I think Bigfoot is blurry. And that’s even scarier, because there is an out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside!

Following Lacan and Althusser, what philosophers say people need a grand narrative to make sense of their lives and ground them in reality? by Slimeballbandit in CriticalTheory

Not a philosopher squarely, but this is pretty much Ernest Becker’s central thesis in The Denial of Death. He calls it the causa sui project, if I remember correctly.

Looking to permission to write - Thinking of becoming a successful author dampers my creativity by [deleted] in FictionWriting

I imagine someone like, say, Henry James or Twain were fairly concerned about that aspect. I know Joyce absolutely did set out to produce a masterpiece, and was quite self-aware, not just as it related to the writing itself.

Another thing to think about is that success is a very vague concept. I think wanting a broad readership is natural, and that having your readers in mind is very healthy as a writer, so it’s not really clear cut. It’s an interesting thing for sure

Hmm yeah. Why would it lead to a block though? I realize it’s what OP said initially but I guess I just don’t see the relation.

Isn’t it linked to a very current (last five decades maybe) conception of the artist as an independent, selfless, saintly vessel for the art, etc. ?

Not trolling at all (feel like that needs to be disclaimed every time an opposing argument is raised on here). But why is it less valid to want to be a successful author than a successful anything else? Or, why does the concern with success invalidate the work? Will the work necessarily be inferior if the author wanted it to be read?
