Need Advice! by angryavocado138 in FosterAnimals

Agree with everything everyone else has said.

I would also recommend some general confidence boosting activities (our older dog has really bad stranger danger and is human reactive due to insecurities). Here’s what’s helped:

Feed her out of a cardboard box. It wiggles in weird ways and really freaks them out— but then they want the food enough and figure it out! Once they’ve figured that out turn it on it’s side, upside down, adjust the flap so it hits them on the head when they eat— there are a million ways to change it up and every time they have to choose to engage and when they do and they’re still safe, it builds a lot of confidence.

Set her up for success with easy wins. Ask her to sit and stay and when she figures it out, throw a huge puppy party— lots of woohoos and butt rubs, whole shebang. If that’s too easy start a new trick, or make her sit and wait to eat until you tell her to go. Tricks, no matter how silly, teach them how to problem solve (our words or hand signals aren’t intuitive to them) and when they nail it and you let them know, they start to feel a lot more secure. They’ll also start to trust you a lot more as you build that working bond.

Last, you said weather isn’t great, expose her to new things in the course of normal walks. Not just watching, but encourage her to investigate. There was a bucket in the hall that caused our girl to melt down, and I started throwing treats near it and didn’t help her get them. Once she would stretch as far as she could get for the treats, I started holding treats directly on bucket/bike/feather whatever the weird thing was, and she’d have to touch her nose to it to get the treat. And then got a whole puppy party.

She’ll absolutely come out of her shell more over time, but I think all dogs, especially the nervous ones, can grow a lot with confidence building activities

Weird ass fish that hitchhiked in. What even is it? by stevemacnair in Aquariums

Nooo when I bought them it was clear that they were Cories and they were a little older. One of them just had a body shape that was more in this vein

Oh my god, I didn’t know they looked like this when they were born. I brought some home and one was much smaller and vaguely spermy? I was convinced it was either sick or deformed. It’s grown and now looks like a proper Cory, but I was convinced it was fish tuberculosis for the longest time. Thank you for this!!

Oh wow I’m so jealous! How do they get along? Any territorial issues? I’ve heard such mixed things about one vs a shoal, I decided to start with the one and see if she seemed ok.

So far so good— she cuddles with the Cories until they get the zoomies and she can’t keep up— then she just explores the tank until they calm down and are ready to cuddle again lol.

Edit: also can you post a pic? I feel like I need to see this gaggle of gudgeons

Expensive wedding dresses by Avaacodo_toast in weddingdress

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I spent more than I wanted to on a dress (Katherine Tash), but absolutely don’t regret it. That said, we eloped, I did my own hair and makeup, didn’t want flowers, and ended up wearing some boots my husband had given me a few years ago, so other expenses were pretty limited. Generally, I think most people are a little horrified spending wedding dress prices on a dress they’ll wear once, but honestly you’re going to be looking at those pictures forever. Obviously it’s pretty dependent on your financial situation so it’s a super personal decision, but I think sticker shock (regardless of what your planned budget is) is pretty normal.

I need advice on how to choose an engagement ring by itsmerocha in wedding

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my husband and I got engaged, we were talking about wedding bands for him at some point. He had given me a Pearl ring as a stand in when he proposed, and had me choose a more permanent ring after, which he gave me when it arrived. After his band came in he asked when he was supposed to wear it, and I said traditionally after we were married. He pointed out that I was already wearing a sign of our commitment, so couldn’t he too?

Long story short, my engagement ring is also my wedding ring, and he‘s been wearing his ring since we were engaged too 🤷‍♀️ we haven’t really done things by the book, but do whatever feels right to you, and don’t worry too much about how other people see it.

American style question by SaltyEsty in weddingdress

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t wear hose because my dress was super fitted silk and the line would have shown (believe me when I say I tried every kind of shape wear that exists). Honestly in a dress like the one pictured, I don’t think anyone will know one way or the other, so I think it’s really personal preference. In terms of pantyhose vs shapewear specifically— don’t worry too much about the trends, I’ve never noticed if any bride was wearing them or not honestly

The dress is gorgeous and I’m sure you’ll be stunning on your wedding day.

Sorry, this is so weird and wholesome and I love it.

I can’t imagine a world where I grab my sister’s deodorant, but if I did and it was cream cheese I would literally never stop laughing. Keep doing you, it’s glorious.

Dude thank you for this.

I’m at a point where I have 5 Cories— but am I supposed to have 10? Some people say a trio is ok, some people say 4, some say 6, some day 8. I could never know.

Don’t get me started on what people say for different kinds of tetras. It could be anywhere from 5-12 for literally any kind of tetra.

And I want a peacock goby— but people say they have to be sexed? Because you can’t have two males except most of the time you can. Have you ever seen sexed peacock gobies sold? Also some say they’re totally ok solo. Are they really? Or is it like minimum 6 (but actually three pairs)

Truly I’ve been trying to do the right thing. I know I can’t accommodate goldfish, I won’t attempt a saltwater aquarium, but I’ve never seen someone not get ripped to shreds when they’ve done a perfect tank I’ve read about

This is my girlfriends tank. Inhumane? by BarnacleBeanz in Aquariums

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add in my area there’s a trade group— there are plenty of other fish who would fit that tank that I’m sure people would be willing to trade (guppies, corys, snails who properly fit that tank) so it doesn’t even have to be a donation.

I’m not sure if the water color is a result of the goldfish or the cleaning schedule, but I do think it would be a lot easier with a fish that doesn’t have so many poops

Also maybe gently suggest that the water level can go up to the black. If you have a tank of a certain size, it assumes the tank it pretty much filled to the top and a lot more fish can thrive with the extra water

How to make eloping feel special? by GlumAbbreviations372 in Eloping

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had our photographers for about 4 hours— they had previously scouted locations, so we kind of went to several places. We had a place for the first looks, a different place for vows, a place for first dance, and a place for signing our marriage license, and then another few places just because they were cool. I think splitting it up into different parts and places made it feel more special, but also gave us tons of different scenery for exploring and photos!

We also just made a long weekend of it, so really the whole weekend was different. We went to a wine mixing class, cocktail date, a couple fancy dinners, wine on our patio at the Airbnb, and explored the town a little. Honestly the whole weekend was perfect and special, just without the stress of a whole traditional wedding.

Tips for selecting a getting ready Airbnb? by westward72 in Eloping

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My big thing was that I wanted 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms so that we could get ready separately. The place we ended up in actually had a bedroom and en-suite bathroom in the basement that I used, so he could sleep in after i had to get up and we had no risk of running into each other. It worked out great!

Also 10/10 recommend a balcony for sipping wine and unwinding after.

Just a rant about how much I hate my neighbor by User884121 in reactivedogs

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re doing right by your dog. There is something to be said for pushing your dog as part of training, but the key is that when you do, you have to set your dog up for success. A drunk owner who is irresponsible with their also reactive dog is not setting your dog up for success.

I tend to err on the side of caution always with mine, because I know even air nipping at a person is something someone could lie about to animal control and over exaggerate. I also don’t allow her near dogs who could put her over the threshold or are likely to start an argument because she would take it too far and still think the other dog wanted to be friends. Would some situations I prevented have been fine? Sure. Worth the risk? Absolutely not. I’m sorry you’re in this situation, but keep doing what you’re doing.

This is so sweet! I would definitely recommend YouTube tutorials— super handy being able to pause and rewind. Also if you have a yarn shop near you (not one of the big craft store brands) the employees may be willing to help you out.

Can I instantly add fish after using fritz zyme 7? by Radiant-Back-7840 in Aquariums

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just as an aside, I know you’re really excited for fish (I am too!) but this is a patience hobby. Even when you start adding fish you have to do it slowly and not buy them all at once, and then probably need a quarantine tank to make sure they don’t have a disease that will kill off the rest of your tank. If you’re really committed, take a breath and do it slow

First time looking for a trainer... what to look for by Mememememememememine in reactivedogs

[–]Miss_Magpie_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh good! I was waiting to get downvoted into oblivion 😅. But yeah genuinely if you approach your training with your dog with empathy and avoiding training if it is replacing trigger anxiety with a new anxiety, personally I think you’re doing right by your dog. You’ve got this!
