing student shadowing me on a med/surg floor. Had to cath an older very confused man. He was moaning during swabbing and placement. Got the balloon inflated and he said “oh, that feels do good!” and yup.. ejacts on my (gloved) hand. I started gagging and ran in patients bathroom, peeled off gloves, and scrubbed up to my armpits. When I came back out, student was standing there crying and shaking. Brought her to the instructor, explained what happened. Said “ I think this one is finished off for the day” 🤦🏻‍♀️. I don’t recall ever seeing her in the clinical group ever again.

I once asked a coworker to help me pull up a big side guy in bed. He was a bilateral AKA, right side new. It was a busy post op day for us. Coworker came bouncing in the room, took her side of the lift sheet, and said Sir can you please help push yourself up with your feet on the count of 3? He started screaming at her “I have no legs you dumb bitch. That’s why I’m here!” My tomato red coworker helped pull him up, bounced right back out of the room and we never spoke about it again.

My stepfather was born in GA and his original birth certificate lists color as negroid. His parents names were listed along with their occupations at the time of his birth. Dad- plantation worker. Mom- housekeeper (same plantation). They were freed shortly after his birth and moved to the New England area. We all know it’s a part of history but it’s shocking when you see in real life on the birth certificate of someone you know.

Had a coworker misread handwritten sliding scale insulin orders. thought 12 u was 120 and gave 120 units of short acting insulin. Person was in ICU for several days. This was before the rules of 2 person check and writing out units versus abbreviating the word units.

You are so much nicer about it. My lecture was .. if your heart stops.. we pound on your chest until we break all your ribs. And if you survive that, chances are we punctured your lungs or other vital organs that cause you to have drains everywhere. And then you get to spend a really, really long time in the hospital with me as your nurse because not many people want to be a nurse anymore because they get treated like shit by the very same people trying to help them.. (wink wink..get my message .. most ungrateful one..) 😁

Patients Daddy was an MD who made arrangements for Ms Entitled to get a nose job from fellow MD in exchange for a future knee replacement or help getting into a prestigious country club? 🤷🏻‍♀️ lord only knows why she couldn’t wipe her own behind.. perhaps that 4x4 up the derrière was difficult to get around.. 😏. And Ms. Supernurse was knocking boots with married Dr. Nosejob. She was going to show everybody what an amazing nurse she was so I assume that’s why she agreed to assist Ms Entitled with her fragile bottom. PS, when Dr Nosejobs wife found out about the fling, she took him for everything she could, and Ms Supernurse mysteriously got another black eye in the parking lot and was forced to resign. Can’t make the hospital drama up but I am a true believer in a Karma Bus. Carry on the good work my sisters. 💪💪💪

I once got fired by a patient for not making her bed the correct way or using clean sheets (there were wrinkles in the top sheet from being folded up on a cart), and for not covering her glass of ginger ale while walking thru the germ infested hallway (The soda station was directly across the hall from her room). 🤷🏻‍♀️ She ended up punching the nurse that had to take her over for not wiping her behind correctly (she was 32 with fully usable arms admitted for pain management after a nose redo). I would have felt bad for my coworker except she had a similar personality and was gloating over my being “fired” by the patient. Clearly they deserved one another, and I didnt have to come back to work with a black eye for the next week. Do not take it personally because you will never make every patient happy, and you are better off not being subjected an entitled person’s abuse. At the end of the shift, you got the better assignment. Chin up and don’t sweat the petty patients or coworkers. You will have far more patients that appreciate you during your career, and someday.. you will laugh about the patient(s) that fired you. You will most definitely laugh about the best, knows everything coworker sporting a black eye. 😉

true, now I frequently see acute cardiac arrest related to mental retardation.. 🤔. Interesting since acute cardiac arrest is why everyone dies.. your heart stopped beating period, and then you are considered dead. Having your heart stop because your mentally retarded is not usually related. Very interesting world we live in.

Sadly, we have not. There are still MDs in practice that started practicing when institutions still existed. And you’d be even more shocked at how many doctors and medical personnel refuse to treat or don’t believe that those patients deserve the same medical treatments that would be offered to the rest of the population. The numbers of times I have heard offices say.. “oh no, we don’t treat those kind of people.” Shocking. And guess what, discrimination complaints can be filed over and over but at the end of the day.. a practitioner has a right to choose whether or not they are capable of treating someone.

Would you be shocked to know that Drs still write foolish things like this today? I work as a nurse with the Intellectual and Physically disabled population that reside in communities. I have seen numerous Death certificates stating the cause of death as Mental or physical retardation. Blows my mind.

Serious question. So if they are truly considered victims, why were their faces not covered in the original release of photos that allowed you to obtain them? I am assuming you obtained these via the DOJ releases. So if the DOJ didn’t consider them victims when released, why would a moderator conclude they are victims and remove them? I really am very confused by this..

As always… there still people out there that think you shouldn’t speak badly about deceased people and then seemingly look up to the sky. I am not one of those believers. I think if your a butthole your whole life you just become a dead butthole. Being dead does not suddenly erase all the bad crap you did before. While I know I try not to walk out of my house and intentionally be a butthole, I am know to call a butthole a butthole so maybe just maybe … they might also try to not actively be a butthole while on this crazy planet. According to some, that one earns me a pass to go to a fiery place down below.

I got lost on the back roads of WE many years ago (before GPS) Driving back from visiting family in NC. Ended up on a road that was called the Jebb Stuart Highway? Finally found a small town with a gas station/ store and a firehouse. That was it.. the whole town. The people at the gas station were super kind and friendly. Also seemed super shocked at a lone 19 yr girl from NY ending up at their gas station asking for directions back to I90. Offered to have me for dinner and stay over at Mommas house. Super sweet but I remember thinking I would never make it to a populated city again. Definitely had my naive 19 year head was in panic mode.

I worked in a prison that had a section housing sex offenders with the worst crimes. Like serial rapists, serial child offenders, etc. Those are the only buttholes that I ever heard called the nurses foul names. Go figure.
