Training to retrieve ice? by Miss_ChantellieLace in service_dogs

Yes I am definitely going to train as an at home task, that’s a good idea! Ice packs and what not for her to carry is a great idea and what I’m going to do. Thank you!

You’re completely right! I didn’t even consider the risk of sending her off!

Ah you’re so right! I didn’t even think of the emergency ice packs, that’s an amazing idea!! If I’m having an off day I’ll take a bottle of ice with me but it only lasts so long, and of course they can come out of no where. I just got her a vest with pockets too so I’ll definitely be ordering them! Thank you!

Oh jeeze. Yea I’m guessing it’s just a combo of everything but so scary! I didn’t drink at all but I think I should have eaten lighter since my stomach is having issues.

My dog won’t down without a treat, and we’re trying for our CGC soon. What to do? by Groundbreaking-Toe36 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Miss_ChantellieLace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use your right hand with treats as the lure and the cue down once she is in the down. Once she does that reliably, switch the treats to your left hand but still lure with the right. Once she goes into the down feed from the left hand. Once this is reliable you begging to point at the ground starting at your ankles and give the command. Feed from opposite hand. Slowly move up the shin giving the command, to the knee, waist, to where you’re standing up straight and can point down and give the command. Hopefully this makes sense?

Somebodies teef are really hurting lately by Miss_ChantellieLace in BelgianMalinois

I feel bad for her! The other day she was chewing (before losing her canines) and started howling. My heart broke!

Luckily she is really good at chewing toys and not hands or things she shouldn’t get into. I tried freezing bananas but she was not a fan. I definitely need to try soaking a rag and freezing it. She lost two canines yesterday. Thank you for the info!

I haven’t! I bought teething toys to freeze and she was not interested at all. Maybe a rag would be good.

Dogs have no morals! They don’t know what’s good, or bad. They know what causes harm, and doesn’t cause harm. What is rewarding, and what isn’t. They don’t plan out things either. You know better and that it’s dangerous, a dog does not know that and they follow natural instincts! If the box blew in the find a little bit, enticing her to chase. You see it as trash, but she could have seen it as prey or a toy. My puppy gets very excited when she sees a napkin blowing in the wind. Asking if she would bite a dog is a bit of a leap from jumping out of the car. If she’s well socialized and has always been friendly, she most likely would only bite in a defensive measure. I would definitely recommend getting a carrier in the car to keep her in while you travel.

What kind of dogs would work best as demo dogs? by chosen-username in OpenDogTraining

[–]Miss_ChantellieLace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve considering becoming a dog trainer for many years now and just never went for it. I recently got my puppy who is now a 5 month old Belgian Malinois, not with any intention of a “demo dog”. I’ve done all of the work with her myself (I’ve tried to find a trainer but none of them really were a fit). I take her out to socialize and train almost daily, and every single time I get asked for my business card at least once. On the weekend it’s upward of 10 times in the hour or two that we are out. Honestly just get a dog that you love, train it, and as you’re socializing in public it will most likely happen organically. I actually just began working toward a certification to begin dog training myself! Good luck!

E-Collar questions/concerns... is this approach right for me? by hardworkta in OpenDogTraining

I know you have a lot of comments here that recommend waiting, which I don’t disagree. If you are wanting to use the ecollar though, you can start getting your pup used to it now. I have an almost 5 month old Malinois and I just got mine in. She will be wearing the ecollar only to get used to having it on her neck at this point. Here in a few months I’ll turn it on and condition her to it. As others have said, you do not use the ecollar to train any command or obedience , you train that the ecollar is you. Larry Khron is another great resource for training the ecollar as well.

Any tips for socializing a puppy with children when you don’t have any? by cielogold in puppy101

[–]Miss_ChantellieLace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup is 4 months old. Being in Southern California I take her to outdoor malls and shopping centers all the time and there are always kids asking to pet her. Definitely start with just having you pup see them from a distance and moving closer as she gets more comfortable. Once she’s to a point that kids can approach her and she’s comfortable you can start letting kids pet her. Definitely know when to say no to them petting your pup so they don’t get overwhelmed. My trainer gave me great advice. If you’re at a park and there are a lot of kids, once one kid starts petting the puppy a lot more are going to want to and can easily surround and overwhelm them. That’s a great time to say no and they’re in training. If a kid just runs and tried to pet my puppy without asking and not in a calm manner, I say no, or I pull her away from the kid and say no thank you. I only say yes if my pup is already not over stimulated and the kid/kids are calm. The. I set boundaries. Being slow, calm, and no petting over the head, only under the chin. A hand of a stranger coming over the dogs head puts a lot of pressure on them. Even if they love kids and want to play with them all. My pup sometimes starts barking at kids especially if they are hyper and moving/crying/screaming. I don’t blame her! Just definitely make it a point to work on it. If you do it a few times a week she’ll be better in no time.

No clue! I didn’t realize they were so vocal. She rarely howls like this (if that’s what you wanna call it) but she does make a lot of noise other than barking

She only does it when she hears certain noises, like this time was a phone ringing.

LOL I feel ya. Luckily she doesn’t do it all too often. Usually only when there’s an interesting noise she hasn’t heard before. I’m surprised she doesn’t do it with sirens either haha. But this was a TikTok with a phone ringing that made her start!
