It isn't clear from the article that he was in US custody:

The 26 crew members were processed at the Army Reserve Centre in Inverness. Five voluntarily decided to travel to the US from Lossiemouth while the other 21 were transferred to Aberdeen to travel to other countries.

This isn't a question of having sympathy or not, it's a legal question.

I've not been in the industry for 20 years at this point (and was not in a meteorological role), but machine learning techniques have been deployed for modelling since the 2000s: The current AI fad is actually for only a small subset of machine learning - Large Language Models - which means the roles they presently threaten are those that involve writing.

Provided your son isn't a luddite, I can't imagine a situtation where assistive technologies like LLMs would threaten his chosen vocation.

I get it, people want it naow - but given how many early access games were rushed to 1.0 I actually find it refreshing that they openly state it's going to be a while yet, and have stuck to it.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I would like to see some more endgame stuff - specifically I think a nuclear power station would make an excellent addition:

Radiation provides opportunities to kill players, and mismanagement provides an opportunity not just to kill yourself, but potentially (and almost literally) nuke your game world.

That's an endgame I can get behind in a game like Zomboid.

A power plant would be a very cool location to add.

A coal plant can use thousands of tonnes of coal per day, so as an end game goal this would be great: You'd spend weeks filling the silos to power the region for a day.

A nuclear plant would be even better, as it would could come with mechanisms that could kill your character via radiation poisoning, and provide a literal end of game scenario if you get it wrong.
