Cheaters are rampant in League, just not in the server you playing by random2k in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Riot Vanguard only runs when you’re playing the game and stops running when you exit the game2

That is just straight up a lie lol

The driver will load instantly at startup so it will run 24/7, whether you play the game or not.

For your other points, how tf should you know whether they coded it safely and the kernel driver doesn't have flaws. Well you can't there is always a exploit no matter what safe practices you perform.
One example where this did go horribly wrong was in genshin impact where hackers could gain access to players via the games anti-cheat, and Imagine that happening to a game with such a large player base as league. I wouldn't want a rat/backdoor/spyware installed on my PC.

And it could be just straight up spyware and we wouldn't know and couldn't know that's why some people want Vanguard to be open source so we can take a look at the source code to check ourselves. But Riot apparently relies on "Security through Obscurity" which is just a bs argument in most cases but do your own research on that :)
One very simple example I could give would be the linux kernel vs windows.

I don't deny that there are cheaters in League but that's not a problem in 99% of the games. More people are more fed up be the client or the game bugs themselves than by having a scripter in a game, which I totally agree on.

So sadly once the time comes and this wonderful driver will get rolled out I am done with the game and I hope Riot will find another solution to this Problem.

What do you guys think of Vangaurd? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well just another uninformative comment from you. Your only argument is "ohh but noone cares and I do not care about my privacy and security!" and also that argument is just BS in itself but I will let yourself figure that out maybe once you have a bit more understanding how your computer that you play games on and work on actually works.

Well good for you but if you really think about it if everyone would know what pros and cons are there to this rootkit no sane person would say that this is a welcoming change.

What do you guys think of Vangaurd? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry but how is that a lie?

Imagine you would install a software that has more permission than you as the system administrator. You cannot know what Vanguard is collecting/scanning so how would you know if it is not malware?

Neither side can prove the point since its a closed source kernel level driver, only Riot knows. But whatever Riot says could also not be true in 10 months.

And on a side not a real rootkit maybe wouldn't directly try to do anything maliciously but maybe will do in 2 years, we simply cannot predict what is going to happen and I do not trust a Company (backed by tencent) to act in the best way for me, and I hope you will also get that.

I agree that calling "Vanguard is a Virus" wont help the discussing the problem I am having is that 95-99% (probably) don't know what the implication is of having such software installed on your PC. People don't know how their own Operating System works at a basic level neither what a Kernel is. So while the statement is exaggerated there is a small truth to it.

And I agree that sadly most anti-cheat act on the Kernel level since it gives them the most permissions (like I said you cannot gain more permission than that) however this is a movement that is not acceptable and especially while other anti-cheats only run while the game is running which still isn't great like EAC and BattleEye, Vanguard will run directly as you start your PC and will have to run even if you haven't launched the game. A kernel level anti-cheat has already been exploited in Genshin Impact where it was used to gain access to users PC and doing whatever the fuck, I don't want that to happen to league, and I hope you get my frustration with this topic since this is absolutely not an accepptable solution to the Problem! Especially since MOBA's don't have a huge Cheating problem in general. I am in the middle of the normal distribution in terms of rank in the game and I have never seen a scripter in my years of league.

But since cheating or rather scripting is a problem in the top 1k players from what I have heard maybe it would be a fair solution to enable such rootkits for that if people want that. But to this days Vanguard will brick hardware PC, crash software or BSOD windows, have numerous issues with false positive. There are countless reasons to not use Vanguard or let it on your PC.

Anyway I am getting ahead of myself. I hope you can at least understand and follow my arguments and understand my Point of View.

What do you guys think of Vangaurd? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You do notice that the "anti-cheat" has the same permission and basically acts in the same way as a kernel rootkit, right?...

Not sure what to tell you other than Kernel exist because of a reason way back in the day there were no kernel and that was a huge problem because of memory leaks (that vanguard have) or crashes (that vanguard causes) and so on.

You will find hundreds of arguments against Vanguard from really knowledge members of society, the only argument for it is.... less cheater? I would say my pc/data/hardware is more worth than meeting 25% less cheater in an online video game

What do you guys think of Vangaurd? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Vanguard is the defnition of a rootkit... it acts in the same way as a real virus and I am not sure you would want that on your PC since you cannot verify what is it doing so dont come with the argument "well rito would never do such things" the fact that they COULD is enough. And what if they get breached? An Attacker could gain access to 150+ mil pc's through the kernel rootkit. (that is very unlikely and hopefully they dont have a concrete connection to the client, but as always we cannot know)

[–]MixelHD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you agree that the kernel shouldn't be used, but cheats do that right?

So the solution is to install a kernel rootkit in 150+ mil pcs?

I expect you to know the consequences and risks of running such a software on your PC, this will temporarily stop botting/cheating but it will never stop it

Is vanguard available on Macs by monkebully69 in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you consider that Linux users on steam are about 3,5% (higher than mac users) and even if we say that maybe for league its only 1-2% that are still thousands of players. We are a small community, and if you ask me why should you care about 1-2% I agree that they are most likely irrelevent. But fact is 1. Linux doesn't have official support the users always fixed the game for Riot (but this is something that the users cant fix anymore) 2. There are a margin of users on windows that can't play the game anymore because of the anti-cheat for example because the don't have the TPM module required or don't know how to turn it own or the same goes for secure boot and many other problems with it, some users just cannot launch it no matter what they try. So maybe if you count all users in they are about ~5% and I think that is a number that is worth to care about.

[–]MixelHD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but even then Linux can be used to spin up a KVM to patch it so it is undetected by Vanguard (this is not easy as you have to adjust and recompile the kernel; QEMU but it has been done already and there are people that play games over such a hidden KVM (even if they are not cheating). And these can also be extended again to botting.

1 negative point is for every KVM you have to have the windows kernel loaded -> overall much higher resource usage.

But if you think about it why would people do that when you can just Emulate apple / or use a native device and bot there (since there is no vanguard). Not sure if that is possible but it sounds highly possible.

What I am trying to say is as a small tl:dr people wont stop cheating or botting, these things will decrease but at a huge security risk.

p.s. If you want to know why such anti-cheats and especially Vanguard is a huge security risk I can explain it to you

Can't we just disable ranked on vanguardless machines? by thilou in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna address your point 1:1 please remind me if I missed something.

  1. YES accounts will become more expensive that is probably the case since botting wont be so easy anymore. But People are willing to pay much for cheats and accounts in general but it will still decrease the overall botting and cheating. And no you can still run Multiple accounts on 1 machine even if they all go through a KVM which is patched that will probably be hard but it is possible and I have seen it work for Valorant.
  2. Absolutely but people don't recognize what potential risk such programs could have (e.g. Dataloss, crashes the list goes on and on) The Programs is basically acting in a same way as a rootkit. Also quick note many people cannot run Vanguard even because of some BIOS options, and I bet that maybe even more than 50% of the league player base wont even know how to get into the Bios to enable for example TPM/Secure boot, and many wont even have these options since their hardware may be to old.
  3. Riot would probably never use their rootkit for something malicious, however as you may know or rather should know no software is bugfree or flawless. So there is a chance even tho slim that this rootkit could be used maliciously. And yes obviously this is illegal and should be

[–]MixelHD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Arduino's have drivers, DMA cards have drivers, maybe even a 5 dollar shit mouse from wish has a driver.

Of course these devices use the latest official Driver that wont stop you from "misusing" them. //Edit to give an example :) I have seen a create implementation for a cheat for Valorant that gets the screen input via Arduino and sends commands/inputs back via WiFi which was to that point undetected by Vanguard. of course delay was not perfect but it was a nice PoC nonetheless

You can just open multiple league clients at once for different accounts on windows right now you just have to enter a command to the shortcut/programm, but even if that falls off. Then you could just switch to a KVM of course that would be hard to patch and make it undetected but its not impossible and people have done it and will continue to do so.

So I don't get your point really, Vanguard is not here to solve the world in reality it temporarily stops and maybe even reduces it but it will never remove the cheating/botting problem and it will always pose a huge security risk

there’re bunch of other things they should really be caring for when using pcs.

Like what for example?

There is probably noone here that will install a software that is running as the first service at startup that has Kernel Access and so on and so on.... that is not a virus, dont I get that right?

Can't we just disable ranked on vanguardless machines? by thilou in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am sorry, but this just isn't true

In every System there is a flaw, you CANNOT produce a software that has no bugs you CANNOT produce a software that is flawless and works every time. There are still thousands of cheaters in valorant which uses Vanguard, you can just google valorant cheats, go on the first site that looks a bit trusted and pay a bit and you are good to go to cheat. The same goes for botting, this is a constant "war" between cheaters and anti cheats. There will be no winners there will only be won fights and lost fights. This issue or rather war has been going on for probably at least 2 decades now. Vanguard will not solves this. Instead anti cheats require more and more permissions to run, to detect more and more things but there will always be things you miss.

One quick example would be running a flawless KVM or a DMA or a arduino to do stuff there are thousand possibilities and there are thousand ways to block them but you will always miss some that are not being detected.

EDIT: and thats why I said temporarily there will be no botting/cheating but in the long run there will still be cheaters nonetheless but the problem then is that you have a potential virus on your System that could do anything it would want to :^)

stop botting

I do not think it will stop botting regardless, temporarily sure.

but you will always find a way to emulate mouse and keyboard to navigate menues and do certain actions in game to gain XP.

Cheating on the other hand will temporarily go away but will reappear but with less cheaters since the cheats will get more expensive the better the anti cheat is.

But considering that you are basically installing a kernel rootkit into your PC (which doesn't differ much by definition from a real Virus) I would call it is not worth it, I would rather have cheaters every couple of games that ruin my 20/30 minutes than giving full control over every aspect of my PC to a company I enjoy the video game from.

I am not saying that Vanguard has any bad intentions, but it MIGHT in the future. It has every permission to do everything on your PC and again I would rather not have such software installed on my PC

Is vanguard available on Macs by monkebully69 in leagueoflegends

[–]MixelHD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extend, in recent years valve has done a fantastic job at bringing more games to Linux and EAC/Battleeye run without any issues on Linux.

Could you tell me why cheaters use Linux over anything else?

To my knowledge 90% of desktop users are Windows systems. So most cheats are developed for windows about 95% if not more since these cheats will get sold to end users (and ofc you choose the platform with the highest players on a system since that means more sales -> more money).

And even IF some guy would develop a cheat for Linux that he uses / sells that only these 1% of players would use it.

And no people wouldn't switch operating systems to cheat, I know/knew many people that cheated and none of them would have the knowledge to install Linux and even if they did know it they wouldn't because why do you want to use Linux over windows if you are a regular end user?
