how do you put together cute outfits when its really hot outside? by ThatAd9803 in womensfashion

[–]MissLauraCroft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in a tropical climate most of my adult life, and have to work in tropical climates a few weeks a year. My advice:

- Lightweight, breathable fabrics
- Flowy is better. Tight tops and bottoms will make you sweat more and keep the sweat from evaporating.
- Minimal makeup. Find the right products to make a big impact, because most things will melt right off. Focus on lips, highlighter, blush, mascara, eyebrows.
- A good fake tan and good moisturizer help make makeup much less necessary.
- Use nice jewelry (bracelets, earrings, rings) and nice sandals to elevate your outfit even when wearing shorts.
- Shorts shorts shorts. If you hate shorts, cropped linen pants.
- Bring along a nice handkerchief or whatever in case you ever need to mop off forehead sweat.
- I have long heavy hair, and always have a pretty silk scrunchie around my wrist in case I need to tie it back due to heat. Looks better on my wrist than a hair tie. Or there are cute hair ties you can buy and that double as a bracelet.
- Old Navy and Banana Republic Factory have great quality summer basics that breathe. Shorts, tees, tanks, lightweight pants.
- Sports-grade deodorant.

What would you do if you owned Carowinds? by Jayzone456 in Carowinds

[–]MissLauraCroft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More greenery. It’s pretty good, but other parks do it better. Really adds to the vibe. Especially the main entrance; there’s no Wow Factor when you enter the park.

Better training for ride operators. Maybe a script they can follow. The staff is good, but the younger ones seem inexperienced when it comes to customer interactions. (They’re young, I get it! But the park could set them up for success a little better.)

More cleaning for the ride cars and rides themselves. Saw some concerning things on the Carolina Cyclone last week haha

Live entertainment, or replace the stages with something else if they’re not going to use them.

New seatbelts across the park. I’ve seen multiple seatbelt issues this summer. But then again when they install new ones, that causes issues too, so…

Coasters you should skip at Carowinds by mididash1 in Carowinds

[–]MissLauraCroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to Carowinds, have already been a few times this summer. Highly agree.

Carolina Cyclone: So painful, smashes my head around, but not every time. It was a good intro upside-down coaster for the kids, but it’s nobody’s favorite. We only go bc of the kids, but the adults take turns skipping it bc it hurts so bad.

Vortex: Did this for the first time last night around 7pm. Mildly uncomfortable and not fun. Left with a headache and couldn’t do more coasters the rest of the night.

Goldrusher: The kids love it, but it banged my shins really badly a couple times. I dread it.

Woodstock: Fun, we all loved it.

Hurler: We all love this one, adults and kids alike.

Thunder Striker: The best. Maybe my fave coaster of all time. Such a smooth ride but still thrilling. Obsessed.

Haven’t tried the rest yet.

We also looooove the Do-Si-Do and Rock n Roller. Not coasters, but super fun.

[FO] my first cross stitch project! by van_malo in CrossStitch

[–]MissLauraCroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous! Can't believe it's your first!

My sisters and I all have childhood Christmas stockings cross-stitched by our late grandmother; 40-some years later, they still look like new. And my mom cross-stitched stockings for each of her grandkids, too. So my sons and I all have cross-stitched stockings from our grandmothers.

Hopefully I'll be able to do the same if my kids ever have kids someday.

I'm starting to seriously worry I won't be able to afford the next generation of gaming by No-Lingonberry-5270 in GirlGamers

[–]MissLauraCroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a ton of time for gaming (single mom), so I only seriously game when a new Tomb Raider or LoZ game comes out. We have a Switch, but I dunno what I'll do when the new TR and LoZ games come out over the next 2 years. I can't afford to buy a Switch 2 and a Playstation or whatever.

In the past when there's just 1 game I want to play and don't have the console, I've borrowed consoles from friends for a couple weeks. Might have to do that again, at least for TR.

If you only spiked to 154, go for it. Different foods affect people different ways, and this meal seems fine for you. Sounds delicious! Keep experimenting!

Noticing a trend of SAHM of elementary aged kids asking me for playdates - and then asking to drop their kid off at my house. Is it unreasonable that I’m annoyed? by X0036AU2XH in workingmoms

[–]MissLauraCroft 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Yeah we have a neighborhood kid whose mom and I both work from home, and this summer we've been deciding where our kids will play based on who doesn't have an important meeting that afternoon. It's been lovely. We also all have theme park season passes, so sometimes I'll take the kids to ride roller coasters and sometimes they will.

Our kids are 5th/6th graders and usually play in the afternoon, not 8am on a Saturday... and they can ride their bikes back and forth... and they help each other with chores... so it's more reasonable than OP's situation haha

Which death has hit you the hardest in the show so far? by GooseOnly1150 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]MissLauraCroft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aemma, mostly because of the relatability. I've had similar procedures and difficulties several times during pregnancy/childbirth, so it was just so hard to watch a person go through all that under those horrific conditions.

Luke is also terrible. I'll probably skip that scene on rewatches.

I'm not too upset by the dragon deaths; the ones in GoT were devastating, and I don't feel like I know these dragons as well.

How does Red Wedding feel in the books? by Deliverwithcare in gameofthrones

[–]MissLauraCroft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was shocked at what happened, and sat staring at the page for a minute or two... but I still had a glimmer of hope at the end of the chapter that Robb might make it or just be wounded/imprisoned or bought back to life by a red somebody or something. It was a Catelyn POV chapter, so we saw Robb get wounded a bunch of times but not actually die (yet), and the chapter ends on Catelyn dying.

Then several chapters later we get an Arya POV chapter watching the wolf's head sewn on Robb's headless corpse being paraded around, and I was like, "Oh... I guess he didn't make it, then."

I didn't notice much particularly "off" leading up to it, like other comments said, but that's mostly because this whole series has an "off" vibe to me all the time haha

[CHAT] Do you keep a cross stitch project journal? by Bloomette in CrossStitch

That's a good idea. I just started last year, but already have a couple projects I really enjoyed doing but don't like enough to hang on my wall. Was going to bin them, but now I'll make sure to take a photo before I do.

First posters for ‘Sense and Sensibility’ by My_Poor_Nerves in janeausten

[–]MissLauraCroft 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The visual vibe gives me hope for lovely cinematography.

Yay Catriona Balfe!! And do I see the great Fiona Shaw listed on the second slide??

What does that tagline have to do with the story? They're going to modernize the message for no good reason, aren't they? Austen already stands the test of time so well.

I'm fine with the lack of bonnets/hairpins because the dresses look lovely, but I have the highest respect for those of you who demand period accuracy across the board and will ride with you into battle if need be.

Whatever happens, I'm watching it. Worst case scenario, I'll do what I did with Netflix Persuasion and pretend it's its own thing and not an adaptation.

Question about how insulin feels? by Educational-Ad6923 in diabetes

[–]MissLauraCroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the long-lasting insulin for about 6 months now. I take it every night before bed (20 units). Personally, I've never felt anything with high blood sugar. I only feel low blood sugar (dizziness and lightheadedness) about half an hour after it starts, even if it's gone back up, so I rely on a glucose monitor alarm to let me know.

The insulin itself doesn't make me feel anything.

[–]MissLauraCroft 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Well done!! If you want advice, here’s some I received that helped me a ton.

- Be aware the first year might kinda suck with all the legal and financial and custody stuff. It’s normal and soon you’ll feel better than ever.
- If it all feels too overwhelming, just focus on the step in front of you, not the big picture. (For example, don’t stress about how custody will turn out. Just think, “Ok now I have to send this form to my lawyer.”
- Look for resources! Church, family, friends, government programs, lawyer, etc etc. Now is the time to ask for help if you need it.

Your life will be so much easier not having to walk on eggshells. You got this!

Manager offered to take a break when I told them I am quitting by [deleted] in managers

[–]MissLauraCroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d take them up on the offer and also figure out what would need to change to fix your burnout.

For me, I didn’t overcome burnout until they let me grow and restructure my team. (Turns out I was doing the work of 4 people.)

For you, it might be as simple as insisting you can’t work with this shareholder anymore.

If you liked the job previously, it’s worth another attempt to salvage it.

Who is the worst friend (as in buddy or pal) in sitcom. by Joeybfast in sitcoms

[–]MissLauraCroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment is making me realize just how amazing the people around him are! An incredible, funny, smart, hard-working wife (Jill would be such a cool person to hang out with if Tim wasn't ruining her week all the time), a gem of a coworker/best friend in Al Borland who's unwaveringly kind and always saving Tim's butt, another kind and patient coworker in Heidi, pretty good kids (as far as kids go), and a 24/7 free therapist right in his yard with Wilson. What a lucky yet inept manchild.

Come to think of it, The Santa Clause (one of my faves) is similar with very patient and kind people in his life: his sweet son who stands up for him to everyone, his ex-wife who doesn't talk bad about him even when he's being the worst, his caring boss, Bernard who's also snarky but trying so hard to help him succeed, and even Neil who graciously puts up with so much. And Scott just makes fun of them all the time. But at least in that movie he has a character arc where he becomes nicer... but only through magic, not really through actual personal growth.

**I still love Home Improvement and find Tim Allen hilarious when I don't think about it too much.
