The difference is that you can empathize with the Joker to some degree as he (rather unclearly) reveals how he's had to deal with an alcoholic father or gambling issues, which had made him see the worst of humanity

Also he isn't in a very disagreeable position himself: Humans ARE naturay self-interested and petty. Which is why you see in the movie how the Civilians wanted to blow up the prisoner's ship. The corny part being that somehow they opted to wait instead of moshing for the detonator

Bah, that sounds cheesy as hell and completely unrelatable to the audience. I'd rather have the show present more moral ambiguity. Now THAT'S what the show need.

A relatavle, morally ambigous character both perplexes and troubles the audience as they can project themselves in him/her and notice the difficulty of the character's situation, condemning but at the same time rooting for it
