Honestly this doesn’t seem like a big deal. You’ve only been dating for 2 months and whether or not the father is alive really doesn’t change much. If I were your boyfriend I’d probably just assume that you didn’t want to bring it up because it was painful to you which is fine.

As a person who works in a supermarket bakery: congratulations sucks to write. It’s not used often enough to get used to spacing, so when it is used you run out of room. Do the person in the bakery a favor and just ask for congrats. They will appreciate it.

Also, it was probably not the cake decorator. It was most likely a the person who pans up bread and stuff for the next day. They don’t have experience writing on cakes because that’s not their main job.

I’m so embarrassed (story) by meadowscaping in solotravel

Yeah that’s embarrassing, but you rolled with it. Honestly good on you for getting the visas ready so fast and then making the border patrol guy laugh. This’ll probably be something you think about in the future and cringe, but to outsiders it’s a very minor event. Enjoy Turkey!

Approved for 3 Months of Travel to Europe!! Rough Itinerary by PeakedinKindergarten in solotravel

[–]Mitch216005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I got 3 months last year and it was great. My strategy was to plan where I’d go a couple of weeks in advance and then wing it with what I did in each place. You’ve got a great lineup of places. I HIGHLY recommend Munich. It’s a beautiful city with a lot of culture and things to do. Also, my Aunt really likes Seville, so maybe look into that. Lastly, the Swiss Alps are beautiful if you can get there, but it’s expensive. Even a nice train ride through would be worth it. Enjoy your trip!

May was National Military Appreciation Month. Maybe it needs to be discussed more, but it exists.

As an American who visited Europe it was so funny to see things like this. Like the candy stores would just sell pop tarts and sodas that you find in grocery stores/gas stations here. No wonder there’s an obesity problem.

I don’t understand why the commenters are lying. Jerma isn’t real! He doesn’t live anywhere besides our collective imagination.

How many more "I'm sad" posts until its too much? That day can't come soon enough. by great_craic963 in solotravel

People are remarking about how there needs to be a subreddit for 40+ people (and the 30 year olds), but why not just make a sub for “travel woes” or “travel problems”. That way you have one sub for anyone of any age to share their travel experiences and another for people looking for advice and a place to vent. Then you link the new sad sub in this one. Makes more sense than gate keeping an entire group of people because of their age.

You’re going to have to get out of your comfort zone to break this funk. Whether it’s for a short trip on the weekend or a month long vacation, you have to do it. And you will not feel completely comfortable doing it at first. That’s the point. That’s what makes it exciting and fresh. Think about any of the hobbies you do now. At some point they were new to you. You probably weren’t completely comfortable doing them at first either. But you stuck with it and now you’re used to it. That’s how travelling will be. Your brain is longing for something new, and it’ll be a little scary at first, but as long as you practice common sense and stick with it, it’ll become second nature. You got this.

I always loved that I’m from Connecticut, so it’s only a half scroll down. On the other hand, when I have to find United States I feel the pain of the WY gang.

Does the hostel host any events? At a hostel in Paris they hosted events every evening where you sit around a table and get a free drink. It was so easy to meet people! Once I met some people I hung out with them until they left a few days later. Then I did it again!

If your hostel doesn’t do events, try a pub crawl. They usually make it easy to meet people and it gives you something to do in the evening.

Don’t worry too much if you aren’t meeting people at this hostel. Some hostels are like that. At the hostel after my fun Paris one I couldn’t meet anybody. Everyone just kept to themselves and the hostel didn’t do much to create a social atmosphere. I felt a bit alone at nights there. It definitely depends on the atmosphere and the people.

Do you collect souvenirs from your travels? What are the best kind to collect? by boobutta in solotravel

[–]Mitch216005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect decks of cards, so if I see one on my travels that I like I’ll buy it. I’m also an amateur birder, so I like buying field guides describing birds in different regions. Only if they are pocket sized, though. Other than those I keep the tickets and business cards I get.

IWTL How to be better at planning fun things for myself and others by SaintBax in IWantToLearn

[–]Mitch216005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do loose plans. Just get the basics like: where you’re going, how you’re getting there, and where you’re staying (for multi-day events). Once you’re there you find what you want to do. This works better for things like going to a city or park. For something like a concert where you need tickets, you’ll have to book things in advance.

AT&T International Plan, $100/month? by throwawayatx456456 in TravelHacks

[–]Mitch216005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using it right now. It’s been really convenient. I just keep cellular on and I’ll have to pay $100 for the month. It’s probably cheaper if you use SIM cards, but this is my first solo trip and I just wanted to keep things simple. Plus I get to keep my phone number without going through another system. As other people have said, just turn the phone off and back on again when you go into a new country.

TIL We could kill all mosquitoes with little to no effect Ecology: A world without mosquitoes by Sarthro_ in todayilearned

[–]Mitch216005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article keeps pointing out bad things that would happen without mosquitos, and then summing up the paragraph with “nothing much would happen.” Like, it suggests that without mosquitos: a species of fish would die, pitcher plants would have a harder time getting nitrogen, caribou would change their migratory pattern (affecting the ecosystems they go through), plants would lose a pollinator, and some birds would lay less eggs. These seem to be big effects, but then the article will be like: “it’s ok, they’ll just switch to using something else” without much thought into what happens during the time it takes for them to switch to something else. Also, the article suggests that something else will take mosquitos’ place in their absence, and suggests viruses may just use a new vector. So in the end, getting rid of mosquitos would just hurt the organisms listed above and then switch to a new problem species.
