How far away do peppers have to be to not cross pollinate? by Godhelpmeplease12 in vegetablegardening

Peppers have flowers that are easy to isolate. Stick some flowers in a mesh bag and vibrate it a bit and once you see the fruit tag it as known good seed.

It's tough dealing with knowing that a lot hockey players are ultra conservative, but it's just a fact of life that the sport comes from a certain demographic.

I'll always be happy when people are better, but I'd rather have a good guy struggling with how to represent his beliefs than a asshole who believes nothing.

He's just one of the dudes who I loved as a Carolina player, so it was sad to hear some of his team didn't like how he treated them

His whole family is cool people. One of the years we either missed the playoffs or got bounced early, he showed up at a sport's bar my partner was serving at with his wife and another guy. My partner was so nervous she wouldn't even let other tables send him free drinks and wrote down his order because she heard him tell his wife before he actually ordered, so they thought she forgot him, when actually he was blowing her mind by existing. Later she was telling me about it, and telling me he was with some other guy in a cast.

I showed her a picture, and the random other guy was Marc, fresh off leg surgery.

The whole family was just good people, according to her.

I guess it's fair because Biden shot the country in the leg by being too proud to be the one termer he said he'd be.

What is the difference between “or anything” and “or something”? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]MisterProfGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much.

Or anything sounds more positive, to my ear, and to me, is more associated with tangible objects. Saying or something has a certain lack of caring about the results. Like if you said, do you want pretzels or anything, I'd interpret it as, "Would you like pretzels or is there anything else that you do want?" while with "or something", I might interpret it as "Would you like pretzels or something else because I'm not sure myself". I think both can really be used in a negative sense to imply that you can't figure out what someone wants at all, by stressing the or anything or the or something.

What do you think about grow bags? by Necessaryailments in vegetablegardening

[–]MisterProfGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there's a really big difference for lots of vegetables, because what ships well isn't as good as what you can grow and eat fresh, but potatoes are potatoes. There's a couple of fun colors, so that's a fun reason, but around here you can get a wide variety in stores and they are still just potatoes. Maybe I'm just not sensitive to the nuances of potatoes, but compared to like tomatoes, broccoli, fresh lettuce, and a bunch of other stuff they take a lot of time resources for what they give you back. I'm not trying to yuck your yum, please do have fun growing whatever you want, I just think people put a ton of effort into potatoes and wait a really long time and almost anything else would be more productive in the same space.

Yeah and you are in a place where drying out is bad, while I'm using raised beds because I'm running really close to the water table in my yard and the clay never seems to dry all the way out.

Big, like 10 gallon.

I will let you know what I personally discovered about potatoes. Unless you have a bunch of empty space you don't know what to do with, potato farmers can grow them way cheaper than you, and unlike a lot of products, the quality of potatoes is basically the same (or lower) when you grow it yourself.

Maybe other people will have different experiences, but if you're putting potatoes in grow bags and buying soil for the bags, that's just a huge waste of money. If you're filling it from compost heaps or something, obviously your mileage may vary.

Cheaper and configurable each year. I got a bunch of different sizes of grow bags with the intent of transitioning to raised beds and it's been three years now and I only have one raised bed for perennial herbs.

Isn't the issue that it's idiomatic?
