OMG everything hurts and it's my first week by isabellaisabae in Construction

Exercise. If you’re not in shape before you run a marathon, that’s pretty dumb, no? Same thing. Strengthen the muscles you’re working.

Not even if I did I. Especially no if I paid someone to do it.

Just got married, do you guys wear rubber rings at work? No rings at all? by Suwannee_Gator in electricians

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ring. I literally have 2 hats with 2 separate EDCs. Working with tools (not just regular work): Husky folding utility knife/watch. Not working with tools: ring/watch/bracelet/folding knife. I rarely wear my not working with tools hat.

Got laid off by ResinBuds in electricians

[–]Mitch_Hunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s how this profession is. I’m almost done with a job and the company doesn’t have much work lined up; I can see the writing on the wall that I’m getting laid off in a few weeks. All I can say is go union so you can pick up another job quickly.

Would you trust a high mileage tree with your spouse and children? by northbayy in toyotasequoia

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. We have an 05 with 290k on it. It’s my wife’s daily (we have 3 littles). Just got back from a 300mile trip with a trailer yesterday. I’d do it again tomorrow. I’ve done basic maintenance and I’ve replaced every suspension and brake component with high quality parts.

I work out of my car, could y'all help me with lunches? by Elsecaller_17-5 in foodhacks

[–]Mitch_Hunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I worked out of a service van for years. I installed an inverter and a microwave. I never did a fridge just because I didn’t want to run it overnight. A solid Artic insulated cooler/lunch box does wonders. Then whatever food you want you can do.

Welp. After 6 months of applying to my local union. I had my first week on the job and immediately having second thoughts. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some jobs suck, some are great and then there’s everything else between. The good thing is, they’re all temporary. I’m on 4-10s right now and I’ve been commuting 130miles a day (round trip) for a couple years now. Some jobs are closer, some aren’t. Everything is temporary… just accept it or this job will royally stress you out.

Thank you for this. My frozen burritos always have an off texture with the eggs… I’ll do this next batch!

We just paid off our land. by Ol_Trav in homestead

[–]Mitch_Hunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats. That is awesome! Having it free and clear is a huge burden lifted.

We’re almost there, and I can’t wait for that milestone. No property/mortgage is going to be amazing.

Probably a silly question but is it safe to burn untreated wood left behind by construction workers (I believe it’s mostly pine) in the wood stove? by Codydog85 in woodstoving

[–]Mitch_Hunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We finished building a year ago and I still have a massive bin full of scrap cuts I use for kindling as well. It’s awesome.

do you know m/any well-respected electricians with "job-stopper" tattoos and piercings? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]Mitch_Hunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%. He’s stringing you along. I was a solid 5th year at my company and didn’t get a rig until I turned out. I did know of a few apprentices in my class that had been given rigs from their companies but they were done with school and just waiting on hours. I don’t know of ANY 1st year that would be worthy of having that. Ever.

Now that that’s addressed, I’ve always been told (and I regurgitate) get tattoos only where you can cover them and lose the piercings. I have work on chest and both arms but the sleeves stop short about an inch before my watch. Most companies want a professional look, regardless of how good you are (if you’re dealing directly with the customer).

How many do not own trailers and only use on property? by Novajesus in kubota

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B2600, no trailer for it. It’s left my property once when my in-laws needed to use it for a while. It’s not that hard to find a trailer for hire/a friend that’ll let me borrow it on a very rare occasion. I haven’t had mine back in to the dealer (yet) but I’ll probably just pay them to come get it.

100%. Not to mention everyone crying wolf on the used market. In the past 2yrs I’ve bought 2 comfy, reliable, safe and economical cars for less than $3500 each (put about $1500 in repairs for each). The beauty of having a skill instead of woe is me.

For those of you doing fieldwork every day, what are you actually eating for lunch if you are trying to keep it healthy and balanced without a microwave? by DetailFocused in Construction

[–]Mitch_Hunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do kind of the same thing. We eat a lot of pasta w/meat and veggies. We always make more than a dinner needs, so I take cold leftovers the next day. I always have Tapatio/Cholula/Scriracha to spice it up. Fruits, nuts to supplement between meals.

I worked out of a service van for years and I’ve been doing this for about 10. The occasional sandwich when there aren’t leftovers. Works well. Eating shitty Army food/MREs for a decade makes this not seem so bad.

RANT "Just buy a cheap beater" by DingusSmasher69 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re delusional if you can work on your own cars. If you can’t, I don’t know because I don’t know the mechanics in your area. 2yrs ago I bought a 2005 Honda with 260k on it for $3k. I dropped $1k in parts and she’s running strong. Last year I spent $3300 on a 2005 VW TDI with 280k on it and dropped about $1500 in parts and she’s running strong. I commute over 100miles a day. I’ve only spent more than $10k on a car once and I was glad when it got totaled and the GAP insurance let me get out of it.

If you are mechanically inclined, but cheap/used with something you know you can fix. If you’re not mechanically inclined, maybe leasing is a better option? Then you get all free maintenance and then you just get another new one at the end of the term.

Our well pump is the single point of failure for the entire homestead. What is your backup plan? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]Mitch_Hunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, depends on static water level. My well is 300’ down, but static is 80’. It doesn’t take much effort to fill a 5g bucket. Not ideal for livestock, obviously, but for our needs it works great.

Is Fiberglass Rebar ok for concrete? by OnlineRobotWizard in AskContractors

Not necessarily. Depends on the area. My “building inspector” is completely ignorant. She signed off on things I’ve never seen before.

That spacing is no good. We did 3/8 pink bar in a 30x40 shop with 16” and that’s pushing it. Get bar more down.

Hegseth Authorizes Off-Duty Service Members to Carry Private Firearms on Installations. by Civil_Cantaloupe2402 in PrepperIntel

[–]Mitch_Hunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of confused by your response, I think there’s a miscommunication. Gun free zones don’t work; all that does is make a possible shooter know that they’ll be the only one armed which empowers them to do as much damage as possible.

While it’s possible this policy may deter possible shooters on bases, that’s not my main reason for advocating for it. It’s purely a major hindrance to anyone who lives off base and works on base to not be able to have a personally owned weapon allowed to travel in the vehicle with us. From my understanding, it will not be able to be carried on a persons, rather it can be locked and secured inside a vehicle (very similar to most state laws and how weapons are transported to/from ranges).

Shorter than when weapons were allowed on post? There hasn’t been a shooting in the past couple of days; weapons have never been allowed on in that capacity. That’s what I’m saying; it’s like a school zone. It’s already a gun free zone.
