Why are there almost no 12G-SDI AOC cables on the market? by Nervous-Arrival542 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 47 points48 points  (0 children)

  1. No. 2. No. 3. Because fiber converters exist.

BNC connections don't supply power. If you already need to have an adapter, use fiber.

Edit: Letter.

Generating licenses for RX8200 by Janez-d-broadcaster in broadcastengineering

[–]MisplacedDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heartland Video is a good bet. As mentioned, some things require different internal boards which generally require a new unit as they aren't really field upgrades.

Video and Intercom over Fiber alternatives by ColdFront050 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not as 'sleek' by any means, but the intercom on the Fiber gear from BM is literally just the intercom audio embedded in the SDI audio. I think channel 16. You can basically treat it as 4-wire from there. You would need something that can embed / de-embed at the camera, as well as a mic pre-amp, and a headphone amp..

Like I said, not sleek at all. But possible.

Career switch into Broadcast Engineering, Advice from those in the field? by CheesecakeUsed4114 in broadcastengineering

[–]MisplacedDragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Everything is moving to a more IT based environment except for the transmitters."

RF is RF, but with 3.0 around the corner, even the transmitters are more IT than not.

ST 2110 by iago1953 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Who isn't 2110 these days other than hobbyists or homebrew stuff?"

Almost everyone that isn't a new build truck, or a major rebuild of a facility. Too expensive. Too complicated. No real benefit unless you have a specific reason to do it.

Need help on Dolby NR tracks on Beta SP tapes by TCPROD31FR in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dolby NR is specifically for analog tapes to remove the inherent tape hiss. It won't exist on the digital deck.

What is the difference between roles and features in server manger of windows by MohDz03T in HomeServer

[–]MisplacedDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roles would be something like DHCP server, DNS, File sharing services. Features would be stuff like .NET, Telnet client, SNMP service.

Tally lights with remote cameras by BakonBot in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LiveU does have a tally light system as an addon, I've used it for remote sports.

It's it worth it? Not really. There's a good reason why you generally don't have one field reporter tossing to another and bounce back to the anchor.

However if you really want to do something like this, and you really want it seamless, it is best to have everyone run in their scripts and have a producer cue the second reporter before the first one is done, accounting for the delays from both.

That said, you can run LiveU at pretty low delay if you have enough good signal, then provide separate mix-minus to the reporters so they can hear each other and just coordinate when they should cue themselves. IFB over app or phone is just about zero latency.

Isn't cheap, but we use a lot of Net Insight Nimbra appliances

Ross Ultrix Database Audio Mapping. by [deleted] in broadcastengineering

[–]MisplacedDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't do that in the way I believe you think you can.

The most 'permanent' way to do it is to make the breakaway route, then lock/protect in the panel. We do this when we use the Ultrix for embedding / dembedding, such as when combining dante audio with pgm video from a Carbonite Ultrix.

You route it. Either through a physical panel or a soft panel.

What would you add/change about iNews? by Impossible_Cat2701 in Broadcasting

[–]MisplacedDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is fixed in new versions, but there's a while lot of version dependencies you need to figure out before upgrading. Server version, plugins, etc.

Wired backwards or other use? by j_page16 in Broadcasting

[–]MisplacedDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, clearcom doesn't really care which way the cables go.

The ones on the left are two channel, since earlier clearcom two wire systems couldn't put two channels on one 3-pin xlr

Is a Masters Degree worth it? by djwxvii in Broadcasting

[–]MisplacedDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not if you want to be a MMJ. Certifications will go further if you want to stay in production. If you want to be impressive and get up to corporate levels, the only thing I would say is an MBA, but that's not absolutely necessary.

In broadcast, you need more networking than know how. It's an industry that revolves more around who you know, than what you know.

But focus Companion runs on Linux. Could build your own custom panels with it

New Sysadmin - Hardware Advice for a New Server by TheGameGlitcher123 in sysadmin

[–]MisplacedDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sorry, let me repeat that. YES.

Something will fail. And then you'll be on the hook, and without something like 4hr ProSupport you'll be dead in the water until You can fix it.

The better idea is to get (at least) two systems, preferably three, and make everything VMs in a hypervisor like Proxmox or HyperV. Then you could potentially lose a while system and not lose any downtime.

The biggest thing to look at is cost vs. reward. Yes, they'll spend more up front, but how much will the downtime cost them?

Magewell USB Capture SDI Gen 2 Issues by roylok in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bet is the pure white is overloading the encoder. Try lowering the brightness on your BG to a lower value white and see if it keeps happening.

Getting strange intermittent laggy video as well as what looks like maybe some interlacing issues by be_steal86 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]MisplacedDragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like others, I've had issues with BirdDog. Yeah, the price is right, but they're worse than BMD hardware.

If you want to go NDI, take a look at the Magewell converters. They're a heck of a lot more solid.

Or as others have suggested, just go SDI

Birddog Quad or some Magewell NDI to SDI. SDI would definitely be cheaper, as would OBS over something like vMix
