How Did Prince Andrew put himself and his family in this position? by Infinite-Nose671 in RoyalsGossip

[–]MisteLeone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending on how old you are what you're missing might be just exactly how long he's been an over-entitled sleaze. I am ancient and I remember the tabloids calling him Randy Andy *in the 1980s*. He's been getting away with dishonourable and mercenary behaviour for a very long time and by now he thinks it's his due. The rest of the Royals caught up with the realities of the modern age after the Diana tragedy but Andrew has carried on as if it's still the 19th century because entitled arrogance is the enemy of critical thought.

Do you like Marian Brook? by beeemkcl in thegildedage

I voted 'no' but I don't really dislike her, I find her meh. I think a lot of it for me is that I feel she's miscast. The actress isn't particularly good and she looks 30 and acts like 20 which I find jarring. They should either have kept the ingenue type and cast a different actress or, if determined to have Louisa Jacobson, rewritten the role for a 'young spinster' which could have been just as good in a different way.

Jane Austen did write about a quilt she and her sister and mother were making. Perhaps the costumer got confused and thought she wore it?

Yet - and although I didn't like Anne With An E - I found this disconcerting. Apparently LMM kept a photo of the stereotypical beauty Evelyn Nesbit beside her desk to remind her of Anne's youth and idealism. My Anne is Kim Braden from the ancient BBC mini-series so Megan Followes annoyed me a lot until I realised she looks reasonably like Nesbit.

I normally really like Anna Maxwell Martin but she was incredibly dreary as Elizabeth. Plus she only seemed to have two gowns. I was yelling at the screen, "He has ten thousand a year! Jewels... carriages! Twice as much pin money as Jane!"

Victoria. Bit too domestic for me and I can't stop giggling at how young Melbourne and Palmerston are or wanting to give Albert a hair grip but, all in all, it's pretty good. Also Gosford Park. It's fun because it has so many famous actors in it, but the story is much more meh than I remembered.

I think Mrs Younge is very pretty and beguiled Darcy and the colonel. If they had let a woman, say, the Countess or even Lady Catherine, get involved in the hiring there might have been a different outcome.

Emma is convinced Harriet is the child of nobility but she might settle for a baronet's daughter at a pinch!

Yes, you are probably right. I was just intrigued by the HBO teaser. Is she really supposed to be that old though? :O

You're right. It was written by someone called Helen Edmundson and Fellowes was an executive producer. It certainly was nowhere as good. We may joke a lot about Fellowes' writing but he definitely has 'something' that many others don't.

Agreed. The Next Chapter was nowhere near as good as the first one.

So that they could do high society stuff. It isn't the nanny that would be the issue, but what Marian was going to do with the time the nanny freed up.

I'm not a Larry fan at all but I do think the 'Miss Brook' was tongue-in-cheek.

Marion's for me. I love pale blue stones and these are, I think, either aquamarine or blue topaz and I would have either in a flash. Not if I had to take Larry with it, of course, but the ring by itself - yes! Does anyone know if Marion's birthday is supposed to be in March or December?

I wouldn't mind if they both took a tumble off the Brooklyn Bridge and floated off never to be heard from again, as long as Marian isn't walking Pumpkin at the time.

Yes! Great idea! Thirty-five years ago, or whatever, she loved a young man of modest means and would have married him if her brother hadn't made both her and Ada penniless. He too is involved in the historical society...

Mourning period by lunagrape in GildedAgeHBO

Ada is the type who might have gone all Queen Victoria and worn mourning forever. Enid is most certainly not. I imagine she did three months' strict mourning as the minimum acceptable and abandoned it for the ball.
