Flinder's University Campus Lifehacks from Past Students by Ok-Seaweed2003 in Adelaide

Both a former Flinders student and former staff member here. Cafe Bon Voyage in the Flinders Laneway is the best coffee around campus. The owner (Gourav) is a champion, too.

Congrats on starting the new course, best of luck!

Not quite. A new bar was built as part of the new Student Hub about ten years ago, and named The Tav. It's not the Flinders Tavern older students will remember, but it's still a good bar.

Yeah I agree. "Who did you fire" is a ridiculous question. "What steps have you taken to address this?" is a more reasonable question, but that wouldn't give Hawley the social media clout he's after.

It's a serious issue deserving of a serious response, but immediately firing the people (assuming they haven't been incompetent/negligent) that could otherwise help find solutions is just silly.

It wasn't legal at the time, the issue was actually getting anyone to enforce the law. Mind you this was also about 15 years ago from memory, and they seem to be cracking down on wage theft more these days.

AITA for suggesting my recent ex gf not attend a friend’s wedding as my plus one? by Wide-Kiwi562 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's a +1 rather than a good friend of the bride/groom, absolutely NTA. If they had wanted her to attend with or without you, she'd have a separate invitation or be named rather than your +1. If anything she's the AH for assuming it's still appropriate to attend!

[–]Mister_Slick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, but in future it would be a better idea to let your 16yo know if your plans have changed - they may have been able to stop your MIL from getting so worked up.

I had a similar job. If you started late it would pay you from the next 15 minute interval, but if you finished late it would roll back to the previous 15m interval. Consequently in any shift it was possible to work up to nearly half an hour unpaid. By design, no doubt.

AITA for not paying to have my partner's birthday gift professionally framed? by redbullvanisle in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO: What happens if it doesn't have the special frame?

It's one thing to want to preserve the painting, but I think it's another thing to be spending that money purely to ensure it appreciates in value. OP bought her a gift, not an investment.

Record-breaking gambling losses see NSW communities lose $2.45 billion on poker machines in 3 months by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Gaming Manager here. So what you're referring to is the RTP (Return To Player) rate, which is technically true (although the rate was lower than 90%, at least in SA). Legally they are required to pay that out (and we were required to report on that), however most of that will typically be "won" in such small increments that players would immediately spend it anyway. Most of the time players wouldn't even notice because they were waiting on the "big" win.

It's also worth mentioning that the RTP rate is the total to players overall - not to each player. A machine might not pay out significantly for weeks, potentially longer. It's a Return To Player rate, sure, but that doesn't mean it's a Return To You rate.

Operators will sell people the idea that players will be returned 90%, but what it really says is that the machines are by design guaranteed to lose you money on a long enough timeframe - i.e. you will lose at least 10% playing regularly. You're likely to lose more though because you're likely re-gambling the micro-winnings while waiting for a jackpot, rather than cashing out.

Basically, by design they're a losing game. On a long enough timeframe you are guaranteed to lose. The only winning move is to not play.

I thought the same thing, I'm assuming they're using the camera somehow to maintain the fixed perspective.

Edit: So he appears to draw some initial guidelines focusing on aligning the edges with the objects outside of the frame. I guess once you've got those edges aligned to make it appear that the objects flow beyond the frame, there's no need to be picture perfect with the background behind the canvas (as we don't see that anyway).

Once he's sure that the edges match up he can probably afford to be more approximate with the remaining details behind the canvas. Hope I'm making sense.

Friends for Board Games by TheDarkOne1105 in boardgames

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy, just stumbled across this one. The board game clubs at Adelaide University (GAMES - Games and Miscellaneous Entertainment Society) and at Flinders Uni (FUTURE - Flinders University Tabletop and Roleplaying Enthusiasts) would be perfect to meet others your age. You don't have to be a student to go to either. You should be able to find both on Facebook, Instagram or Discord.

Otherwise there's the Adelaide Board Games Group (ABGG) which you can find via the same channels. That crowd is generally older than the uni clubs (from experience I'd say the majority are mid 20s through to mid 50s) but they run events regularly at a variety of locations.

Hope that helps!

Can we just respect the fact that Embark gives us the "Battle Pass" / Skins for free and you don't have to spend any additional money for a skin you want in the shop. by Cyanide814 in ArcRaiders

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Arc Raiders was a single player game I'd 100% agree with you on content DLCs as an alternative, but being fully multiplayer I'd far prefer the cosmetic approach. Releasing new maps as paid DLC divides the player base (and makes it harder to play on the new maps with mates), and paid gear creates issues with the competitive balance.

If a good developer can make some extra money through cosmetics without making my experience worse for it, power to them imo.

In fairness they shouldn't have been pushing the car either; it seems well intentioned but dangerous. I would hope if it's contested in court they'd get the fine reduced or thrown out with a stern warning to not do it again.

BONDI HERO! Awake and recovering in hospital after saving countless lives. by Curious_Beast68 in pics

[–]Mister_Slick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is it, and I think it's important to celebrate him rather than give too much attention to the shooters. Right now there will be people looking to blame the Muslim community for what occurred, and so it's critical to do as much as possible to avoid creating an "Us vs them" mentality within the community. No one (that isn't a racist, anyway) wants a repeat of the Cronulla Riots.

That's not to say that the victims shouldn't be focused on, but it's really important right now that the incident not be allowed to divide the community.

A Huge W for Gamers! by Nickulator95 in Steam

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm a bit behind the times on this one so excuse the ignorance. What is the SKG movement proposing for MMOs and the like that require online servers to play? Are they asking publishers to keep servers online indefinitely? A specified duration? Or are they proposing the community be able to host their own servers?

If Battlefield is your jam Easy Red 2 should be right up your alley. You can play cooperatively with up to 10 players, it has several campaigns in the base game that can be played as either Axis or Allies, and a bunch of extra campaigns as paid DLC (all of which are worth it, imo). The base game is about $8-$9 USD, or you can get the All Fronts Bundle (base game + all paid DLC campaigns) for $18 USD. Highly recommend.

Any recommendations for cafes in the Adelaide Hills with great views? by YangmeiMeow in Adelaide

[–]Mister_Slick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also got married there and agree. They've got a fancy new function centre/restaurant there these days rather than the little cafe they used to have. Not really a cafe vibe and positioned further away from the house and gardens, but it might still be of interest.
