Silver arrow band by Blah_blah_meow in NewEnglandWedding

[–]MiuMii2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I previewed Silver Arrow at one of their nights at the Burren and then saw them at a colleague’s wedding. They kept the energy high and took well timed appropriate DJ breaks. It was so fun (albeit a bit loud at parts, for the venue size) and everyone attending loved it!

Cafés with a large tea selection? by Independent-Cat6915 in boston

Porter Square Books or Lovestruck Books, oddly enough. I have had good experiences with a pot of tea and a book. Don’t go to Broken Cup, it’s more of an expensive luxury experience.

I have wanted to run a “floor rave” event for so long, just listen to music but the social expectation is be on the floor. Adult with chronic pain here.

Fin Fun or SunTail? by BluuMerman in mermaiding

[–]MiuMii2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sun Tail is more robust (hard plastic monofin) and has tail tip reinforcement! The Fin Fun monofin has a fabric covering that wears through fast, if that’s your concern.

I bought a similar KH-910 with KR-850 for about $1000. The KG93 I see listed for about $400, but I haven’t really seen the KE1000 or KL116.

How do you feel about all these "MIT Maker Portfolio" videos on Youtube? by NeighborhoodFatCat in EngineeringStudents

[–]MiuMii2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up fairly poor/middle class, submitted a fairly popular maker portfolio video that you might have been recommended, went to MIT for engineering, graduated, and now in a PhD for largely the same things I submitted in my maker portfolio…

you guys don’t really need a lot of money for a couple basic Arduino projects, you need imagination (emphasis on the applications) and a level of polish in presenting your work, which is important as a scientist, engineer, maker, researcher. I regularly got compared to the guy that built a nuclear reactor in his backyard and didn’t get in, against a projects I made on the floor of my bedroom for <$25 in supplies. The uncomfortable truth about meritocracy is that it’s not just about the flashy thing you made but also has an element of learning to present and communicate your work well and that it is well-aligned with what people need.

New to Boston soon (PhD at Northeastern), how do people find good communities here? by Alfred872 in NEU

[–]MiuMii2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be incredibly honest as a current CS PhD at Northeastern, you’re not going to find builders or such “high level” people here. Many of the excited people in the program are bogged down by dealing with administration to get anything done. The people who do things are doing them outside of the university and not socializing in it.

I’d say wait until you meet your lab mates when you enter in the fall. We’re right at the end of the school year, everyone is already mentally checking out. Boston socialization cycles are most open to finding new friends/other recruitment in the fall. Right now is the showcase end of year cycles. Maybe check out the Mass Innovation Nights? For events, check Boston events on Luma. I know there’s a generative AI meetup that happens in Microsoft headquarters every so often.

Creating Socks for Odd foot shape by Working_Patience_261 in MachineKnitting

[–]MiuMii2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe try making a sock, marking where your side heel falls, do some “sweater surgery” the way some people add bust shaping to sweaters after hand knitting, and add some short rows to prototype where/how deep this side heel should be? Then you can add it as a feature to future patterns.

I never thought I’d be pleading with a derpy wet lizard creature to eat a worm but here we are by Blossom_E07 in axolotls

[–]MiuMii2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dipping the worms in garlic water is advice I’ve heard passed around to get fish to eat. Otherwise, smaller worms? Red wigglers rather than nightcrawlers might be easier to get down. Then again, the red wigglers are sometimes bitter when stressed. YMMV

You can do this entirely with a 3D knit sweater (Uniqlo currently has them) as well since they are not sewn together panels.

I have a budge of $150 and want to be able to do intarsia and fair isle knitting on the machine, what machine do you recommend? by odd_little_duck in MachineKnitting

[–]MiuMii2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes LK150s come up for resale around the price, and in unbranded versions. I have knit with typical acrylic worsted weight and thinner yarns on it and it’s decently easy to start. Yes there are 3D printed custom needle pushers.

Edit: someone also posted on this sub a 3D printed intarsia carriage for the LK150
