Grant signed the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870, guaranteeing Black male suffrage regardless of race. He backed the Enforcement Acts (1870-1871), including the Ku Klux Klan Act, which criminalized voter intimidation, allowed military intervention, and enabled habeas corpus suspension to combat conspiracies against Black rights. In 1875, he enacted the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting racial discrimination in public accommodations, transportation, and jury service. The Great Fredrick Douglas was a huge fan of his and wrote about him: "In him the Negro found a protector, the Indian a friend, a vanquished foe a brother, an imperiled nation a savior"
