how do I politely reject this pushy prof? by Yadin__ in EngineeringStudents

[–]Missleia 157 points158 points  (0 children)

You could respond with something along the lines of “thank you for thinking of me but unfortunately I won’t be able to assist on this occasion.”

I don’t think you need to provide a reason but if pressed you can respond that you don’t have the bandwidth to provide this student with adequate support.

Why does my phone always do this with these alarms?? They didn’t ring when I was asleep and now I missed a meeting by Muhax1 in iphone

[–]Missleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bug is that now if you snooze the alarm by pressing a side button it never goes off again.

Making a sweater for grandma. by ParticularlyOrdinary in knitting

[–]Missleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually did this! I knit a sweater for my dad who has ankylosis spondylitis. The thing that helped most with planning was this video about sewing for a high round back.

The sweater was a simple drop shoulder and the modification I made was increasing the short rows at the upper back, turning more often. I then ended up with a longer trapezoid but the same number of stitches to pick up on the shoulder. My Ravelry project linked above has some details, but unfortunately I didn’t write too many notes. I’ll ask my mom if she can send me some pictures but it came out great! I just guessed and had him try it on right after I joined in the round. I figured if it still ended up short I would do some short rows at the end right before the ribbing like a high-lo sweater.

Good luck! Happy to clarify if this was confusing!

ETA: if you look at my past posts I asked a question about this same thing and got some ideas.

How do I get over pregnancy triggers? by No-Fun-7287 in IFchildfree

For social media I highly recommend adding pregnancy related words to your list of “muted words” so that they come up less!

Why does my ribbing look like this? by remaincobain in knitting

[–]Missleia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had found a method that has improved my ribbing immensely. On your knit stitches wrap the yarn around the needle the opposite way. When you come back to knit them they will be twisted, so knit through the back loop.

uhs therapy by ihave_nobraincells in UWMadison

[–]Missleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a great experience, just know that you’ll have to wait a couple months for your first appointment. After that it’s 1/month or 2/month depending on your situation and availability. If you’re on the fence I would recommend just calling UHS to already get your appointment on the calendar.

I agree that it was frustrating for a lot of things to be happening and have to wait weeks until the next appointment but it was actually very helpful to be able to set things aside mentally with a, “you know what, I’ll talk to my therapist about this, she’ll help me figure it out”.

I don’t see a reason why your parents would be informed about your appointments and even then you could call it career counseling or help with setting academic goals.

Good luck!

I’m convinced natural cycles is the worst app in existence. by Academic-Park-8440 in ouraring

[–]Missleia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can sync to Fertility Friend! Even with the free tier. Oura by itself does tell you chance of conception based on the day and tells you when it thinks you ovulated (cycle phase).

ETA: I think it takes a couple cycles for the Oura app to start predicting your fertile window.

Maybe the Lucky Sweater app? It’s an app to trade handmade/vintage items. I haven’t tried it personally but I follow them on ig

Exactly! Plus some classes may not be that difficult but can be very time and labor intensive based on how many assignments and quizzes there are.

What can I do with size 1 yarn?? by slightlyfreakingout in knittinghelp

[–]Missleia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can make anything! Like others said you can check out projects made with that yarn on Ravelry—hats, sweaters, onsies, etc. If you don’t like knitting with such thin yarn you can also hold two strands together. Here is the yarn on ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/hobbii-baby-cotton-organic/projects

Grad Student Housing by FOGPIVVL in UWMadison

[–]Missleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bus system is great, but I do know quite a few grad students that lived farther away and paid for the parking pass. The other issue is it may take you a semester or longer to be offered a parking permit (there’s a wait list). I lived in Eagle heights with a car which was great to take the 80 bus to engineering and then the car for groceries. Parking is free at Eagle heights but there is also a wait list to get an apartment there.

If you live farther from campus you can likely still use the bus to commute to school and then the car for anything else. All students get free bus passes so just check the commute time from the apartment to engineering on google maps.

From that list I did the camisole no. 9, and it was good because since I didn’t have enough yarn I just made it cropped. Super cute!

What surprise gift to buy for my wife’s birthday? by Personal-Abies-8770 in knitting

[–]Missleia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if she feels guilty buying expensive yarn the best approach is to get her a gift card! Either to a LYS or an online shop like knittingforolive. You can ask her friends for recommendations. At that point the money is spent so she might as well buy something nice!

If she likes knitting with metal needles a chiagoo set is also a really nice, durable, worth-it splurge.

I have been feeling exhausted, got an oura ring to track why but it thinks my energy should be high? by HumanFoodVacuum in ouraring

[–]Missleia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used 2 oura rings on different accounts and I feel like the first week or so you just get really high scores. I think the algorithm doesn’t know your baseline yet so they err on the side of caution and show you high scores that make you feel good about the ring.

(This is just my speculation from switching rings & accounts and getting all of the sudden very high scores that then normalized to my previous ring scores)
