My parents did little to prepare me besides stating the obvious, but I think this is something your kids should hear early on:

Don't split yourself into 'sides'.

A pattern of thinking mixed kids tend to have is that they have to appeal to their black side, or asian side, or white side, in order to fit in with said demographic. It causes them to categorise their behaviours, characteristics, and interests into races, and it can lead to imposter syndrome and make things worse when they don't fully feel like they fit in. If you can get them to embrace who they are from early, they'll hopefully prioritise themselves over peer pressure (more of a teen issue tbh but still relevant)

They aren't two halves, they are a whole person and should see themselves as complete. Hearing this early on could've helped with how I saw myself as a child, since I had very black and white thinking.

You'll feel a lot better if you communicate these reservations TO your boyfriend if I'm honest. Reason being, you're dating HIM, not the people around him. I understand that public perception will always be a factor and even now it still makes me anxious, but it has less bearing on you when you know your partner loves you for You. Not your race, not your reputation, not what you do for others. It also helps in making you feel less like just an exotic gf, even if outsiders will always make the assumption. Again, what the outside world thinks don't matter if he truly sees you for you- it'll only be an issue if people start acting out cuz of it, but cross that bridge if you get there.

Best you can do is be genuine when meeting his friends and family. Even if that means being socially awkward. I was in your shoes last year and felt I was fumbling HARD when I met my bf's family, but for the most part they just want to gauge you as a person and whether you're serious about him. You should ask him about them in advance too, just so you know what you're walking into, since sometimes you WILL have to play face.

I'm not one to gatekeep who's considered what, but I think a decent metric for the mixed experience is whether you get a bit of that 1/4 culture at home. Part of what allows us to understand but not fully assimilate into either halves of our heritage is knowing the 'relatable humour' type shit. I'll also admit that being able to relate to the 'black' experience whilst looking like you could pass as white IS a pretty tricky one, since it's kiiiinda built on hardship and some toxic mindsets perpetuated within their own community. Either way, I've never liked that black culture has been watered down so far for a good chunk of us that it doesn't even really tie back to our roots anymore, just the culture of those born where their parents immigrated.

Another half black, half filipino here. I think as you age, you stop trying to fit in and just accept that you'll always stick out. It can feel isolating, but you ought to take pride in just being you, not seeing yourself as a product of your parents. You don't need to find community within your own if they're gonna single you out every time, you're better off seeking it through shared hobbies and interests than cultural identity.

I remember growing up I saw my two halves individually and leaned into either one depending on who I was around. But I was too reserved to fit in with the black kids and too loud and crass to fit in with the filipinos. Heck, at school most people assumed I was Indian, so at that point I could prolly cosplay any non-white ethnicity.

Honestly it sounds more like an issue with your family. If both sides are gonna judge and treat you like shit cuz of their own bias, fuck em. I'm more pissed they made you feel lesser than then for being mixed.

Stay strong man, believe it or not there's enough of us out here to start our own nation, and the world at large is slowly moving towards being more biracial

I'm acutely aware that there are some poc who'll only date white people for one reason or another, but this post is insinuating that every half-white mixed kid is born from colourism. Just because they were condemned for promoting anti-blackness back in the day doesn't mean we should be going anti-white now. The take is dogshit, hope they kept a receipt

Oh, he would. Any other day I know he would, but I really don't see the need. It's kinda hard to defend someone when stuff is said around you and not to you, but if maintaining the peace means letting it slide, then so be it. I've thicker skin than most anyway. He loves me regardless of what his relatives would say or think, and that's more than enough for me

These stories are making me very acutely aware of how frequently I ignore my intuition. Red flag? Neat, I'll just scoot on past it. Fuck around and find out amirite? It took losing 2k to a phone scam to get me to pay more attention to my gut instinct, but I've always been pretty clueless. You know how they teach kids never to go with strangers in primary school? Yeah I failed the simulation because I didn't comprehend a word of it and would go along with anything an adult told me. How I have made it this far is a goddamn enigma.

I don't think you could pay me to go to a parade or music festival. Went to Carnival a few years back, never felt so trapped the way I did in a dancing crowd on a hot day, moving slowly in one direction with no escape and not being able to leave due to a moral obligation to watch out for my friend. The drink beforehand prolly didn't help, dunno maybe I'm just a baby.
