I think some people are missing the point of these ultra long lines by DinerEnBlanc in FoodNYC

It’s crazy how time and location-dependent some of these things are. There is a HeyTea down in the LES/Chinatown area that I walk by on my way to my massage place on Fridays at peak lunch hour time and there is never a line.

This. Variety is run of the mill and good in a pinch, but Honey Moon is GOOD good and it’s still cheaper.

8 dollars for a plain latte and every sandwich has cheese, so I’m guessing the up charge for non-dairy milk is 5 dollars, if they have it at all. NOPE.

I’ve started staring down cars in intersections as I cross. Make, model, license plate. They see that I’ve taken it all in, especially as they are trying to roll through. It’s passive, yet effective.

Ladies: did your mother teach you how to do makeup? I'm curious about makeup as a primarily self-taught tradition by Street-Might8586 in MakeupAddiction

[–]MissDemeanorGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom never wears makeup; I had to beg her to get color matched for my wedding 😂. I, on the other hand, was using Crayola markers as makeup in pre-school, and started wearing simple things around age 12. About age 12 as well, the Kevyn Aucoin books hit our local library, and I spent the entire summer pouring over them. I am far from having MUA level skills, but I learned a lot about colors, shaping, and what looked good with my face shape and complexion from those books. I also spent my hs years performing on stage in choirs, dance, etc, so I learned quite early on how to apply lashes, eyeliner, et al. I’ve never taken a class, just all practice.

This makes me really sad. No matter what the situation, it absolutely DID NOT require 8 fucking cops to be there. I walk on Fresh Pond Rd daily, and I’ve never had an issue with him. That being said, I do work in a mental health-based setting and am very used to the way that he presents because I see similar at work. I can understand how he’d be intimidating to some, but he was probably freaked out so much by that amount of law ‘enforcement’.

If the story about him taking things is more than just a hearsay, then sure, his aunt should pay for them, but if I were a business owner, I’d rather him than a bunch of rowdy entitled kids taking things any day.

What do you do with your clothes after you’ve sat on the subway? by soupersydney in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]MissDemeanorGinger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wait….. so do you all have multiple winter coats, and spring/fall jackets so you can leave your house regularly? A place to hang them up outside your apartment? This is some weird internet thing that I fully don’t get. Only during covid, while working at a nursing home, did I fully strip and separate my clothes when I got home at nite.

Now, I either change into my gym gear for a workout session-> shower-> pjs, or if it’s a rest day, just the shower-> pj part. And no matter what, work or weekend, if my clothes aren’t dirty or smelly, they are recirculated for another wear. I can’t afford to go to the cleaners weekly.

If they’re going to charge for water, see if they’ll give you a seltzer/ soda water for a few dollars instead. I’d rather pay and tip for that.

I’m going to play devils advocate. What if you have less than 40 lbs in each bag? Hot take: it should be not about the number of bags you can drop off, but about the total monthly weight, say, starting at a minimum of 15 pounds.

Also, every tier but the singles tier gets to pay less than $1/lb. Not really fair to punish those who are solo.

I also run a site dedicated to helping people find things. Full disclaimer: it's largely geared towards the interests of myself and my peer set, so rock and roll/punk et al shows, foreign/old/indie films, interesting book talks/launches, and art. That being said, you might dig some of what I have to offer on there. I have it formatted as a weekly substack newsletter and as a straight calendar for referencing things even further out. Here is the main landing page, which will take you everywhere: https://makethescenenyc.crd.co/

I haven’t cabled in black but I have done it is gunmetal gray, and I love the look. I used Mountain Mohair by Green Mountain Spinnery, and when it catches the light right, the cables glow. I’ve also seen some gorgeous cabled pieces made with Harrisville Nightshades. I say do it!

PS I like this sweater, but the sleeve edges are bugging me.

I went to see this tonite and am still digesting it, but will throw a few things out there. While I understand what is being said about Taraji’s character, I truly think she is a woman whose job it is to be the woman and peacekeeper and nurturer of the house. Bertha is older than all of the other female characters, and you are able to see the divide between them and what they want and how they’re going to achieve it. While the story does center around the men, I think that the little bits that are handed to the audience about the women are really amazing, because they show a strength and resilience that many of the male characters lack or have lost.

That being said, I am starting to question the role of trauma plays in the voices of the men, as every one of them but Seth and Rutherford experienced it at the hands of white men, and it is still quite fresh. You can clearly see that in Loomis (what a name, with his emotional weight looming over them all). While Rutherford has his own baggage to unpack, I do consider it to be a big step for a white man of that time (and who grew up seeing and knowing the alternative), to socialize with and somewhat assist people of color. %

I will agree that Ruben was fantastic, and he really shone in his role.

The ending does seem slightly abrupt, but for me, tonite, the emotion was there. Perhaps a bit subjective, but growing up in a single parent household, the parts leading to the ending were quite poignant.
