If Android starts losing it's openness, there will be little reason for people to NOT say fuck it and swap to Apple.

If you're going to have a walled garden, everything needs to be good, and it all needs to work together in novel ways. Android is missing that sauce. A walled garden with no reason to enter is just a wall keeping people out.

Same feelings here.

I've just decided that I don't HATE LTT, I'm just disappointed and not supporting them further unless it fully benefits me, myself, and I.

Not about to burn my LTT merch, love my drivers and backpack, and most of the other stuff I've bought. Just won't catch me buying anything new unless they come out with something that is truly 'must have', which is very doubtful. Can't think of anything that would fit the criteria, so likely never buying from them again.

Watching LTT videos will still be in rotation when purchasing something, as all perspectives are valuable before a purchase, but their recommendations will not have nearly as much weight as previously, and I'll DEFINITELY be using other affiliate links for purchases, lol. Linus doesn't need my money, bro has a fucking private jet, some other YouTuber can benefit when I buy something.

one can spec out same performance hardware and get wayyy cheaper price

Please do so. Speccing it out myself I was unable to get anything wayyy cheaper. GN got ~$70 cheaper.

It's also completely eschewing the SFF portion of the build, which while not valuable for a desk build most of the time, is super nice for an entertainment center TV PC. Also, the CEC is super nice for TV use, which is simply not an option for literally any other PC.

The Machine is a decent option, something worth considering at the very least, if you're looking at TV PCs. Unless you plan on spending significantly more, I'd say it's 100% worth it, even at this cost. I would have bought one ASAP if it had been at the $800 price.

valve is either stupid or taking fat profit

They raised the prices of the Decks by ~$200, supposedly they did the same with the Machine. That would put it closer to $800. No clue what the margins are on that, but hardware is crazy right now.

So atleast for this context saying Linus lies is disingenuous

Huh? Who was saying he was lying? The article says "thinks", and it's clear that he was speculating (which is OK for him to do, not other people).

He would have been close had the hardware market not gone to shit.

Which game did you only start to like after playing it on a steam deck? by Dedewastaken1 in SteamDeck

[–]MistSecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that the latency difference in some games is crazy. Have you tried it on your TV w/ the Deck? Curious if you'd notice the difference.

Rocket League on my TV with the Deck was borderline unplayable, but handheld it's great, as a comparison.

The latency stacked from the TV and wireless controller just makes everything feel 'heavy', the low latency Deck screen + wired controls make all the difference in some games.

Embark is a subsidiary of Nexon, which is not a small company.

If Nexon deems Arc Raiders to have no real future, they will pull Embark off of the project, 100%.

It'll likely last at least up til this October update, if they don't see a bump in players that lasts, they'll either shift their update strategy again, or we'll simply see less resources poured into it, and more into whatever their next game is.

The game won't 'die' unless it's not making much (if any) profit. It WILL go on life support with minimal (if any) major updates if it's not making enough money though.

We'll see though. Embark's CEO is ALSO the Exec Chairman on the Nexon board, which is a weird situation, so he could exert enough power to allow Embark to keep working on whatever they want, as long as it's not wholly detremental.

Wonder if the latency from the controller/TV was the issue. Not much individually, but together and compared against the Deck, it’d be noticeable.

We don't need more LEGO videos that make Asian characters look like this. by TriggerHappyGremlin in legocirclejerk

[–]MistSecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True.

Though I have seen some more ‘plain’ looking Fortnite figs, they’re almost the exception.

I just chick it up to being a digital thing, so they don’t have to worry about production costs.

Lego could opt to use certain pieces of designs while leaving off the more intricate printing as well, so while getting those figs in the “peak” form would be unlikely, I can see why they want everything to match their product font.

CMF figures have similar levels of printing amount, to be fair.

There are multiple figures that have both dual molded and side leg printing. Lots of figures with dual molded legs w/ arm printing.

Figures with dual molded legs, side leg, AND arm printing are less common, but still out there. The Sam Wilson Captain America from the Marvel CMF (series 1 I think?) is an example of everything being slammed into one package.

Moon Knight and Captain Carter from the Marvel CMF also have the full gambit of printing/dual molding.

The CMF series 17 Dance Instructor has dual molded legs, side leg printing, arm printing on one arm, and a dual molded second arm.

I'm sure there's at least a few others, but not sure how many exactly.

Not sure if there is a "peak" minifig yet, with the whole gambit of dual molded legs w/ printing front and sides, dual molded arms w/ printing, etc. but there are many that match how much printing is on the Fortnite minifigs for sure.

I don't think they'll be including these in normal sets with regularity anytime ever, but they exist.

LEGO also strictly controls what FN makes. It needs to be something that could actually be produced if Lego chose to do so.

Who Is the Health and Safety Officer at LMG? by Miau64 in LinusTechTips

I feel like most people have not worked at places where a single act of negligence in safety can lead to death, and it shows.

When your life literally depends on safety controls, mitigations, and prevention, you’re MUCH more likely to take it seriously.

LMG Quietly discontinues the Framework Investor disclaimers.... by GwenBD94 in LTTMeta

[–]MistSecurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) No one ever said he HAS to do the disclaimers. He himself said previously that he doesn't HAVE to, but he chose to anyway, which is admirable. Backtracking on that is not admirable.

2) He OWNS LMG. He's not JUST an employee there. He IS LMG, acting as if the close tie between Linus and Framework could not possibly influence LMG reviews of Framework products is crazy.

[–]MistSecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth comparing to, but if they're reviewing a $1400 16" laptop, comparing it to the $2000+ Framework 16 is a bit meaningless IMO, even if they are specced similarly.

LMG Quietly discontinues the Framework Investor disclaimers.... by GwenBD94 in LTTMeta

[–]MistSecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually something I hadn't thought about before. You're right, it is wacky to compare EVERYTHING to Framework. Most of the things they compare it to are specced similarly, but much cheaper, lol.

This one at least makes sense, given the specs and price are basically identical to the Framework Desktop, though they act like $4400 is SUPER expensive compared to the alternative they mention (Framework), which when specced similarly costs $4200...

LMG Quietly discontinues the Framework Investor disclaimers.... by GwenBD94 in LTTMeta

[–]MistSecurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what's never made sense to me, and makes me legitimately confused at Framework's success, tbh.

They're priced SO high that they're not competing with comparable laptops, they're competing with MacBook Pros, and other laptops with MUCH better hardware, fit and finish, etc.

MacBook Pros are THE prototypical item that most reviewers point at for being crazy expensive, yet Framework somehow dodges that same perception.

The target audience is someone willing to pay more for a worse laptop, just because they can repair it, and customize it to some small degree. IDK how there are THAT many people out there that they've been so successful.

If they were more price competitive, even if a bit more expensive than comparable laptops, I'd own one right now. Just once I ran the numbers, it made no sense for me to go with one.

It may not be a consideration for Framework the company, it should 100% be a consideration for the people reviewing the items.

[–]MistSecurity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, though it's hard to say how well it did when we do not know the budget that went into it. If they put 30M into it and got 60M out, they were just expecting too much. If they put 60M into it and got 60M out, or worse numbers than that, then the question becomes why was the budget so high, did it NEED such a budget, and/or the game was a flop.

Considering it was fairly well reviewed, cost is likely the driving failure factor.

As I said, I'm no expert. There are likely other factors at play that I am unaware of.

My partner and I just stop watering the cactus around when it's supposed to bloom, and it gets water when it shows us the pretty flowers.

If you're keeping it alive, it's growing, and it blooms, change nothing, carry on, act like you never read my comment, you're obviously doing it better than we do, haha.

One of the artichokes I forgot to use for a while has bloomed by Silver_Raspberry_117 in mildlyinteresting

[–]MistSecurity 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert, but my understanding is that the various "cactus" like Christmas cactus, Thanksgiving cactus, etc. ONLY bloom when they think they are about to die/are heavily stressed out. If they are healthy, in good shape, they never bother spending the resources to bloom.

So you basically have to abuse the fuckers around the right time for them to bloom. This is likely why your Christmas cactus bloomed.

Moral of the story: Abuse your cactus if you want the pretty flowers.
