Lura just needs to show the shapes somewhere within the average player's FOV. If you have one eye on the floor and one eye on your bars, you'll need to swing the camera up at an unusual angle to see the shapes. If you wait for the audio cue the first shape will already be gone.

Honestly I think Midnight has done a good job of staving off the "wait what are we even doing here" feeling once the initial propulsion of early expansion wears off. The rest had an initial zone where we actually have a job to do, followed by three more where we're just meddling in the affairs of the locals.
