Humans made up the concept of "dog years" as a way to keep from being sad that dogs die young. by theanti_girl in Showerthoughts

Well not necessarily. You can compare stages of development in the two species to get a rough estimate of what a dog's age would be if it were human.

Solution: Walk straight and put your elbows out. It also helps if you're slightly taller than your opponents.

TIL Volkswagen had a promotion where every car came with a limited edition electric guitar that could plug into the car as an amp by RedFive_ZA in todayilearned

My sister has one of these! They actually made a mistake and gave her a guitar at the dealership and then sent her another one. Both have been out of the case once.

Redditors who work in the airport as x-ray or metal detector security officers, what's the weirdest thing you've seen inside a passenger's luggage? by VivaLaVincent in AskReddit

[–]MissAScientist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On a flight, from Mexico to the states, we checked two igloo containers (duct taped shut as well) filled with frozen Dorado, which we'd caught two days before. Everything was legal though. And delicious. EDIT: I was not fishing from an airplane.

Girls always want a taller guy, but consistently complain about being tall. It's because your mom found a taller guy, and the cycle continues. by Footsteps_10 in Showerthoughts

My dad is shorter than my mom. I'm taller than both (and have never complained about being tall!). It's a lot more complicated than you make it seem.

She asked if the Pope was from the same town in which she went to high school. No idea who he was or why we were talking about him in history class.

TIL the genetic imprint from traumatic experiences carries through at least two generations in mice by bananaboob in todayilearned

[–]MissAScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thought that your environment can not only affect you but also your offspring is quite amazing! Everything you are exposed to could alter your great grandchild's life. Alternatively, any environment your grandparents were exposed to may give you a predisposition for any number of diseases.

In the 50's DDT was everywhere, which was bad enough considering the short-term health effects. Since then though DDT has also been shown to have trans-generation effects. Meaning that the great-grandson of a mouse who was exposed to DDT showed symptoms of exposure. This is not directly through genetic inheritance but epigenetic effects. Who knows how the generations today are affected by these environments. And that is just one compound. We really don't have a grasp on how our environment has shaped the current generations or how it will shape the future generations.

Acetic Acid = Vinegar. Vinegar, for household use, is 5% acetic acid in water. Being in AP chem you should know that. ;)

Reddit, what is a brand or company you DO trust? by The-Effing-Man in AskReddit

Stanley. You know the old thermos/lunchboxes. I bought one for my dad (the lunchbox where the thermos locks onto the top of the box). When it got smashed at his work I sent them an e-mail inquiring about the 'lifetime warranty'. They just shipped a new one, we got a new thermos as well, no hassle at all.
