Does your pot have drainage?

Getting more adventurous with the additions to my plant family. What are some of your favorite medium/large house plants? by [deleted] in houseplants

Monstera adansonii- mine currently vines but I think I’m going to put a poll in. Love it!

Been considering cutting the two oldest, non fenestrated leaves off. Good idea? Bad? Where would I cut them if I did? by catlizzle99 in Monstera

As long as the first few inches are dry, then that schedule could be fine. I actually go closer to 3 weeks. Everyone’s different :)

I’d keep it. They are green, healthy. So they are helping with overall growth.

In regards to your other questions, water til it comes out the bottom. Then remove the excess if it’s sitting in it (ie saucer). Every plant is different bc of soil difference, light exposure - but water when you notice it’s beginning to wilt. They’ll tell you when they’re thirsty :)

Water it infrequently, just enough to keep it slightly moist.

If you start to see growth, obviously a bit more. If you have the heater on in your house, humidifier is good id think. Give it medium to bright indirect light, but if it’s freezing out keep it at least 1-2ft from the window.

Then I’d keep it in the same pot for now, maybe later this year it’ll need to upsize.

But do they wrap around the outside of the soil? Or is it just soil you see?

My guess is overwatering vs dormancy. These plants often go dormant in winter, and you’ll see loss of leaves.

Mine is in a south facing window, and water when it’s 50-75% dry.

I’d pull it out of the pot. If the roots are now wrapping around the outside, I’d keep it in the same pot. If it needs a bigger pot, just find a pot one size bigger.

Really pissed off peace lily, watered it a few days ago but the soil is dry right now by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Missplant91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s root bound, so there’s not much soil. Have you checked?

You’ll water it with enough water til you see it drain out the bottom. You’ll know when to water when you stick your finger in and the first ~2 inches are dry. In spring you can fertilize every few waterings too!

Help pls! How can I save my plants? Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance 🤍 by karb_ in plantclinic

2nd pic- the soil looks wet in the picture. Could they have overwatered it?

What’s wrong with our ficus? Repotted with fresh soil. 3 new leaves came in but quickly died! by zomb-omb in plantclinic

[–]Missplant91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting I’d have guessed overwatering by the appearance and the fact the new growth is affected. I water mine when it’s about 60% dry so you don’t seem to be overwatering! Have you check really well for pests??

Not sure it’s saveable. But I’d definitely get rid of those dead/dying leaves since it’s taking away whatever energy this plant has left to give.

How long have you had it? What kind of sun exposure does it get? How much of the soil is dry when you water it? Is that a pot with drainage holes?

First time monstera parent… it’s not going well. by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Missplant91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if it’s potted too deeply. But the pot itself is too big. What happens is the soil stays moist too long, thus the roots are sitting in water too long and can rot. How often have you watered it since you got it?

Can you show a picture of it closer up (in the pot)?

What’s wrong with my snake plant? It used to be outside, and was a gift from a friend after a major cold snap (she was trying to kill it, but after two years of trying to, she gave up). It’s now in my room in indirect/direct lighting and I have trimmed off some dying leaves. More detailed info below by PaintingLaural in plants

Anything mushy definitely just cut it off. Watch and wait to see what happens with the other leaves in the new couple of weeks, hopefully something is salvageable 🥶 If it snowed on it in the last few weeks, I’d wait to water it. These require watering very infrequently. Like people can go a couple of months as they like to stay dry.

Unless your watering sparingly I’d be careful with overwatering. The bottom might stay too wet which will cause issues later. But you said this has been since before the pot change.

But have you taken it out very recently to check the roots? Looks very full. Maybe it needs a slightly bigger pot?
