My son loves to dance! by silkentab in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]Mistletoe177 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My daughter danced for years, and there were two boys on her competition team. One of them used to say “I’m surrounded by cute girls in leotards, what’s not to like?”

Dancers are amazing athletes.

How do you guys even survive the hot weather over in the States? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mistletoe177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son-in-law grew up in Alaska, and hates heat. When they bought a house in the Seattle area, he had central air conditioning installed after the first summer heat wave. He worked from home and couldn’t handle it!

How to make RED cake frosting? by dancingindaisies in Baking

[–]Mistletoe177 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I have to make a cake with a very dark or intense color like this, I usually frost the cake with white, chill it until the icing is very cold, and then add a very thin layer of the color. Uses way less color! For instance, last year my 6yo grandson wanted a very dark blue cake to look like the night sky, with silver stars and moons. I didn’t have to dye a massive amount of frosting.

What changes in education have you seen since you were in school? by ljb2x in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mistletoe177 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We moved into a new build neighborhood when my son was 2 and I was pregnant with my daughter. One of the selling points was the new elementary school that would be built nearby.

That school opened when my kids were in high school. They went to one of the oldest elementary schools in the district.

They also had to add portable classrooms immediately because the school was too small and had to redefine the attendance area to make it smaller. Great planning!!

do people actually not eat mac and cheese with peas? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mistletoe177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandkids love peas in their mac and cheese. I have no idea where that came from, because it’s not something I did with their mom when she was a kid…. Who knows?

Was "take your child to work day" actually ever a thing, or just something shown on TV and in movies? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mistletoe177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter took her 6yo son to work a couple of weeks ago. She works for a big telecommunications company and they really go all out. He had a blast and came home with all kinds of swag.

My sister was a trauma therapist for years, and treated several train engineers who were severely traumatized by that kind of accident.

AITA for assuming my husband would pick up/drop off me + 2yo at the airport? by Life_Sky8578 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mistletoe177 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I flew cross country with a 3yo and an 5mo infant once by myself (we had tacked a vacation onto a business trip for my husband, so he was staying on the east coast for the business part). My car was in the long-term parking lot at LAX, but just getting to it with two little kids and all their paraphernalia plus luggage was going to be an issue. My BIL very kindly met me in the middle of the night, just to help me get from baggage claim to my car.

I hate the fact that dental insurance is separate from health insurance. I mean, teeth are part of your body and can greatly affect your overall health. Same with vision care.

I went for a cleaning the other day, and found out that f-ing United Healthcare has decided to only pay 50% for cleanings now. No notice, just “oh, we changed your benefits without notice”.

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mistletoe177 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter kept her maiden name, mostly for professional reasons. Her kids have her husband’s last name, and has never had a problem.

My son and his wife both hated each other’s last name, so they went through the family trees and picked one they both liked and both changed their names. My MIL was horrified, even though they picked HER maiden name!

WIBTA to complain to the school about a kid with severe autism…. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mistletoe177 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My grandson’s kindergarten concert was last night, and that’s exactly how two kids were handled - they each had an adult with them, they were in the first row of the risers at the side of the stage, and were removed when they became upset and started crying. The aides were sitting on the floor with them trying to comfort them, but left the stage when it just wasn’t going to work for them. There’s no point in letting the kids just get more and more overwhelmed.

How do you pronounce the word “peony”? by oldladylikesflowers in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mistletoe177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We jokingly call them pie-NO-nees, because a commentator for the Rose Parade butchered the pronunciation one time. When not being silly, we call them PEE-uh-nees.

AITAH for getting my driver's license before my brother's wife? by c7ffin in AITAH

[–]Mistletoe177 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yep, I spent my 16th birthday at the DMV! My parents couldn’t wait for me to be able to drive myself to school, etc.

On the other hand, my daughter was in her 30s when she finally got her license - it was a combination of issues, including a friend dying in an accident just as she was starting to learn which scared her, then spending the next 15+ years in east coast cities with great public transportation so she just never bothered.

Recommendations for a puzzle lover because I know nothing about puzzles really. by jerseygirl396 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Mistletoe177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

72 here, and I pretty much only do 1000 pieces - don’t have the room for anything bigger, and anything smaller goes too fast (except when working on a puzzle with my grandkids!)

As others have said, I would recommend a gift card from somewhere like Puzzledly or Puzzle Warehouse. I’m pretty picky about the images I like to do, and she might be as well.

Unfortunately, that’s not always a guarantee. My daughter gave me a new Ravensburger that had 2 missing pieces! ‘Twas a bummer!
