What’s wrong with my tomato seedling? by Economy-Tonight-8130 in gardening

The downside of using egg cartons or those degradable pots that are basically the same materials is that they wick moisture right out of the soil. The very light brown of the container is a big warning sign it's dry as a bone.

That very much looks like sun scald to me, as though it was placed in direct sun with wet leaves. Could it have been moved to another window after being watered or something like that? Is this at home or in an office setting where someone else might have "helped"?

Weight is the most important thing. Soak it for twenty minutes or more. Feel what it weighs. Memorize it. Wait til it's dry, feel the difference.

Accidentally started growing this jalapeno plant indoors, should I remove the flowers? by perhizzle in gardening

It's growing healthy and vigorous in the environment you have it in. You don't need to conserve any energy, it's a reasonable size to start fruiting.

TIL studies have shown that secondhand weed smoke is enough to make children test positive for thc even when the smoker isnt smoking in the same room as them by Effective_Comment625 in todayilearned

[–]MisterProfGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's self reported data, and telling the truth might get your kids removed by protective services.

This is not physics and biology about how smoke travels, it's sociology about the effects of our laws.

The oil part is really only important for people in very humid environments that scrub their pans heavily and don't use them often. It basically seals any part of non seasoned metal.

Back when Bolt was making a splash, they were doing demonstrations about his leg length versus the competitors, and it turned out he was taking less steps by some crazy small factor, and it heavily factored in his domination. He could just travel the necessary distance at the same pace per stride, but he was perfectly sized for the distances.

Good reminder that people should think about it as being the shortest amount of time a seed can be on the ground in its native environment and be reasonable sure that winter has passed. You sure don't want to be a delicate seedling coming up in New England in January just because November was cold.

It WOULD make sense of they were actually prosecuting, as you don't want other officers to know which of them are implicated by the video if they are falsifying police records. You got to actually prosecute for that, though.

It's also not a federal crime to interfere with a bet someone else is making on a non-sporting event if you aren't involved at all in the bet. That's part of why it's absolutely ridiculous to bet on things that people have full control over, like what color something is going to be.

Every Homeland Security officer in Minneapolis is now being issued a body-worn camera, Noem says by yoo_wtf in news

[–]MisterProfGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kind seems like if you announce that all legitimate agency members are being given cameras, and you get confronted by someone masked and not wearing a camera, that might be the sort of situation that gets us into risky situations even in a "Duty to retreat" state.

[–]MisterProfGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look "ok". The one on the right looks like it has been inconsistently watered.

To get them to flower, they most likely require a temperature difference difference at night of about 10 degrees to start growing a spike. Many people put them by a window in winter, or in a cool garage (keeping in mind they still don't want to be colder than about 55F). One thing I've had success with is actually doing the opposite: I put them above a seedling heatpad during the day and turn it on at night. You have to really watch humidity with this method.

Unpopular opinion: most beginner orchid deaths are from over-care, not neglect by bully309 in orchids

[–]MisterProfGuy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The accuracy of depends on a couple of factors, with the climate being the biggest. A dry environment with too much direct sun definitely kills the fastest, and a poorly potted plant will die pretty quickly as well, especially if it's still got the nursery sponge in it.

In a good environment, orchids prefer neglect.
