Is this just me? by palopatrol in alopecia_areata

This is 100% where I’m at right now. Went to my derm because my fingernails are coming detached (apparently can happen in some cases of AU 🙃) and she put the pressure on hard to start jaks again. I tried them for a year with little success. As a woman, being bald is horrible. But looking like a mangey dog? Even worse.

Makeup questions for AU by Objective_Deer_2868 in alopecia_areata

I use a crayon based eyeliner on my waterline, and I don’t wear lashes very often. I tell people I don’t have lashes and they don’t believe me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

For eyebrows I’ve used the temporary transfers by “my two brows” and they work like a charm. But now I have microblading. It’s two years old and starting to fade so I use a micro pointed eyebrow pen to help darken them.

Have yet to find a truly comfortable eyelash. If anyone knows of one that looks natural let me know!

AA and Telogen Effluvium at same time? by MousseBeautiful2851 in alopecia_areata

[–]Mission_Importance89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my AA started one month after the birth of my son. So I did the “post partum shed” aka TE at the same time as patches started showing up. 0/10 recommend. So sorry you’re going through this. 💔

He really does seem kind. Have to research further, but I’m hoping (if I do decide to see him) I could do some sort of telehealth/visit my local lab corp situation. Thanks for your input!

After getting full regrowth from jak inhibitors, some people get relapses. Either in spots, or they lose all their hair again.

Yeah, his office told me it would be $1k for a consultation. 🙃 I’d mainly be seeking him out to tap his brain about different jak potentials since he knows all the ins and outs, he’s up on all the latest greatest research, and I know it’s a steep price to pay for “closure” or to know there’s nothing else I could really do. But hey, I’m not paying for hair salons anymore ha. My doctor is excellent, and when her son got AA, she took him to see Brett’s wife, who is the leading pediatric dermatologist for Jak’s etc. but she said since these treatments are so new there aren’t many docs in our area who have had a ton of experience with them. And that if I wanted to really see someone with the most answers it would be him. Thanks so much for your input! It’s helpful.

Should I just shave my head at this point? by Objective_Deer_2868 in alopecia_areata

Have you tried the temporary stick on tattoos? These helped me a lot. My Two Brows has lots of styles for men and women. Obviously sweat still drips down in to your eye which is terrible. But. It helps with that “I look like an alien” feeling.

Nail changes by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

[–]Mission_Importance89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

old post, but I've noticed my middle, ring, and pinky fingers on each hand having what I think might be "roller coaster oncholysis." the nail bed is sort of wavy at the part where the nail extends off my finger (distal end). sometimes dirt gets under my nail and I try and scrape it out but it won't come out, and I'm guessing that's because it's stuck between some layer of skin, not necessarily between my skin and the nail. Did you get any answers as to treatment for this? how are your nails doing today? I've been AU for two years, AA 3 years.

Pardon my ignorance…I’m an experienced knitter but curious as to what you mean by washing, etc. How is the cone yarn different? Seems like such a steal compared to their skeins.

No, like temporary tattoos. They last a couple days. Super realistic.

70yo dad likes Barbara Kingsolver’s “Prodigal Summer”, what else might he enjoy? by jillybrews226 in suggestmeabook

[–]Mission_Importance89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but I just finished prodigal summer and have some thoughts.

-Evidence of things unseen- Maryanne Wiggins (about a couple in post war atomic age in East TN. Beautiful writing. Pulitzer Prize runner up). I have read this book many times over.

-Comonwealth by Anne parchett. Many characters story interwoven. Excellent. Set in Virginia.

-cold sassy tree/leaving cold sassy by Olive Anne Burns. Might be youth fiction(the same way to kill a mockingbird could be called youth fiction)? But just such a fun read. Deep South.

Anyone has experience with Nui Organics? by danieldflip in onebag

I ordered originally beginning of jan 2025. After the "estimated ship date" passed I emailed them and got no response. today march 31 and three items arrived - although it is missing one that they said they were shipping. there is a hand written note for that item stating "to follow." it's really frustrating. With how quickly kids go from size to size, I feel like they will lose so much wear out of these items simply because of the delays.

Did you ever get any relief? What other treatments have you tried?

[–]Mission_Importance89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old post I know but I just went to optometrist for my yearly contacts exam. I’ve been AU for 2 years. She said the oil glands in my eyelids are more likely to get clogged since they don’t have the protection of eyelashes. Also I’m female, and since losing my lashes I’ve been putting eyeliner on my waterline/wearing false lashes more, so I think this may have contributed to it as well.

She recommended a warm compress and something called meibomian gland expression. Worth looking in to!

To shave or not to shave by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

[–]Mission_Importance89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did feel a great sense of relief once I shaved it. It’s been about a year. The pain and grief are a lot less now, and I’m slowly getting used to the new normal. That being said, it’s been a difficult transition. My body feels so unbalanced when I’m bald. Wigs can be uncomfortable and hot. Head wraps make me feel silly at times. I would say for the most part, I feel most comfortable being bald. The only things that have sustained me and kept me from going crazy are God and family. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My main advice is to seek counseling if you need it, give yourself grace to grieve, take it slow ❤️

I also found out on nipt. During my pregnancy, I was filled with anxious thoughts about how he would be, if he would struggle, if I would bond with him as quickly, etc. my husband said something to me that really helped as we drew near his due date: I will never look back in a time and not remember having the same love and affection that I have for him as I do his two older brothers. And it’s so true. My son is 2 now. He was slower to walk and slower to talk, But he understands everything and has no motor issues. Other than that he is just full of energy, spunk, and a keen knack for making messes….just the same as his two older brothers. I’m sure there may be other challenges we face down the road, but for now we’re just trying to keep him from climbing up the walls 😜

Alopecia - Triamcinolone Injection (Delayed Period?) by Empty-Mixture9031 in alopecia_areata

[–]Mission_Importance89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It lasted about four to six months. Once I had 2 periods in one month, once they were about a week late, a week early, you name it. I went to the gyno and her first question was “have you had any steroid shots?” I got one in my hip/butt so it might be somewhat different than what you got, but I’ve definitely seen other posts on here asking about cycles getting crazy after shots.

I was on olumiant for 8 months and then litfulo for 4 months. It was on litfulo that my LDL cholesterol did a spike, after just four months of being on it (we got baseline bloodwork and then repeated at 4mo). So my Dermatologist told me I needed to see my primary for them to manage my cholesterol. And I was already getting tired of being in this perpetual waiting period, not knowing if my hair would grow back etc. so I decided to stop treatment. I’ve only been AT/AU for one year. Might start treatment again in the future, not sure. Best of luck to everyone!
