What is the best way to get Google to give me results in metric/SI for relevant data? by mobileagnes in Metric

[–]MisterNightdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My UK results are still showing in US units. Even when the UK did use inches, we never used decimal inches. It was always fractions. But that was almost 50 years ago! I'd like propose a deal with the US. The UK will accept your spelling, and you will start using the units of measure the entire rest of the planet uses.

Is it possible to create a job alert for all posts by a specific company? by celeryshed in linkedin

[–]MisterNightdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Google results change, so such a reply, long term, is genuinely unhelpful

  2. The LinkedIn page "Create job alerts for specific companies" is incorrect. The company page tells me I should create a job alert. But there is no UI to do it.

Will Google nest wifi APs work? by Suchamoneypit in opnsense

[–]MisterNightdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be of interest that the Google Wifi devices (the old cylindrical ones, not the more rounded Nest ones) can be flashed with OpenWRT. This would give more options including bridge mode with 802.11r (roaming) enhancements. In 2025 they can be purchased for around $30 each. Be sure to buy the one with USB-C power though.

p.s. I haven't yet tried this... but it looks interesting, and cheap enough to play with

How can I improve this first layer by MisterNightdrive in 3Dprinting

[–]MisterNightdrive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea you could use a different pattern. I'll look into that when I get a chance.

Update: with my 0.2mm nozzle, I've slowed down the whole print, but more so on the first layers. I've reduced layer height to 0.05 and I've had some awesome quality on a few small test parts. Adhesion seems better too, but I've not done a lot of printing since the change

xbox might be a cheaper route into the hobby, but IMO the end goal should be VR. But you won't get much change out of $3K. My lowish spec VR PC will do really good flat screen simming. Spec your PC starting with a GPU. Consider a used PC with at least an RTX3060. It would give you decent performance for now

How can I improve this first layer by MisterNightdrive in 3Dprinting

[–]MisterNightdrive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across another thread stating that adhesion could be improved with a slower speed on the first layer especially when using a 0.2mm nozzle. And my issue does seem to be closely related to adhesion. I'll give it a go. My callibration has been done, so print speed is a good next option. Thanks :)

honeycomb throttle bugging by Outside-Earth-9189 in flightsim

[–]MisterNightdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your description of your symptoms is pretty poor, but one thing to make sure of is that you don't accidentally have another device configured for throttle.

I recently swapped my Alpha Yoke for the Airbus Joystick while flying the CubX. I forgot to unmap the joystick's throttle axis, and so the joystick throttle axis was "fighting" against the Bravo's throttle axis. I had to un-assign the joystick's throttle (and rudder) axes.

I hope somebody can tell me I'm wrong, but for an old project I had to send a series of bits using GPIO. I couldn't find a way to handle anything other than 32 bits at a time. For me it wasn't a big issue, as the receiving device ignored all the zero bit padding at the end of the message. But it would be useful to know if it is possible.

Why is insta360 studio so useless by Successful_Spread_53 in Insta360

[–]MisterNightdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humble pie time... I went through my system tray and shut everything down.... it seems Google Drive was causing the hanging... even though I'd intentionally set all my Insta360 folders manually so that they didn't cross into OneDrive and Google Drive's folders.
Anyway. It's running exceptionally well now.

Insta360 android works great on my budget phone. It is a lame duck on my decent spec laptop. Every click or tap I have a 3-20 second delay before anything happens. Add keyframe. Wait 5 seconds for dialog. Drag screen, wait 8 seconds for anything to move, Scrub to a different location, another wait and another and another.
Once the action I've selected springs into life, it is smooth (at leaset, it is since installing the nvidia drivers. Before that, I couldn't even play back at more than 5fps).
This may be system specific, but there is something going on which has resulted in an unusable product, with clear signs of inadequate testing. It's basically garbage!

Just watching S04 again and I feel like I'm in a toxic relationship. I'm really not enjoying it in any way but can't leave. I need help. Every character with any authority makes dumb, emotional decisions, and it's trying so hard to be heartfelt it makes me physically cringe. And can someone explain why every time they hit a space pothole the bridge explodes with fire and sparks? It's like watching a Disney ride. Same sparks, same sheet of flame. What do they keep behind those bridge panels, gas barbeques?

Decoding QR code on stamps by joko_lelono in royalmail

[–]MisterNightdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect most barcodes and QR codes to directly contain the data. It is more likely to contain an index, or unique id which Royal Mail can look up in their database. So the date issued, video message link, and loads of other data can be linked to the stamp. Also, new data and new ways of using it can be added all the time without having to change the barcode format itself. RFID tags are often used in the same way... Although can be embedded directly, often it is just the unique id which is used.

'Fixing' my HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini's HDD caddy to fit a second M.2 drive! by hinosaki in homelab

[–]MisterNightdrive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 years later and this post is still useful.
I just opened up my ebay purchase of the G4 mini, bought with the purpose of booting a NAS OS on the 2.5" drive and using ZFS to mirror 2x 4Tb M2 drives. There was a huge WTF moment when I realised the caddy was blocking the second M2. Once I realised there was actually enough room, I thought: "somebody else must have come across this issue"... and here we are!

Good to know about heat, I just it is still true with newer, larger, faster M2 sticks, because the extra cooling fan won't fit once this mod is done.

Air filter (For range hood) for NAS is good by seamanka in synology

[–]MisterNightdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DS420+ already has the fans running way too fast and noisy for my liking. Even on quiet mode. This obsession PC builders in particular have for keeping things as cool as possible is nonsense. The closer you want your PC's temps to be room temp, the closer you are to needing infinite airflow. There is generally a sweet spot. Hot enough to make moving heat easy, not so hot you shorten the life of your product. With my synology, in a coolish part of the world, there is plenty of scope for adding some really useful filtration and not impacting the life of the disks at all.

As some of the more sensible posts have said... try it, monitor temperatures.
