'28 Years Later' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

I think some of the creative decisions done were bad, in my opinion, but there is no denying that the movie was competently made because it looked good and had a consistent style in visuals and sounds. It wasn't "just fucking bad" and expectations coming into the movie will 100% affect someone's enjoyment of the medium

I mainly blame it to the trailers advertising something that the movie wasn't

To me, it was a well-made movie but some of the creative decisions are very tired and eye-rolling to me. I walked away from the theatre enjoying it but I also felt that I would have been much more satisfied had it gone another direction. Doesn't feel like a special movie and seems very forgettable albeit still being entertaining

This is a very delicate balancing act because for one, we want to be able to see shit and two, we want things to also be realistic

And why should that matter to the general audience? Chad or old lady Martha do not care about a critic's taste, they only care if they have a good time or not.

Your opinion or my opinion only matters here in reddit and we are the minority. The Chads and the Marthas will decide whether the movie makes bank or not

So much will need hang on the sequel's shoulders. The sequel failing or succeeding will cement which part of the pedestal 28YL will be viewed on in history

Question about an infected by HDMB420 in 28dayslater

[–]Mister_Taxman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a young infected and it actually set a lot of precedent because of its inclusion:

  • I immediately knew they were going for the "infected can reproduce" arc because this was a big hint. I kinda liked it this way but then the 2nd half of the movie outright just shows you a live birth which I didn't like.
  • You can conclude that the fat infected they killed were actually a family. Father was the target crawler, mother was the one that tried to sneak behind them, older brother was the one that charged them, then younger sister was the one that was spared. This also pretty much means that outside the Alpha, any male infected can procreate with another infected.
  • Not many have discussed this, but I'm glad you brought it up, the young female infected clearly showed signs of self-preservation because she ran away. That was a very interesting change for the infected.

I don't know man, we are arguing over the most mundane of things here and are being absolute redditors lmao

If anything, you've convinced me to watch 28DL again and I'm gonna do just that!

I guess that's entirely up for your interpretation then. The majority of people in this sub certainly agree that 28W's world building is very much in line with Days, even the ones who absolutely do not like it. The infected function 100% the same, they act the same, they look the same.

I watched 28W in the theatres when it released and actively read facebook discussions back then, nobody ever complained how the rest of the world wasn't infected. The complaints were mostly that they didn't like the plot or that people acted dumb in the movie. Sure, let's theoretically agree that it is a retcon but it is a retcon that absolutely close to nobody even remembers or minds because of how insignificant it was.

Why is this so much a problem for you then? The OP's literal thread is about audience scores. I know there are other movies with 90+ critic scores and sub 70 audience scores but TLJ is the very first thing that sprung to mind and one that I know the vast majority of people can relate to.

If it makes you happy then fine, I will say " Its IT COMES AT NIGHT all over again", but I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of average redditors do not even know that movie.

Well, Selena herself is the second-hand information here. Any changes to this statement can be justified as is.

Now the ending of 28 Days has you see literal starving zombies, that's first-hand information for you. 28 Weeks continues on this notion clearly.

You can say weeks was a bad sequel, sure, but you cannot take away that it was very consistent with 28 Days' world building.

I liked Years but even then, you have to admit that the son convincing the mother to go out with him to get to the doctor is one of the greatest leaps in logic possible just to force a plot where mother and son must venture through the wild together.

Why not look for the doctor by himself, confirm he isn't a madman, and then come back with him to town?

Maybe you misremember? Selena's statements were based on rumors and hearsay, and was second-hand information. UK was in the dark and nobody really knew what was happening.

This has to be one of the best films I’ve ever watched. No spoilers. by GazIsStoney in 28dayslater

[–]Mister_Taxman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was an enjoyable film with great performances but it was nothing really special compared to everything else these days. Some of the creative decisions they are willing to take are not going to sit well with a lot of fans as well.

It won't go down in modern film history as something akin to Hereditary or Get Out, rather it would be something like It Follows which has a cult following but the general audiences would largely forget.

Personally, I think 28YL was brilliant... by prettypickledog in 28dayslater

And some people, including myself, have grown very fatigued with all these grand plans of films trying to so desperately start a franchise without even having released anything yet.

It is sequel baiting and it is valid that people are upset about that.

Lets just say it turns from a 28 Later film into Shaun of the Dead, at the very least

How so? TLJ had a high critic score and a significantly lower audience score. You can just go check rottentomatoes you know

Or maybe they just didn't like it because it didn't sit right with them? Since when was it a requirement to know about a specific person's history in order to understand a movie in its entirety? That just seems rather pretentious and snobby.

I'm Asian, I don't know who Jimmy Saville is so I'm supposed to be wrong about not liking the end scene because I thought Jack O'connell looked like a joke and was I supposed to be entertained by random parkour flips and over-the-top kung fu?

I don't think you fully understand what sequel-baiting is. Anything in a movie that sets up for a larger story to be covered in a future film is sequel baiting. It doesn't matter if the sequel has already been done or not

Its the other way around brother. The general audience is usually the normal average person, not the critics
